Last Breath by Yorsh

[raw]
made by Yorsh for Ludum Dare 48 (COMPO)

Warning : Can be (a bit) disturbing.

You are being pulled into the deep by some creepy shadow hands. Try to stay alive. Find oxygen, avoid sharks and walls.

The game is based more on atmosphere than gameplay, but I hope it's good enough !

Tips : * Sharks attack when you are in front of them. At this point it's too late to do something, so try to get around. * End happens a little bit before 150 meters. It's fairly hard to get there tho.

Controls : * Left/Right arrows to move side ways. * Space + L/R arrow to move faster, but uses oxygen. * Space (alone) to speed up your descent.Drowning.gif

Man this is super atmospheric, great job!

Afraid there is a bug on firefox, Linux where there's giant purple triangle in the middle of screen.

Wow, very creative. Looks very polished (except for the triangle bug..). Nice theme/mood.

There's a bug though in Firefox, linux. There's a pink triangle in the middle of the screen. The game is still playable though luckily :)

People's first game I try, and boom, great game!
I especially love the setting, the hands ... the theme is great for him.
At first it was frustrating because I didn't see the shark attack, it happens too fast.

@hilkojj @snesgaard Uhhh that's a weird one, I'll see if I can provide a version that works well on firefox and/or linux for future testers. Thanks for the feedbacks !

really cool idea! i'm terrible at it since the controls are floaty, but the floaty controls contribute to the mood. good job! the audio is very cool too!

Awesome visuals and atmosphere. Very original idea, this is by far best game I played. I like that it's a little bit creepy

Great mood, really dark and creepy and oppressive. The way the arms pull you down is really cool. I just can't make it that far because the sharks always see me and eat me.

Great atmosphere. The player holding the oxygen tank is a nice touch. I'd make the shark range a bit shorter though, I seemed to end up in a lot of damned if you do situations where they were camping oxygen tanks. The hands look creepy but the sharks quickly become the real scary thing.

I can't help but wonder what the person in the inner tube is thinking! "Where'd he go?!"

Mood is fantastic!
The hands are great, the depth given by the sharks in the background is nice.
The animations work very well and the art is on point.

Awesome job!

I experienced a small bug: if you stay in the game over screen for long enough, the ending will play behind it.

@tinykidtoo @stewmega Thanks for the feedbacks !
Yeah the sharks are really hard, with more time I would have liked to improve the positioning of the sharks and the way they trigger the attack (it's kind of tricky to get it right because of the perspective).

Man, this game isn't going to help me with my thalassophobia lol. The dark atmosphere is very well done, it's creepy but fascinating, loved it! The art is incredibly neat, especially for a compo! Love the low poly art style coupled with nice noise effects to set the mood. It took me a couple of tries before understanding that you have to avoid getting in front of sharks since they're in the background, I thought they randomly attacked you and you had to avoid them using your boost.
Overall, everything is really well executed, graphics look amazing, the gameplay is challenging but fun, and it's an excellent take on the theme, congrats!

@dodidouda Oh yes that was probably not the best game for you to play^^. Glad you liked it anyway! I'll add a small tip on the LD and itch pages to explain a bit how sharks work, I can totally see it taking a few tries to understand otherwise.

Wow, this was incredible. The first time a shark came out of the background and nabbed me, I cried a little. The hands and just atmosphere in general are perfect. Well done!! :)

Really nice idea and the atmosphere, the sharks are frustrating, but seems like you knew it already from the comments above. Very good compo game!

This game is very stylish, somewhat disturbing, and quite fun. It's also really challenging and I'm terrible at it  The graphics and audio combine to create a very moody atmosphere. It's weird and beautiful being dragged into the abyss. My only suggestion would be to allow restarting more easily.

Great work on it!

Mood and graphics is great. The flooty controls suits the game. But i struggled with the sharks.

I have to agree with the other players. The sharks made it a bit too difficult. Otherwise it was a really nice moody game. Well done!

@jryzkns It's simply eggs breaking, but it sounds much more dreadfull when played over a shark bite^^
Glad you liked the game!

Please, pretty please, let the player retry by mashing space instead of forcing them to grab their mouse just to click a button.
I also had an issue at some point with a shark that just appeared out of nowhere (it wasn't in the background before jumping towards me).
Apart from that, graphics, audio and gamefeel are quite good. You definitely knew the ambiance you were going for and achieved it. A nice simple game well executed. Kudos.

@paulloz I should definitely have done that, will think about it for next time!
I believe the shark was hidden but a rock, It doesn't happen too much but I couldn't get 100% rid of it in time. Thanks for the feedbacks :)

Very creepy idea. Very nice audio and visuals and presentation. The game is kind of slow, and not very much fun, but everything else makes up for it! Good job!

The desperate attempts to flee finished by slow dissolving of blood from the silhouette... it really tapped into my fear of drowning, wonderful work!

This works well as a slow-death, and got me curious to see how the mood changes if the hands grabbed you and pulled you in really really fast! Might be scary in a different way, changing only the speed :)

Very unique game, so innovated. Good atmosphere, sounds are great, also graphics. I just missed a visual/audio notice for the shakrk, actually theres a audio notice, but its to short, maybe to incresae a lit bit that. Good game, congrats for the work!

@felo07 Actually you have to swin around the sharks that are in the backgrounds. Once they charge it's over. It's kind of confusing tho, with a little more time I would have liked to either add some effects to make it more clear, or better allow to dodge by going far enough quick enough.
Thanks for your inputs !

Super creepy game, wow! Great job with the mood! I made sure the first time I got eaten by a shark was the last time, cuz that was intense! The ending was great, was there dialogue there? The sound was a bit low for me.

Really great job, I love creepy games like this!

@fueelin Yeah the girl says "Ahhh, finally you're here to play with me...".
The sound is indeed too low, I never know how to know how loud something will be :s

Glad you liked it tho !

Good job on the theme! It's also really good at setting up a creepy mood. It is unfortunately on the difficult side. I did find it a bit of a nuisance that some of the bottles were touching the wall. I actually appreciate that the audio wasn't horribly loud. I have my volume set to 2 throughout the jam because of all the loud games. :/

Anyways, it's a very polished jam game. Nice job!

Oh my, this is indeed creepy.
For some reason, it kinda reminds me of that one creepy boss in Ocarina of Time (but underwater).
Good job!

Loved it, one of my faves from the compo, it was tough but I got better and better! Sadly the ending was spoiled by a bug for me, where a bad run still made it to the bottom!
