Deeper Into Technical Problems by thesambassador

made by thesambassador for Ludum Dare 48 (COMPO)

Welcome to a game where I spent 99% of the time dealing with weird Unity Tilemap edge cases and other random slowdowns. EDIT: Y'all were right, it's better than I thought. When the last 4 hours of jam time is dealing with annoying technical problems, it can get you kinda down on the game itself! I'm fairly satisfied with it now, sorry to have the description be so negative! gifanimation001.gif

You gotta go down. Arrows/Joystick to move, Space/A to shoot/slow your fall.

Shoot ore tiles to get more ammo, shoot explosives to clear more stuff.

Get as deep as you can.

Positives: At least I got to play around with Perlin noise and procedural generation.

Known issues: Tiles look like crap Couldn't get adjacent chunks to work with a custom rule tile so they look like garbage. Large stutters with chunk loading A general feeling of disappointment and annoyance.

Awww i'm sorry about the slowdowns, i think the game could be really fun! Would be nice to have a score or depth meter, if your inertia would add to projectiles, i think it would make more space for player decisions. It still is kinda cool

I thought it played pretty well! Thanks for making this!

I think the game idea is very cool, and execution is about 85% of the way there. With some more polish it could be quite good. Maybe having a narrower width screen and zoomed in might help for readability.

Awesome music

Simple but fun. I did find it a little difficult but that may just be that I suck.

What a great game you managed to make in 48 hours which we both know isn't enough time

I liked the mechanics and gameplay overall.

Keep up the good work!

I really liked the small details: the slight squashing of the player character when you fire, the ammo you gain flying back to the player to be collected. When hitting the exploding blocks, the reaction is very satisfying. I also liked the inventive mechanic of combining firing with the player jump/upward movement. Great work!

@thesambassador Super fun game! Second one I found with the "go down and shoot to go up", for me it didn't lag that much. Also, I found a bug that is if you start to play and don't move, just shoot, a block is indestructible.

Fun game mechanics. I also liked the minimalist visuals.

Yeah, just echoing what others have said, you seem to be overly harsh upon yourself in your description - this is a very well executed compo entry, a decently fun implementation, and a really solid base to build on if you wanted to expand on it post compo.

Really nice gameplay ideas, it works pretty well! I reached depth 150.

Graphics are basic, but it's readable.

The music is cool, though I guess it was not done by you (as you disabled it in your ratings).

Very easy to get into, and the music's pumpin' good!

I like that shooting propels you upwards, but I think the experience could be smoother if it wasn't that much.

Well done!

I think that the game is pretty fun. I really like hitting those explosives that land chain attacks. Also I realized that I can fly really far to the left and right to explore a lot of randomly generated content. :)

Unity tilemaps are definitely something that is interesting to say the least; lots to learn there. I still have yet to learn more about that subject myself.

Music bops. There is satisfying game juice. Randomly generated content is always really cool to see. Good game

I like the mechanics of having to shoot to stay afloat. It's a nice interpretation of the theme. The music track is also well done. Maybe give the player multiple lives and rare power ups to replenish them to be a bit more forgiving.

Are you kidding? This is awesome! You did a great job, especially with the explosives and particle effects.

Brb, gotta play this game some more

Amazing little game, once I figured out everything it was really fun to play. Lots more room for little gameplay elements. A multiplayer version of this could be next level. Amazing Job!

There is no much content in the game, but the concept is really cool. Honestly, you may easily flesh it out. For example, add enemies or character skills. And I think it was really fun to make the game, so you shouldn't be so negative!

A very fun idea for a score-based game! I can only agree with what others have said above: interesting propulsion mechanic, simplistic graphics which still manage to give the game satisfying finish (especially the animations, such as shooting, exploding & collecting ammo), and an amazing song to top it all off! The random generation gives some variation for each session, and honestly, if you hadn't mentioned the chunk thing I don't know that I would've even noticed. :) I do agree with dpmzi above that the jump could have been a bit shorter, or perhaps gravity a bit greater, although this may have increased difficulty too much, of course. There is also great potential for adding more content in a post-jam version to expand upon your idea. Overall, great job on a great game!

Where's my cartridge?)) Hey, it's nostalgia here! Cool, retro, stylish, quite addictive for a while. Thanks for the entry, man.

Hey, good entry! The score really depends on the map, which as I observed randomly generated. The sounds, the graphics and all fits really well together. My best score was 102 after few plays. I can imagine playing this on a mobile device :)

Nice little game, it's quite addictive and after playing, you want to play again, also i like particles effect after destroying tile. Good job!

As someone whos had a few game jams almost ruined by Unity tilemaps I absolutely feel your pain. Great job though on the music and game-feel (the screenshake feels really rewarding)!

I really enjoyed this and played it for a good while. Nice and addictive. (just a little further...). Difficulty is tuned really well for a challenge, but it'd also be fun to have a casual mode with a lot more ammo and/or less gravity. I could imagine zoning out to that... :eyes:

Fun game that reminded me many old console breakout style games. Addicting to want to play again to just go a little further next time. I did notice that occasionally bumping into things made me not die, but it seemed ok and was kinda nice to not die. :)

Lots of potential for further powerups or terrain types, special bonus levels, starting out easier (or having an easy mode), etc... Would play more.

Great game, very addictive. Great attention to detail in the animations, although I'm missing a death animation, the game stops so abruptly. The game seems a simple shooter, yet the game mechanic feels original and interesting. I found it very difficult. It would be more fun to have a lot of ammo and explosives at the start.

This is great! Movement feels good, and the explosions are pretty satisfying. The only thing I can think of that this game needs is some sort of combo system to reward accuracy or consecutive explosions or something. Very fun! :)

This was a fun game and know how it is with running out time and getting down on your game when you don't get it quite how you want and keep finding bugs at the end. But I think this was really clever, simple and liked how minimalist it was. Easy to instantly understand and pick up as a player and think that's a great thing for a jam game. Only thing I'd suggest if you get sometime to work on it again is to make the tiles stand out a bit more and differentiate between each other a bit more but I definitely like the simple clean look. Nice job.
