Mine Zhero by Colisan
Instructions
read those! =D
You are a relentless miner, your goal is to break many valuable ores, and keep going deeper and deeper into the mine. Don't forget to go back to the elevator in time!
Controls
- WASD or ZQSD or Arrows to move
- Space or K to jump
- L to break blocks
- M to take/place blocks
You can break or grab the blocks above and under you by moving in those directions.
Scoring
- Small gold ore = 1pt
- Big gold ore = 5pts
- Going one level deeper = 10pts for each level deep!
- Consecutively breaking red ore start at 1pt and combo up. Hitting any other block breaks the combo. Same goes for the blue ore. Blue ore and red ore aren't compatible, they will break each other combo!

Tips
Blocks you place on the elevator goes to the next level with you, you can use this to hoard blocs then score huge red or blue combos.

Don't mine too fast, there may be some leftover TNTs down there!

The deeper you go, the more vengeful ghosts of previous miners will come back to haunt you, be careful!
With enough skill, you can jump then quickly grab the block beneath yourself and place it higher to fly... kinda #itsNotABugItsAFeature
Post-feedbacks tip
The game was made so that you had the ability to choose how you wanted to play, greedily or not. In fact, it appears the game design is more balanced with a "riskly hoarding ores on the elevator and cashout big combos later" mindset. You'll enjoy it more if you play that way =) Good luck and have fun, remember, dying frequently is expected, it's how you get better!
Infos
Game made entirely in 48h for the compo. Tools used : Clickteam Fusion and its broken HTML5 exporter, Aseprite, Beepbox, ChipTone, Audacity, a bit of PHP/SQL for the online part, and a lot of love <3
Thanks for playing!
TL;DR:
- Controls are WASD+K+L+M
- Break or grab blocs by moving into their direction
- Blue ore score combo when you break many. Any other bloc broken interrupt the combo
- Same goes for red ore, but gold ore don't combo
- Blocs you place on the elevator stay with you to the next level (for you to make big combos later)
- If the elevator leaves without you, you're stuck, no escape but death

you did so many things right with this game. It's really easy to understand the objective. You created several pressure factors, ghost, explosives and the time you have to keep track of in your mind.
The online leaderboard makes it even more addictive.
The only improvement wish I have is the controls. On PC I think a moues would've added cool quick gameplay. Otherwise I think it's probably much better with a controller.
It's a really cool game.
> On PC I think a mouse would’ve added cool quick gameplay
Daaamn, I wish I thought of that, it's a good idea...
In addition to the timer, the ghosts and explosives make the gameplay quite fast paced and reactive. The leaderboard made me spend far too much time trying to get big combos.
I think with a bit more "depth" to it this would actually be worth releasing on steam or something! Considering you made all this in 2 days...
Congratulations on your entry! I swear if you don't get top 100 with this I'll eat my keyboard :)
Because I died quick my first few times.
Got the strat down though, so picked up my scoring.
Mechanics are great, game is fun, audio isn't overpowering. Great work
Overall I want to point out that the game is really theme-related and looks very consistent and cool. It is just crazy all this has been made by one person within 48 hours! Great job, @colisan! :)

The added pressure of the elevator leaving without you makes it a lot more interesting, too.
Only minor gripe is the choice of controls (L and M for mining and grabbing blocks). I agree that maybe a mouse would be more intuitive.
Great game overall!
Jokes aside, thanks all for your amazing feedbacks. I'm really learning a lot from them! I'm adding three rules to my usual gamejam to-do set : "In less than 10 minutes, Ludum Dare players should have understood what the game has in its belly", "Really take some time to find controls that feel naturals to most players, including mouse and controllers" and "Each game rule should be explained indepentently from each other, by the game/level design at some point".
Gonna use them wisely in my future jam games <3
Thank you so much for bringing this by my stream. Here's a link to the VOD:

Tu as de quoi faire.
Bonne continuation ! Et bravo pour ton jeu de compo !
Nice work!
I love the simplicity of this, very easy to understand and it has a great arcade game/quarter muncher style vibe to it which I really dig.
The movement as it currently is feels very functional but with some post-jam clean up and reworking would feel better.
I almost feel like if the timer was a permanent fixture at the top, and the tunnel went on for a good while, players could incentivized to try and dig really far whilst also having enough time to make a mad dash backwards. You could even have a roguelikey/litey type thing where ever few floors you have a shop to buy items/speed up or pick axe/weapons maybe? Just spitballing so don't consider these things as objective criticism, more just speaking out loud haha.
Perhaps a combo counter could be included too, if you chain mining jewels fast enough you'd get some sort of bonus. Again, thinking out loud.
Random feature-creep musing aside, really solid entry and great job!
I had a lot of fun pushing my luck and never actually scoring any points  but just now I played again for another half an hour or so and managed to get a big payout; ~6 +15s! those top scores are something else though...
I'm glad I tried this again offstream when I'm more focused; the gameplay is super interesting, in an emergent sort of way. And after playing again, I'm agreeing again with what you said on stream: your game reminds me of some of my games :) Really fun to play!

I think that the timings of things are really well done! The bombs and the ghosts give just enough time to get out of the way if you're ready and when something goes wrong it can really compound and lead to a scramble (or quick demise). EDIT: I don't mean the awkward keyboard mapping - I assume that's due to a French layout? I mean, for example, when trying to place a block and quickly turn around it very frequently places the block after turning instead of before. Maybe I'm just bad at my timing but it feels like a problem with polling the input.
I like the mechanic of having the elevator leave without you. It feels so sad to just be stranded on the level knowing all you can do is get a few more measly points before checking out.
One thing I've run into a few times is clearing a level of points and then just having nothing to do for sometimes as much as 30s. This is usually due to a large amount of bombs on a single level and an unusually long timer. I think it would be ideal if levels could go in one direction infinitely and maybe even increase in gem density the further from the elevator you get.
Of course the "stay on the elevator" strategy needs fixing (maybe you don't get points for the level itself but rather it adds to combos or something?) but it sounds like you're aware of it. I'm going to beat @madbarron and I'm going to do it properly :D
Overall REALLY awesome game! I've never had a jam game I keep coming back to so that's a really good sign! The leaderboard is a part of that but I think it did more to get me hooked than it does to keep my playing.
Merci bien!!
ps: Au début j'avais du mal avec les inputs, il faut un certain temps pour s'y habituer ;)
I allow myself to make a small comment in French suddenly;) The game is really fun, the graphics and the sound are really nice. I had a lot of fun ^^ even if I'm a bit disgusted that I didn't manage to get into the leaderboard x) I must be really bad. Great game overall, well done!
ps: At first I had trouble with the inputs, it takes some getting used to;)
