Iby's Descent by OddSocks

[raw]
made by OddSocks for Ludum Dare 48 (JAM)

Hey! Thanks for checking out my game submission.

The idea for this game is that you play as a sister in search of her brother, sadly I just didn't have time to get the story into the game. All you have to do is descend the level and find a door, which will lead you to a newly generated level- I won't lie, the way that works is a little sketchy, but it does work. Chests give you coins (which you can't actually do anything with!), and sometimes they give you an extra heart.

Controls:

A, D or Left/Right Arrows - Move

W or Up Arrow - jump (double and triple) + Climb Ladders

Space - fire magic wand

I originally wanted to have the ability to further increase the number of extra jumps you have. But it all got a bit tricky by the end, so decided to drop it. I also wanted levels to have different colour palettes, but again... tricky! The levels are all procedurally generated, so there is sometimes a few issues with getting around unharmed, but there is always a path. Each time you complete a level, the bonus is that everything resets - including hearts. Let's just call that a feature

Hope you have at least a little fun!

Fixed a missing reference issue which stopped the player being able to use the magic wand.

Wow, just wow, loved the game. It just happened that some moment for some reason, I couldn't shoot anymore. I would love to know if that particle system you made with unity's one or you made yours? I thought it was pretty unique when compared to other unitys particles.

If anything I love how you can triple jump it really makes it feel like you a doing some magic. That and music was great for the mood.

gameplay loop is very enjoyable, but my favorite part has got to be the character design

Absolutely adore the character design, you do so much with so little! Overall such a cute little game, love that you have a stock of jumps you can use. The particle effects were SO COOL! I loved how extravagant they were in comparison to the pixel art, made for a fun juxtaposition. Nice music and I love the pewpewpew sound effect of the magic wand. Great job!

Iby's delightful sprite instantly endeared her to me. The shadowy figures are nicely ominous.

While everything worked perfectly initially, when I reset the game from within the game, I was no longer able to shoot my wand, and enemies no longer hurt me. And even when I could shoot the wand, it didn't seem to affect anything? I loved the animation of it, though, so I did it often.

Good luck Iby. Hope you find your brother.

really neat! controls feel crisp for the most part, i only wish climbing staircases was a bit tighter. the particle effects on the wand are also cool, although at some point it stops working and i couldn't get much farther than level 4ish as a result.

@james-kusardi Thank you, and nice spot. I found it’s the ‘pew pew’ sound that is the issue. Seems on level reload the reference to the audio source is lost. I’ll check the rules to see if I can upload again. Thanks for playing :D

Nice use of procedural generation, you got a fair bit done solo!

Cool proc-gen. It does create areas where you can't get by without taking damage, I'd say you maybe want bombs or some type of ability to bypass those edge cases (like how the triple jump helps solve proc-gen problems). The physics of the movement could be tuned a little better, felt a little slippery to me. I really like the character design and run animation! Good job overall!

I just hope you will do some post-jam version, as this is really nice and solid base. Lovely art accompanied by sweet tunes that feels that there might be something sinister waiting for you down below. I have just noticed that picking the chests sometimes shows weird coin counts, but that is really nothing serious. What is serious is the job done on particle effects and procgen! Love it. Really great job done mate!

Great art style, cute sounds (Seriously the shooting sound was adorable!) And the mood of the whole game was spot on, amazing work!

The only issue I had was that health would look it's resetting when I went deeper but when I took damage I was still on my health from the previous level!

My other suggestion would be make the enemies appear more! They were creepy and cool but I tended to just avoid them!

Nice work overall! :D

Really solid entry! I like the look of the enemies and the art in general - especially the particle effects are beautiful. It really clever to give the player an indication of how often they've used the jump ability already (double/triple), I feel like that's an often overlooked thing. Very helpful! All in all, great job! :)

Good entry! I really liked the art and thought the wand's particles were great. The controls were really solid and felt nice jumping around. Keep up the good work

I have to say I really liked it. It is not easy to have a good procedurally generated level, but these work well. The graphics are pleasing and the protagonist animation is really well done despite not having climbing animation for example. Particles when shooting the look quite good as well. Hopefully you do some further development on this as it would be great if you pack some story into it and implement other ideas you had.

Keep up good work!

Congratulations on the game, I loved the particles hitting the objects, I will give suggestions for your project, make the player be forced to move fast, maybe with the screen rolling in some direction, and not making things so visible because the best way becomes predictable , and encourage the player with record achievements, if you can give me feedback too, I would be grateful, a big hug.

Nice entry! I liked the colors, graphic and especially the character design and animation. I hope the story version will be post jam implemented. I'd like to see the progress.

@justcamh Oh wow. Thanks :D
I’m currently working on an update, and I’ll be adding your look down idea. It was originally going to be a Jet Set Willy style procgen, but then found this small ‘room’ concept. Works (IMHO!) brilliantly in the updated version :D
