Going Down by LurkinMcClerkin

[raw]
made by LurkinMcClerkin for Ludum Dare 48 (JAM)

cover.jpg CAN YOU MAKE IT TO THE BOTTOM FLOOR

floors.gif

Every floor you descend, the brutish chargers get more powerful, see further, and attack faster! Time your dashes to avoid damage!

dodge.gif

Your trusty Blaster can help you defeat enemies but don't get reckless, if not upgraded it WILL overheat. Give it a moment to cool down.

Check lockers and terminals for items to use.

Data Chips can make you more powerful but the data is volatile and may corrupt. Find them at computer Terminals and become your best self!

Everything has value. Even the upgrade items. Your score is determined by how much your inventory is worth at the end.

Scrap what you don't need, is that Stimpack worth keeping if you can't pick up a new data chip? Inventory management is core to your score... and survival. value2scrap.gif

Nice game ! It would have been nice to put a thumbnail to notice it in the games list, because this one doesn't have one and it will bring more people back to test it, because this game is really nice.

This page also deserves to have a screen of the game!

I just had a little trouble with the controls, the arrows to dash and shoot are not intuitive. I would have preferred the click of the mouse to shoot and space for dash.

Agreed with Ydrenor.

In the main menu I didn't figured out how to move to see the controls (I would expect to use the arrows in the menu, not wasd) so I started the game without knowing the controls.

In addition, I played the game without reading the full description on this page and I didn't figured out that I could use the chips to upgrade my powers. Is there a reason not to directly boost me instead of having to open the inventory and use the item (I didn't relaunch the game so maybe it would be obvious if I did it in game) ?

@ydrenor Thank you for the feedback. I went back through and hopefully made the controls a bit more bearable. As for the lack of a cover image or screenshots this weekend took a lot out of me so i basically slept for 2 days. Not an excuse but hopefully the new gifs and my quick and dirty cover image do it justice.

@thebmxeur This is a gameplay mechanic which I did consider BUT I still like the idea of everything, including upgrade items contributing to the value of your score at the end, so managing your inventory is a balance of survival and getting a high score.

I like the look and feel of the game. It feels like a stealthy game. Its a bit easy to hit the mosters from a distance with your gun.

@mza yup. Every floor you descend increases the enemies attack range

THIS is fun. The gameplay loop of Loot-Shoot-Level Up (or in this case down) felt good to a point where I'd even say it felt addictive :D The smiley sticker appearing on your screen was a nice contrastive touch, too! I didn't play through it yet, but I am very sure it's possible with enough patience, as I had a few really good runs! May I suggest to bind the "going down" to another key, maybe? It happened to me more than a few times that I accidently skipped the first few floors - but maybe that's just me not paying close enough attention :D

Honestly, everything else I really enjoyed! Great work!
