MEGADRILL by Corny

[raw]
made by Corny for Ludum Dare 48 (COMPO)

Dig out as much gold as you can!

Down we gooo

You control the MEGADRILL in a quest to dig out as much gold as possible!

Remember to watch out for your supplies - you need fuel to go deeper and metal to craft bombs. Why bombs? Well, in the off-case your drill runs out of fuel you're gonna need to replenish it by hand, and what better way to dig for fuel?

aghf.png

You get 5 free bombs whenever you enter a new mining area. After you've expended those, each new bomb will cost 2 metal, so keep that in mind while throwing them around!

While digging watch out for falling rocks and irradiated blocks - they can kill you!

When you have enough ores, just throw them into the Recycler and take a seat in the pilot seat - it's time to go!

CONTROLS:

In Drill Mode: - Left, Right - Turn the Drill - Up - Slow down - Down - Speed up - E - Brake and go to Miner mode

In Miner Mode: - Left, Right - Run - Space - Jump - S - Throw bombs and ores, detonate bombs - E - Pick up ores, interact - Q - Swap selected inventory slot - ESC - End your run - use only if you're stuck in a cave with no way to get out!

NOTES:

Boy did I not make it in time. Sometime later I'll try to whip up an HTML5 port and fix the couple bugs that slipped through. The on-time version will always be available to download!

Check itch.io devlog to see what's been fixed in the post-compo version!

@windzyboy @5you @fixxel So sorry, I didn't even check if everything worked then fell asleep (you might recall the "it's 4 am, i'll write later" description), everything's in place now - or at least should be!

The concept seems interesting, and the art is nice, but even after reading the tutorial I spent a lot of time trying to figure out what to do.

- The red bomb (?) item seems to go down in quantity when I throw it, but even after it reaches 0, I can still throw bombs in most areas. However, this seems to stop working randomly.
- I always have 5 bombs inside the drill, but they get reset to 0 when I walk out.
- Metal doesn't give you any bombs when you recycle it. I see that the gray bar goes up when I do this, but I don't know what the purpose of that bar is supposed to be.

@anuke

Ah yeah I should've written that down in the description

The number next to the bombs is the amount of FREE bombs - you get 5 of those those whenever you enter a new mining area. Extra bombs cost 2 metal each. You can't have more than 100 metal, thus the bar.

As for the 5 bombs inside the drill - noted, I'll make it less confusing

Took me a bit to figure out what I was doing, but I had fun with it once I did. Switching between driving the drill and getting out to mine is really cool!

That's some complex gameplay for game made in two days! Congratulations! Really liked it! Drill mode itself would be a nice time killer! Graphics are great!

This game was great! I liked the ability to get out and explore your environment on a "deeper" level ;P well thought out and exceptionally polished, I had a hard time adjusting to the controls but other than that I had a blast!

It took me a bit to get a hang of the controls but the game was a blast, loved the little miner mode! The graphics were great and the sounds were a great addition! Nice work!

Interesting game, but the miner part put me into real trouble as there is no clear indication of the different keys, what they do and what the top-right diagram means. It would have really helped to have a tutorial. Apart from that, it's a very nice entry!

The mechanics are super deep (heh) and there is a lot of variety in the game loop. The graphics are amazing and there is A LOT to this game, I'm amazed with what you managed to accomplish in a compo entry! Please keep working on it. Great job!

The learning curve is pretty steep, a tutorial would certainly help. But the graphics and the concept are excellent. I really like the mix of drill and miner mode. I think this game has a lot of post-jam potential. Great work!
