Woah, That's Deep. by Kryndir

[raw]
made by Kryndir for Ludum Dare 48 (JAM)

"Woah, That's Deep." is an endless exploration survival game, where you must control a little submarine through the depths and avoid the hazardous fish along the way.

CONTROLS Left Arrow Key / A -- Move the submarine to the left. Right Arrow Key / D -- Move the submarine to the right.

OBJECTIVE You must pilot your submarine friend through the depths of a dangerous trench, and avoid the enemy deep-sea fish. As your score increases, the light around your submarine will get dimmer and dimmer. The higher you're able to descend, the higher your score!

DEVELOPER'S NOTES This game is our submission to Ludum Dare 48, with the theme "Deeper and Deeper". We wanted to take a simple approach to an endless descent game, that increased in difficulty as the player progressed. All assets used were made from scratch.

Good luck to everyone else participating in the game jam, and thanks so much for checking out our game!

I love the music. Also, I thought this would be an endless game, but there's a real special treat at the end.

Very simple and straightforward, and it definitely fits the theme! With how slow the sub moves left to right and how fast things come up from the bottom of the screen, it can be pretty hard to anticipate where to move until it's too late. Might've been interesting to have a "slow down" feature that uses up more fuel? Since I didn't seem to use much fuel going left and right.

Great job!

I love the vibe. I felt like there could be a little more action though. There can be a lot of empty space and then all of the sudden a fish comes out of nowhere without much time to react. Kind of like how the snowman used to eat you at the end of Ski-free.

Really cute!

I like the art with all the cute animations. The music is great too!
The fuel mechanic is a good idea that make it appart from other similar games.

I feel like there aren't enough obstacles, and the ones that are here are a bit hard to avoid because of how slow you move?

Great simple game though!

Cool game, the eyes of the submarine are a nice touch. The enemies could be there a bit more often though :)

Darn, I really wanted to see the end and I feel like it HAS to be close to 2050 which is what I got on my best run. I'll be honest: I think this game was pretty unfair at times, sometimes I felt like I had no way at all to dodge the enemies in time. If the movement of the submarine was a bit faster and snappier I would've enjoyed it more. Since many others haven't commented on this, perhaps your game is FPS-dependent somehow? That is a pretty common pitfall when it comes to movement in Unity, multiplying with Time.deltaTime when you shouldn't (or forgetting to do so). Or perhaps I just have slower reaction times than everyone else, hehe. I actually felt like I was done after 2-3 deaths (because of how unfair it was) but then I read the comment that the game had an ending and then I went at played it like 20 more times :stuck_out_tongue: So it's definitely addictive! I like how you change the audio and the look of the "levels" as you go deeper and deeper, perhaps it would've been nice to see how far you had left to the next level as a UI element at all times though, because now you just had to kind of guess. But the graphics are cute and the audio is nice, I'm just mildly frustrated that I wasn't able to reach the end :stuck_out_tongue: But you have me wanting to play more so overall, nicely done :)

I like the graphics, the cute submarine and some menacing looking fish haha! I also liked the music!
There were times where it felt a bit hard to dodge the enemies!
I would suggest perhaps having something to collect, it could be the fuel rather than just recharging by itself over time.
Good job!

Very nice audio! Having the enemies so spread out was a bit boring, but it does fit the fuel recharge mechanic well. Also moving was a little hard at times to avoid the fish. Still a nice game!
