Gold Mine & Debt Relief by yellowsalamander

[raw]
made by yellowsalamander for Ludum Dare 48 (JAM)

You attempted to pay your rent with a night of poker at the tavern, and surprise, surprise, you lost it all. Now you are knee-deep in debt. Your last resort is to take up adventuring, and loot an abandoned mine...

CONTROLS:

WASD - Move

Mouse - Aim & Shoot

R - Reload

E- mine blocks

ADVANCED STUFF

To mine blocks you have to be right next to them and see an outline.

To change levels simply head back in the elevator.

You can mine behind the enemies and ambush them.

POST JAM UPDATES:

30/4/21: Added background music (finally). You can change the volume from the pause tab. But please, rate the game as if it didn't had music.

The game threw me into nostalgia) Nice pixel art and simple plot. I would like to see some title music in this game. Bugs did not notice. Thanks for the game

nice simple game. would have helped a little to have a bit more visual contrast between the ground and the walls, i found myself running into walls not infrequently. but overall nice entry!

Great execution of a simple concept! The art style is simple yet very effective and the lighting enhances the general atmosphere of the game. The sound department was a little barebones, as a small music or ambience track behind the game would have greatly increased the tension of the game. Gameplaywise I have no complaints: the general gameplay loop is quite satisfying. Overall good job!

Graphics are nice and the atmosphere is stressful.

You had me on the edge of my seat. Great job on the scary atmosphere. Maybe I am just old and slow but the enemies felt a bit too difficult. Maybe start with fewer/slower monsters on the upper levels of the mine and slowly increase the difficulty the further you go into the mine? Good job overall!

Nice graphics but the lack of ambient music to complement the atmosphere is too bad imo :/

I feel like the only way to win this game is to mine away without entering actual caves.
Except for that, I loved the atmosphere, I got jumpscared a few times ha ha.
Got 100 gold, then got a bit bored though.
Maybe a little ambiance sound would have been a nice addition to the atmosphere.
Overall, great little game, well-polished and with nice graphics !

@achiru Thanks, man! The reason you want to explore the caves is so you can find treasure nests, which give a lot more gold than simply mining. I should've made that more clear in the intro, though!

Really challenging, and the lighting is great too! I think it will be more fun if can increase the ammo.

Only the second game I've played in LD48 so far that really had that scary feeling of "what's coming around the corner?" The only thing that tripped me up was that WASD moved you in exactly that direction, and not in relation to which way the character is looking. Anyway, looks like a good tough game, one that needs a little more time to really get good at. Nicely done.

@andrew-hoyer I haven't even thought of the option of relative controls. Will try them out.

great game overall, but really feel the lack of goal here. hero needs money for rent, but how much? btw why it's called score, when it's gold;)

@alex-lemming You get as much gold you want/can, there's a total of 4 endings depending on how much you got.

The sounds and the lack of light make for a lot of tension haha I like it. The art is well done.

I think I was your 20th rating! You're in the running, now! This was a tricky game (I'm terrible at top down shooters) but there's a lot of polish and little things in the game that add a lot of flavor (including the dialogue). Good job <3

- For a game jam game you need to get people to like it instantly in the beginning.
- I got stuck o the first one because I kept dying
