Slumber by KepperSnapper

[raw]
made by KepperSnapper for Ludum Dare 48 (JAM)

Theme: Deeper and Deeper

Decided to challenge myself and go solo for this jam!

For my entry for the jam, I went ahead with the concept of Deep Sleep, and making others fall deeper and deeper into a slumber as I felt it would be unique!

Intro:

Slumber is a quaint but frustratingly challenging little game about a Dungeon Mob trying to keep a bunch of her babies in their deep sleep. Feed milk to the babies and send them deeper and deeper into a slumber, by standing on the hanging cage to milk the Cow of Dreams.

BUT be GENTLE! Jumping around on it too much causes the cage to FLAIL wildly, and make alot of noise! And the babies don't like that! :(. Can you make it through the night?

thumb.png

How to Play:

1: Step on the cage in the middle to milk the cow and squirt milk on the babies below!

2: Control the movement of the Cage with the Orange and Blue buttons!

3: Watch the speed of the Cage! If it collides with things it makes a lot of noise and can possibly wake up the babies!

4: Use the trampolines to get to higher places

5: You can use the doors on the left and the right to get around the map quicker

SlumberGif2.gifgiphy.gif

Basic Controls:

1:WASD to move

2:SpaceBar to jump

3:Press Spacebar while next to a wall to wall jump

4:Press S on a thin platform to drop through it

Overall this game was a blast to make, from designing the concept and gameplay experience to coding the game itself and working on the art, animation, and lighting to truly bring out the mood that I envisioned. Although I did have to rely on some base environment assets from the Unity Asset Store and some free tunes from freesounds.org, everything else in the game was done by myself.

I do wish I had more time to polish the clarity of the game and possibly clean up some bugs here and there. However for the sake of the jam, I had to cut it short. I worked really hard on making this game look good! I hope you guys like it!

Changelog

Rules: No adding features -

Small Bug fixes and edits are simply to ensure a holistic and enjoyable player experience, and all is fair as long as a changelog is documented.

1: Controls clunky - Many people have commented that the controls were not reactive and made the game unenjoyable! This was due to the Unity Physics not being accurate in the build vs the editor! Prior to this you couldnt even walk up a slope! I made some slight tweaks, hopefully its better now

While the game was a bit laggy on my PC, I really liked the game's design, both aesthetically and mechanically. If it were a bit more technically polished, I'd have a lot of fun playing it.

I also had some lags, but then it becomes comfy for me, so I could enjoy the game.
It has really pretty aesthetics, but flow sometimes a bit slow, but most of all is fine! Thank you for your work!

Very nice art and character concept. You accomplshed to pack a a simple "shiny" game. Good job!

Quite good graphics this game's got. I think you guys' given quite a lot of efforts to make it visually stunning.

Not sure if it's intentional but the control is kinda clunky and irresponsive and the game lacks several auditory cues. Like it took me a while to figure out that the white circles are signalling the babies aren't being fed enough. Felt like adding a baby cry sound would suffice the job.

But yeah, apart from the clunky controls and lacks of meaningful cues, this game is quite alright.

Thanks guys! There seems to be some issues with the lagginess which is strange, looking to patch it up soon!

I love it. I really like your take on the theme and the overall game concept. It took me some time to get used to the controls, but then the game became really enjoable. I gotta say that I did not appreciate the character air controls. I understand that it was part of the character concept, but I think that giving the player more control over movement the game would have a more responsive feeling and it would engage more. Don't take it as a criticism (more like feedback), I like the game, I just think that with more control of the movements it would be more engaging.

The graphics are incredible and the idea of the gameplay is really nice ! The controls are really hard to handle and the physic of the cage really doesn't help. Some kind of rail on the top of the chains would have helped to anticipate where the cage will be when you stop the button and it stops swinging so much haha

Overall, good job !

