Worm Rampage by StarryNiteGames

[raw]
made by StarryNiteGames for Ludum Dare 48 (JAM)

cover_small.jpg

You're a peaceful tunnel burrowing worm just minding your own business. Dive deep so you can breach and sore through the air like a majestic sky whale. Eat all the attack helicopters to win the game! Be careful not to lose yourself in the process.

Missiles will destroy the worm's body segments, but will only stun the worm when they collide with its head. If you lose all your body segments, you die.

Controls

Mouse: Steering

Left Mouse Button: Burrow faster

The controls worked very well, and it was very intuitive to play. I think I only got hit twice while playing. I lost my last tail piece, and I got studded from hitting the head. I wasnt sure what being stun changed, since you couldn't change your trajectory mid-air anyway.

Fun and intuitive. Would be nice if there was a little more around the edges, like some feedback about winning. The core mechanics are solid though.

Really cute little game! I liked the gradually growing satisfaction when I jump out of the water and go "Thats it, thats the one" before I destroy the helicopters :P. I do feel the game would work alot better with a bit more air control! Overall really awesome entry!

This game was pretty fun for such simple concept. I really enjoyed the high speed jumping and flying around. I really felt like a superman haha! The controls are super-smooth and responsive.

Some things to improve: Add some "winning screen", I didn't know what happened when I killed everyone. But other than that, pretty cool! Some music (probably chiptune) in the background would totally change the experience.

PS: You got an extra star for that f-ing amazing retro cartridge art!

It reminds me of a game called "Indestructible Tank" that I used to play and love. I very much like this style of gameplay and it's fun to play. Also, cudos for the cover Image :D

This was awesome! I really liked the core idea, would be cool to see it built out a little bit more. There was a great moment where I kept jumping just short of the helicopter and I realized: I have to go deeper! If you just added a little bit of structure (goals, win screen, maybe points or something?) I think it would go a long way. Awesome!

This game feels great to play! One complaint and that most helicopters are too high to reach :( but great work making this with only one team member!

The key art bought me. The game itself is a really simple idea but well executed. It suffers a bit from the lack of music and sound effects, but i had fun nontheless.

@jasontherand Later on I am considering adding a system where the player is in some way penalized for not colliding with terrain head-on. I hope this will make the stun status more dangerous to acquire.

@congusbongus You must dive *deeper and deeper* before breaching to reach the high ones.

@aiursrage2k, and everyone else asking about victory screen. I wish I had added one too! I regrettably ran out of time and energy. All the logic is already there under the hood for win/lose states, but I never connected a HUD element to it.

Thanks everyone for your comments so far.

This was fun! It took me a moment to figure out what was going on (I just bounded around uselessly on the surface for a bit) but once I did I got great joy from yeeting my worm merrily at the helicopters!

The game would've benefited from a victory screen, perhaps restarting with more helicopters each time, but the foundations of it feel nice. I love the box art cover too!

I really liked the game and I loved the basic system of bursting out and hitting the helicopter. I do wish you would have made the action more juicy, something like screen shake. I also think it would've been neat if instead of getting faster by clicking you get faster by just moving in the ground for long enough. Still a very good game though.

Kinda fun but I couldn't see the helicopters when I was underground, so it was impossible to aim. I destroyed them all and then the game just kept going?

You got a solid grip on the base gameplay, and as much as I tried, couldn't get it to glitch out with surface-only digging like old flash games on this formula used to do so good job.

Fun core gameplay! It feels satisfying to land the jumps properly and moving feels good.

Some more sound effects (like when hitting helicopters) would do a lot to improve the mood and feedback, and it might be cool if the helicopters moved around. Likewise, digging trails in the places you've been would be cool as well.

Simple gameplay but really fun. I enjoyed the fluidness of the movement. I would've liked to see some movements from the helicoptors or maybe even some objectives while we were in the dirt in order to vary the gameplay.
