Diver Game [Unfinished] by bebo
The goal of this game is to dive as deep as possible while avoiding enemies and obstacles.
Controls are W+D/Left+Right arrows to move, click to shoot or toggle the dive switch, and space for a quick boost of speed.
The battery meter in the corner shows the shots/boosts remaining, and the player can take 2 (not shown) hits from attacks.
Fully re-surfacing restores your HP+battery meters.
I picked up Phaser 3 to build this game despite never having used the engine before, which I think was my first mistake. I do think Phaser works really well-- I was able to prototype the game fairly quickly, but for every feature it saved me 15 minutes of code to write came a 2 hour unexpected roadblock I'd run into as well. In future jams I should definitely "warm up" and get familiar with an engine before heading straight into a jam with it.
The real death blow to the game though was definitely burnout, though. Through about Saturday night, progress seemed to be coming along pretty well, then the wheels fell off the bus and I wound up barely working on it through the end of the jam. Unfortunately, in it's current state it doesn't feel like much of a game. I'm pretty sad I never started on the audio.
I think for future jams I have some idea of how to pace things a little more so that doesn't happen again, and if anything I'm feeling more pumped about working on games than when I started! You better believe I'll be up for a rematch in LD49!
