Deep Waste by shadow30

made by shadow30 for Ludum Dare 48 (JAM)

Intro & Explanation

You are a marine biologist and your mission is to clear the ocean of trash and record every living beeing found in there.

You have a (ECO) sub marine that functions only if you feed it with material to recycle. To help with that the sub marine is equipt with an GRAB-O-TRON to easily grab trash that floats in the water. If you find all the fish and finsih the last trash list (with nuclear waste) than you win!

HUD

The HUD on the left top side, shows you which trash is needed for the next upgrade to be activated.

The HUD on the left bottom side, shows you the barometer and how much pressure the sub marine can resist. Above that you see the hull status and how much hull damage you can get before the sub marine is broken.

If you unlocked the scanner you can see on the right top side all ocean creatures you already discovered and which you are missing.

Upgrades

Following Upgrades can be unlocked:

  • Barometer Upgrade: You can resist higher pressure and so you can divedeeper and deeper into the ocean
  • Light Upgrade: its really dark down there, so you will need some light around you.
  • Flash Upgrade: As I said, its really, really dark down there, so you maybe want to look ahead what comes next.
  • Scanner: If you want to document which beeing are living down there, you need some device to record the behavour of those creatures.

Controls

  • WASD or arrow keys to move
  • Left Mouse Button to grapple trash (or stun sharks!)
  • Right Mouse Button to active scanner (hold it to scan, it may take a while to fully scan a creature)
  • F to toggle light if you have unlocked it
  • R to restart the game after game over
  • M to toggle music and sound

I had a lot of fun !

The controls were intuitive, the art style is nice and clear, the sounds give nice feedback.
The progression was well balanced, and I loved that the game has an ending.

Good job all around 🐠

I liked the idea. I liked that I can improve the bathyscaphe.
I liked the enemies. The appearance and attack of the shark came as a surprise.

Great job.

I like the art, cool gameplay, perfet HUD and i like the progression througt the Abyss!

May be some improve :
- I prefer to play in a broswer instead of download a game.
- Explication in the game ( I play without read the instruction :( )
- Add beginning menu

@vuvuzela80 Thanks for you feedback! We are currently trying to host the game on a webpage, not so easy with monogames :(. There was sadly no time left to add the instructions in the game, sorry for that, same applies to a beginning menu.

Wow this is extremely well done! It had a really nice sense of progression, the art style and sound design were great, it kept me hooked. A little intro and outro screen would've been nice though!

@stejkrobot sorry to here that. I hope you enjoyed it nevertheless

@wetburritosupreme @bunchanurds Thank you for the kind words! We had an end sequence in mind, but unfortunately we had to cut it

@aofekiko For the last fish you need to look at the bottom of the ocean

Well done! I had a good time playing this, it looks nice and comfy. Some music would be nice, but to be honest the soundscape is good even without it.

The grappling hook mechanic is very satisfying! There's a good amount of trash to collect too, which was fun! Good work!

I completely completed the game, only I could not find the last fish, the game is very clean and atmospheric, going deeper the first time is really scary.
Controls and gameplay are simple and straightforward. Good impressions from the game, it's a pity that there are no sounds. Overall a good job!

@dest-69 Thanks for the kind words :). The last "fish" is only crawling on the bottom of the ocean, but maybe there is also a bug which makes them move ouf of the map, we are still investigating there.

Actually there are sounds. Maybe you need to check your audiosettings on your device? Or do you mean general background music?

@y4nnick i mean music, sounds with underwater effects, sounds fish, eth. but this is all more nitpicking)

Loved it! felt polished and everything fit well together. Sadly couldn't find the last fish (and I did look at the bottom all the way) but that could've just been me, maybe make it glow a little if it's really small? Only improvement would be to add some more water sounds or ambient sound.

Well polished and fun game. The ambient sounds were very appropriate for the mood.

If i could improve one thing, it would be to communicate better what happens with the sharks, because i still don't know what happens when they bite (perhaps that part isn't implemented yet which is totally understandable considering the overall scope of the game)
