Snappy Word: Jellyfish Horizon by deox

[raw]
made by deox for Ludum Dare 48 (COMPO)

Dive as deep as you can in this single-button-controlled nightmare! On your way to the ocean's unexplored depths you might find helpful items such as air bubbles, scuba tanks, and even swimfins. But beware of the jellyfish who might not be keen on letting you float freely into their domain.

Controls: * Space to dive * Enter to restart

Power-ups: * Bubbles will restore your air supply * Scuba tanks will let you breathe for longer * Swimfins will let you hold space to dive continuously, and also double as armor in that they can take hits for you (but will be consumed in the process). They are also stackable! Try it!

I have now a head ache. Timing the dive is a bit tough. And sometimes the spots weren't spawning on the same place.

Nice but difficult little game. Sometimes the air bubbles in the beginning would not show up, which made drowning seemingly inevitable? I liked the calming music! Seems like the Godot (?) web player has a problem with Safari. But I got it to work in Chrome.

Things I liked:
- ambient music
- frustratingly difficult at times but fair (the right mix)
- fun physics mechanic to try and master; almost an upside down flappy bird at times

Improvements:
- It took me a few refreshes to restart each game until I found the enter key restarts the game. "Press Enter to Try again" would be good to add to the death text
- Some diving/water sounds would be a nice addition
- It feels like the cost of skipping a pick-up almost always results in death; perhaps increase the pick-up frequency by about 20% so that skipping a few doesn't guarantee a short run
- a scoreboard of history of dive times and depths would be nice

Bugs:
- didn't see any

The visuals are good and the light rays shining through the water was a nice touch! I like that you can also take different paths depending on how deep you decide to go and it makes the game more re-playable.

I would like more air bubbles at the start of the game though so that I could get farther without multiple tries.

Overall good job getting this made. :)
