LD Double Feature: D'pur & Deepir by John Chapman

[raw]
made by John Chapman for Ludum Dare 48 (JAM)

Two games in one! Guide these two brothers D'pur & Deepir, shovels in hand, into the deep unknown. They automatically take turns moving, so all you have to do is point them in the right direction (far away from rocks and trees).

Controls: Use WSAD to change the direction of the active brother.

Programming & Art: John Chapman

Music & Sound: Lucas Ciarlante

D-Pur? Is he related to the Luminoth? :joy: (Please someone get the reference)

Either way, I'd love to give it a shot but Windows seems to be throwing a fit when trying to run this... It say Windows doesn't have the necessary authorisations

@vectrex28 Unfortunately,I don't get the reference. Sorry! But if you could send me a screenshot of what comes up when to try to run it, that would be a huge help.

Juggling both characters was quite fun! You *can* leave back a character by doing back and forths but it doesn't look like it's a good strategy considering you'll eventually be killed off by a screen-wide wall anyway haha. It would be cool to see a version of this that lets you go forever but keeps speeding up. Good job!

@theblondebass Thanks so much! I was attmepting to make it so the walled off situation didn't happen, but I guess something is going wrong with my tile generation code. I appreciate the feedback.

The game is so nice! the gameplay is fun, the pixel art is simple but vivid, and the music is great. Small but exquisite. 5/5!

Cool concept! I really like the core idea - reminds me of the Nintendo DS days. I found the tiny lag between when control switches players and when they actually dig to be very disorienting, since sound is not a dependable indicator of when you can control. However, that being said, I really liked it! Looks great and the music is insanely catchy.

Very fun and original concept! Gets tricky on higher speeds!

Reached 1,000ft, almost could not control the characters anymore :D

Cool idea for a game. The multitasking keeps things interesting throughout. I like how it keeps getting faster as you go along. I think I got decently far, too.

Really interesting concept. I mostly enjoyed how the game progressivly speeds up. This, mixed with controling two characters, that are going in different direction, just ends in chaos and messing up. Very challenging. I also really like the art style, as well as the music.

It was a very fun game, when things went wrong it was because of myself. It got pretty fast in the end and died at 1120 ft as max.
Very great job for a Jam Game and The art is minimalistic and very well done.

@bidentworks @ellenbjohnson @retro-banana-man-nl @monkosum @cdunham Thank you all so much for taking the time to check this out. Looks like Cdunham and Retro got about as far as I ever got. Maybe someone can get to 2000 with some good luck?

Really nice game! I liked the game-boy style graphics, and obviously your take on the theme :) The gameplay was also interesting, constantly switching between sides. I found the transition a bit jarring, however - maybe a smooth transition of control, with a better indicator of who was the active player would've helped? Other than that, great entry! Here's my highscore:

Thanks for checking it out @frogman! I appreciate the kind words. I totally agree with you and would definitely do more to get that transition clearer if I put more time into it.

Cool concept to control 2 players in one controller, but somehow I still prefer ASDW and the arrow keys to control each player, it will be way more easier. I love the art and the music, have to give you straight 5 stars on that. Great job!

Fun, simple game. I found the sprite animations frustrantigly slow, I don't know how deliberate that was to make the game harder but it made it feel like things weren't responsive as the game speeds up. Love the concept and the cute sprites. The soundtrack and sound effects work well too. Fantastic job for you first jam, well done!

Amazing graphics. Love the color palette selection. The gameplay is rather simple but fun! I dont think I had any issues worth mentioning. Maybe it could be a biz faster, but only for the sake of Ludum Dare ratings effectivity.

Very original idea, it's surprising hard
Graphics are awesome, animations are very nice.

Maybe add a "fast" mode for pro players :muscle:
The background is music fit well.

Great work !

1180ft - At the end on the right screen the trees spawned to completely block the path.
Really fun game! I thought it was going to be easy but towards the end it got surprisingly extremely challenging. The animations were really well made.