Hello everyone! Thanks for giving such nice and constructive feedback. As much as I didn't want to make any edits due to fairness, I felt that too many people were not having a good experience due to the controls not being tight, hence I did a little bit of tweaking to make the control and movespeed more responsive, in order to ensure that others don't have a tough time, and lose out on the player experience I wanted to drive. It was really mostly an issue with Unity Physics, it works fine in the editor but turns out clunkier in the build. :/. Anyway, thank you all! :)

The artwork is really great. The sound and music are also really good. Not sure if its just my laptop but the game runs a little slow for me. I'll have to check it out on my desktop when I get a chance.

Visually looks amazing, sounds design is great.
There are menu issues, once paused and in the options menu if you press ESC the "option" overlay doesn't get removed but the game continues.
Also, the volume control doesn't adjust all the audio effects, its not a "master volume" as there are some SFX still playing even though the volume is turned to zero.
It would also be nice if Mob can grab the ladders a little easier, at the moment if you're slightly away from the ladder you fall even though Mob is passing through it.
Interesting concept and once the controls and settings are adjusted it'll be very fun!

Great game!

Neat concept, very well exectuted, I love the art style. However, there are a few issues I have with the game, namely:
- the trigger areas for the ladders are too narrow, I keep missing them while jumping around
- the only available build being a web one and no graphics settings means people with lower-end machines(like mine) are gonna have a worse experience, as the effects drop the framerate substantially
- the D key having a function while the locomotion scheme is WASD seems kind of like an oversight

Good job overall.

As others already said, it's really hard to control the character and I had real troubles getting on a ladder. I think it's not possible to get on the ladder while you are in air, which I would expect from a "platformer". Or maybe I just timed it wrong...
Otherwise I think this is an exceptional entry, with really nice graphics and concept. I can easily imagine this being released as a commercial game once the controls are more polished.

@tengusheath Thanks for trying out the game! Yea many ppl have commented that the game runs laggy, guess its just because I used a bunch of particles and post processing :/ I didnt know because I was testing it alone

@arbe Thanks for such constructive feedback! regarding the lag, a lot of people have mentioned about it but I have no idea how to fix it, because the build version was the first one I uploaded and people also commented about the lag *shrugs*. :(

Also thanks for your feedback on the ladders as well, many people have talked about the controls, I only wish I spent more time gathering feedback from playtests prior to submission, turns out I got really used to the game while developing it and never saw these things as a problem, which was my mistake!

Overall, thanks for trying it out and for your constructive words :)

@ondy1985 Thanks for trying the game! :) Yea you definitely can climb the ladder while in the air, I think I just got so used to it as I didnt have anybody to playtest for me, definitely will cater some time for playtesting in future jams, once again thhank you so much! :D

@geo3d Ah thanks for highlighting the menu issues! If I ever continnue polishing this game post jam I'll be bound to fix it! Yeap, similar to others, some people have mentioned that 'laddering' was too hard, I only wish I spent sometime to get others to playtest it before submission! Once again thanks for your kind and constructive feedback :)

I liked it, the concept and execution were unique and the milk management was complicated without being ridiculous to handle. The only gripe I had with it was that the ladder hitbox seemed a bit too narrow to be able to climb effectively.

Above all, this game is really pretty and the SFX/music pair really well with the visuals. Very strong aesthetic. Well done!

@simonbw Hi there! Im deeply sorry that the game did not run for you! @kapa6uh Thank you so much for trying out the game! Appreciate the kind words! I was trying to go for an idea of putting the babies into a deeper and deeper sleep, like sending them to bed... but I guess it kind of is a little bit of a stretch haha XD could most definitely have tweaked the idea to fit the deeper and deeper theme more

@hcs-hades Thank you so much for trying out the game! :) I think generally, the feedback for controls got better after I fixed the physics discrepancies between the build and the editor! But most people have gripes about the handling of the character which is something I cant fix due to fairness :P but once again thank you for the kind words

Nice game, the idea is very original.

Lighting effects are very pretty, the character animation is simple but works well.
The result is very polished, and it's very impressive to do that as solo developper.

Maybe the left and right moves are bit too slow, and the cage is balancing too fast sometimes.

Amazing job
