Gobs of the Deep by Tiseno

[raw]
made by Tiseno for Ludum Dare 48 (JAM)

Can you defeat the king Gob?

WASD, Space, Mouse, Escape or LStick, LB, RStick, RB, Start/Back

Tip: Hold the jump button to jump more easily on walls, and move toward the wall to get grip on it.

If you get stuck just hit Escape and restart! Don’t get discouraged! In a lack of time to design a level it became short but quite hard instead.

(It is actually possible to beat the game)

Created using Godot, and assets with Gimp, Paint, sfxr, BitFontMaker2.

Edit: Version 1.1 fixes broken sound for taking small amount of damage, uses the medium sound instead.

Edit2: The published browser version has become broken for some reason (2023-01-07).

Love the art for the little enemies. Pretty hard like you said, I would have preferred more light in the game. I noticed the bullets seemed to emit some, maybe even more from them would have been nice!

Hard to see your game is.

Had a good time figuring out the maze. The wall jumping mechanic was fun to play around with. I did get a moving platform to shove me into a wall a few times unfortunately. Thanks for the game.

It became a game with a good mood. Moving platforms were pushed into objects many times and I got stuck after that. in addition, it was very enjoyable!

The game's dark level makes for good mood, but could be better if the enemies and the player had lighting that reflected the game as well. The character loses health way too fast, and representing it as a number isn't the best. The player also feels hard to move, with high inertia but also high acceleration and max speed in the air, causing the player to move slowly if you only tap the directions, but go zooming if you hold the direction down.

The game has a good base that can be expanded and improved upon. Nice job!

The first coming to my mind is that the whole game is a little bit to dark. Also is a little bit too hard for me. Still it was pretty fun to explore this maze.

Hello, I liked the gameplay, but for me it's too dark, I can't see much and sounds were a bit too loud. I think some more brightness and volume bar would help a lot.

I really enjoyed the game, it was pretty hard but I got to the end of the game. The wall jumping mechanic was a good idea and it was very helpful to avoid some damage :D

You have some nice level design, especially the hint for the red powerup (you can see it when picking up the blue one), really prompts some exploration.

Sometimes it felt a bit like I was cheating (sticking to a wall and shooting downwards), but you alleviated that problem somewhat by introducing a wide arena where the player arrives in the middle.

You could have maybe slowed down the action a bit, maybe add some more health pickups and have the final boss not be a one hit kill with the red power up. But kudos for the shock moment, I actually panicked a little when I saw him.

Nice work.

Really cool world design and I enjoyed the movement and different weapon types in the game.

Pretty difficult, part of it was that I didn't get a lot of feedback on when I got hit. I did get a handle on the controls after a little bit, after which it felt quite fun to move around. The sounds for the plasma gun were very nice!

@chartle I had 3 sounds for taking damage, apparently the sound for taking small amounts of damage got broken before publishing somehow, I reexported replacing the small damage sound with the medium sound.

Difficult game ! For some reason i had a hard time figuring out the wall jump.
It seems to lack feedback on the gameplay. Like when you hit the ground after a jump. Or with the ennemies.

But overall a fun game. I tried quite some time to finish it but failed miserably ;)

Simple but effecive graphics, and very difficult! I think it needs to be a bit slower paced.

The sound when killing an enemy was too high pitched, it was somewhat irritating. Other than that, I enjoyed exploring the huge cave.

Cool game!

The movement is a bit too fast for me and I had a hard time figuring out the wall jump, had to come back here to read the instructions

The game is a bit too dark, had to change my monitor settings to see the borders properly

Won at the last moment! About to be smooshed by the mega-gob. I enjoyed playing this with a friend. We had a race to see who could beat it first. The wall jump was a bit janky, but I really liked the powerful upgrades.

Cool to see another game made with Godot. As mentioned by others, the game is too dark or without enough contrast as it is very hard to see the level. After adapting my monitor, the game was enjoyable

Game is very dark. The graphics of this needed to be bolder I think. The jump mechanics were really frustratingly difficult. I didn't enjoy the audio queues, too repetitive with little movement or balance.

The level design was good but basic but i still spent a lot of time on this!

Cool game. Platformers are really hard to make, especially in a jam, and I think this game's biggest difficulty is unpolished core mechanics. I think this concept could have worked in a top down system which would have been much faster to implement. The core idea here seems tied to the lighting and shooting, not jumping around. Well done.

The controls were hard to get a grasp of :D

The shooting was fun, jumping too.

I would appreciate some checkpoints or health packs to make it a bit easier.

Good job for your first LD game!

It seems like the goal is to kill everybody but because of how the wall jump works it seems like you can get stuck in some unwinnable states. Interesting idea though.
