The Incredible Adventures of Oleg by Nikolay Zapolnov

[raw]
made by Nikolay Zapolnov for Ludum Dare 48 (JAM)

Oleg the Hamster got bored in his cage and started digging. He was able to dig out to freedom and discovered a whole underground world, full of adventures and seeds! "Incredible!", thought Oleg and decided to dig even more, going deeper and deeper! Heading to where ghosts guard the tastiest seeds! Will there be enough space in his cheek pouches for all the treasures he is going to find?

Game includes 14 puzzle levels and an epic Boss Fight!

P.S. We do really have a hamster called Oleg (you can find his photos in the game) and he was named after our friend n1k-o! Yes, the one who created music for this game! Maybe we would even try to construct some of the levels from the game in the real world and see if the hamster can get through :)

P.P.S. No hamsters were harmed while creating of this game.

Good job.
Nice character building with the hamster!
Makes it far better than a normal game.
The music is not that fitting, do hamster enjoy such a music? :P.
Level design is nice!
Also nice graphics and modelling.

The third level is a little bit weirde, since i can't finish it when i first touch the green button before bringing out the box.

A diagonal movement would be create.

Overall nice game and i really enjoyed it!

Had a blast helping Oleg to dig deeper! Super cute hamster comic, great music, nice graphics and a good learning curve. I didn't expect such a good and fitting boss stage. Well done!

@y4nnick In the third level, you have to bring box out of the room before eating apple and use it to press the button. If you forget to free the box before pressing the button, you have to restart the level :) Thanks for playing :)

I never tried so hard to stay alive. I was way too much in love with Oleg and was devastated when I failed! Very cute game! The level design is also very good

Fun, cute game with solid level design! I like how you introduce new mechanics in steps. I reached level 11 and gave up. I do find the collision detection a little too strict, there isnt space for any close calls but thats just personal preference. A few things Id consider changing to improve game feel
- Speeding up the restart after Oleg gets killed, I want to get back into the game right away but currently Im waiting for him to bleed out :(
- Speeding up the digging and jumping animation to make it feel like a jump and more satisfying

Overall its a solid game for a jam time frame, really enjoyed all the levels I tried! I had fun :D

@almgru Thanks for playing! That's exactly the feeling we wanted to create at the end of the game.

@vrerabek We kinda wanted to make death in the game remarkable... Don't be devastated though. The real Oleg is alive and enjoying his seeds in a safe environment :)

@amar-ravi Thanks for the feedback! Indeed, collisions should be improved. If we decide to make a post-jam version, that's the first thing we are going to work on. The other points you mentioned need some polishing as well.

Super cute! Really interesting blend of sokoban puzzles and action dodging. I especially enjoyed navigating through the ghost/slime enemies.

Omg the hamster is so cute!! This game really made me happy  I wish the game was a little quicker and snappier, it felt a bit slow and movement was not very reactive. I loved the story and all the pictures of Oleg :hamster:  This is a super charming game, and I can see you guys had a lot of fun making it. Good job

I find the whole concept funny and cute! The main thing that I didn't like was the movement system. I would make the tile grid more visible and maybe make the player move through UI and not WASD. Other than that nice job!

@bqq @dorkulon @treslapin Thanks for playing! Its great you enjoyed the game.

@miqra Yeah we kinda had this idea of making people feel bad if hamster dies.

@spadekhemoglobiny Thanks for the feedback. Having UI for controls is an interesting idea.

Super Fun!!! The mechanic is simple enough to quickly get your head around and the level design does a lot with just a few elements. The puzzles weren’t unnecessarily complicated but they were still hard enough to be rewarding when you finish them. Oleg is awesome the hamster animations were perfect, and I couldn’t help boogying down the score. Great Game!!!

Great game, I died 19 times in total. The art and story are very charming. The death animation was quite surprising, I think the dissonance between it and the game's models is very effective. I do think slightly more lenient hitboxes for the hazards would be beneficial, as sometimes I would die while most of the way to the next tile (this happened a lot when pushing the boxes at the beginning of level 14), but it never got to the point that I felt frustrated.

What a beautiful game with an interesting gameplay - more than a Sokoban. The hamster is so cute and I love the main background music. You did a big work on the intro - a pleasant way to meet our little pet. I die too many times, but I have fun playing. One of my favorite entries for the 48th LudumDare session. You made my day playing my own project Tunnel48. Thank you for your kind words. I wish you the best ++

Fun game, with a personal connection. Having that personal element (that being Oleg) adds to the game have its own identity to seperate it from other games that use this puzzle genre. Nice game, it was fun to try out!

I dont see many games like this anymore. Took me back to the classical gaming days where I would struggle finding patterns to beat a level. Thank you making it a fun experience ;)

This game was super fun!

My first impression was not great- this was based on the flat colors, simple textures, simple cube level designs, etc. However- this game is so much more than what you see on the cover and I am glad we were able to dive deeper into it to get a sense of the true magic you had woven into it's underlying mechanics and design.

The biggest issue with the game has to do with the transitions from grid position to grid position; which we discussed in detail on the stream. All I can say here is once you guys tighten up that collision check, speed up the transition from spot to spot, and have a bit tighter input queueing- you'll have a complete package here that is 100%-donezo.

The sound effects were a really great point for me in this game-- I really loved the scraping and shuffling and doors squeaking etc.

I rather enjoyed the puzzle design- even if a bit simplistic or traditional in nature.

The character and character animations are incredible... they enhance the overall immersion and intimacy one feels with the character quite a bit. Im not sure if I cared for the blood during deaths because the game asked us to become a bit attached to our hamster and so each of these deaths felt a bit grotesque or over the top... but I can't say it really hurt the experience itself... just that I would have preferred not to confront the reality of the deaths.

Overall we absolutely had fun with this and are mighty impressed with your work!

Thank you very much for bringing this by the stream and letting us play it!

P.S. I will send you a link to the video once I have it uploaded to YouTube. :)

I love that you used your pet as a spring board for the game. So cute! Very well designed, good puzzles, challenging without being too difficult. The music was fitting too.

This game had elements that many would consider cheap and raw, such as the visuals and the animations but I was so invested in the story of Oleg (and his cuteness) that it didn't bother me at all - actually I was REALLY amused and I laughed a lot because of the "cheap" elements. I'm also a sucker for puzzles so it's right up my alley. Thank you for this experience! Good job!

Oleg is just adorable  Love this litte intro and outro, the music and the way you put Oleg stuff all over the UI.

The levels are good designed and made a good job explaining new gameplay elements. I in particular liked level 8 because depending on which button you put the first crate you may have to walk a longer was (or at least I think so ) I like the fact that the boss fight uses normal level elements and would have wished 1 or 2 more boss stages there.

Collisions probably need some work though. The hitboxes are probably the size of tiles and therefore collisions between Oleg and chainsaws but especially Oleg and ghost felt unfair (BTW I like the death animation although it tears my heart apart every time) Also the fact that fances collide like normal blocks is sometimes a bit confusing in combination with ghosts.

One last thing: At the begining I thought Oleg was a tad too slow, but I think this was just because of the way he moves (I later got used to it and speed was fine). Maybe you can try to highlight the tile where he would go after he reached his current destination to give the player immediate feedback on input (but this is really just a minor thing)

Overall I had a lot of fun with this game!
