Deep Blue by Imphenzia

[raw]
made by Imphenzia for Ludum Dare 48 (COMPO)

HOW TO PLAY:

  • HIT [SPACE] TO DIVE / SWIM
  • TIME YOUR STROKES AS HANDS PASS THE HEAD TO INCREASE SPEED WITH PERFECT STROKES

ABOUT DEEP BLUE:

The April Ludum Dares are always tricky for me as it is my wife's birthday the LD weekend every year. But, I managed to squeeze in 15 hours this weekend while my family was sleeping :) I don't expect a high score for innovation ;)

If you liked my track "Discovery of Planet X" you may enjoy the soundtrack of Deep Blue. I composed this track during the compo, but the melody for underwater scene that came to mind was very (very) similar to Discovery of Planet X that I composed 10 years ago.

Sadly, Itch.io can't find your game. The links appear broken.

@5you thanks for the heads up - as usual I forgot to set it to public :) should work now.

Great visuals, as always. I am not sure how the target depth is set though. Is it increased after each successful dive? I wanted to go deeper (and deeper), but the diver always grabbed the bouy and wanted to return. What a coward :-)

I wonder how you can create a game like this in 15 hours, but then again, based on your YT videos, you probably created all the models in like 30 minutes and had the rest for coding :-)

Nice work!

I like the models in this game, I know you said you had only a little time to work on it but they look nice. BGM is nice as well. Lack if time shows in the gameplay though. Overall, I'd be proud if I made this in 15 hours, so good job!

@ondy1985 thanks, yes - the modeling and animation was about 2 hours I think - some challenges to do the necessary finflipping movements to get them decent =) Yes, every time you reach a depth it will add 1 meter PLUS additional meters if you had a lot of air to spare as you surfaced, so it could increase by 1-10 meters each time. Most of the development time is putting it together in Unity as you suspected.

@oxrock Yes - the gameplay is basic "on-button" mechanic, haha =) It just may appeal to people who can't stop just can't stop if there is a new goal to reach... "I wonder how deep I can go".

It is quite tricky to get the "flow" going and keep up the perfect pace, and few times I almost held my breath along with the diver :D Great job. Feels really polished and overall well handled. Great entry! Now I need to know how deep it actually can go..

It really is a beautiful game for such a short dev time ! I found it a bit hard to understand which exact part of the stroke I was supposed to press space on, it felt like it was easier on the way down than on the way up as well.

In any case, the sounds and graphics are really top notch ! Great job!

Thank you very much for your entry - I hope you had great fun making it

Simple concept and the art style .... well we kind of knew  This reflects really well on you and for the short time frame... amazing.

I hope you'll drop by mine and give it a spin

High quality graphic as usual! relaxing game. For this game jam my situation is similar to you, I have only one day to do it, and rushed at night when my family went to sleep xp. Also thanks your blender tutorial !

Beautiful game, found the controls a little finicky but I think that may just be an easy-to-play-hard-to-master kind of thing. Great job!

Uskomaton suoritus 15 tunnissa. Näyttää todella viimeistellyltä, ja oli myös hauska peli jonka idean tajuaa heti.

Beautiful graphics, animation and awesome music. I really like it :)

This is my first game jam ever and I must admit to you @imphenzia were a big inspiration for me to finally take part in such event. I recently watched lots of your videos (mostly 10-minute modelling challanges and videos about previous LD editions). Thank you for that, because it was a super adventure for me!

I would be more than happy if you could check out my game and leave a comment. Cheers!

Great visuals,amazing music...
Really cool idea for a game, fits the theme perfect.

I have trouble timing the strokes, therefore i keep running out of oxygen quick.
Would have been nice to get some 'pointers' when to stroke on your first dive.

Amazing entry !

@jin9310 - Thanks, I was considering a golf-swing type of indicator to help out with precision but... ran out of time to implement that :)

@fdk - Thanks - I don't know why the upswim is trickier, I tried to figure that out before submitting haha.

@purpledartfrog) - Cheers, I had a great (limited) time making it :) Hope you enjoyed participating too and I stopped by to play and rate your game - nice work on that one!

@larsdu - first time I reversed it - cheers :)

@arthur-mairs - Glad you like it and also happy to hear that my content managed to help you out :) I checked it out to test and rate, well done!

@lungtakumi - Thank you - yes, it's funny how no matter how pressured we are with all of life's committments the creativity of making a game and Ludum Dare finds is way into our priorities - it's just too much fun :) You're welcome, played and rated your game - great job!

Will continue to read and respond at next opportunity!

I love the art style, animations and the idea of a 1 button mechanic but I must admit it was so hard to time it properly. I feel like the mechanic is backbone of this game and it did not deliver what I expected but don't get me wrong, it is a great polished submission for a compo!

As many pointed out, the music is great and fitting the overall style of the game! The graphics are as usual perfect for gamejams!

Was there a problem with the animations or something else? I found it quite difficult to time the strokes. I got to 10m deep. If the start of the game was a little easier, then I think I would've enjoyed it a little more. That's not to say I didn't enjoy it though.

A fine compo entry in my opinion. It fits the theme, the music and graphics are it's strongest points. 15 hours is not a lot of time, so considering that, this is really good!

This is an awesome game, one of the best visually for 3d anyway. I found it a little tough to time my strokes but it was really well executed with a good challenge. Nice..
