About the game

Not all games are created equal. From the outset, this one was surely promising enough to lose some sleep over. Deeply satisfying arcade gameplay. Shallow cheesy plot. Comic book grade villains. And a tough as nails hero to kick their asses!

In "Krepkiy Oreshek" ("A hard nut to crack") you are playing as a Soviet Commando Frogman on a suicidal mission in the North Pacific in the aftermath of the Second World War. You must dive deeper and deeper in an experimental bathyscaphe and battle the secret forces of a rogue Japanese admiral, who is still fighting the long-lost war.

Stop him from unleashing the unstoppable horde of fanatical followers on the unsuspecting world!

Windows build added!

Added alternative links due to problems with our hosting provider. content is the same, no post-jam changes.

Controls

WASD to move, Mouse to aim, LMB to fire.

Good luck!

P.S. To run the game on macOS Big Sur you can enter the following in the terminal: sudo xattr -rd com.apple.quarantine ~/Downloads/gameLD48_KO.app followed by your administrator password.

Nicely done! Huge credit to your animations, the way bullets deformed when they hit, and the shapes of the pod moved around when changing directions, really nice touches.

I was a little worried after a bit that there was no ending and it was just an infinite scroller, but right before I gave up and closed it, I heard the music change and knew I was in for a boss battle. A very nice soundtrack as well! Perhaps some indicator to show that you're making progress towards and ending would help.

Nice Game! I love the graphics and the global design/texture. The music is repetitive but quite good :)

Really cool animation! I didn't know that there was an ending until coming here to write a comment (I guess I could have also read the description, but I didn't). I agree that some sort of indicator would have been nice, really good otherwise though.

Congats to the team. At first i was "Hum there is quite a few ennemie" but after 1 minutes i was "Go away enemies you're too much for me" :D I had fun to play with.
PS: love the submarine and the animations of the game.

Animations and art is amazing, really love the bubbles and explosions. Like the sound too. Gameplay is fine I didnt like how enemies will shoot outside the screen, they should only shoot when they appear on screen. Overall really good.

Really liked the Russian name of the protagonist! Sound and animations are amazing, gameplay seems a bit unfair, but overall nice.

What a great game! Incredible atmosphere, gameplay and animations. Graphics and historical mention give it a nice toutch... and all are well polished.

For a moment, I was a little sad because I thought it was an endless game - until I saw the first comment. So I go back to the game, play it all over again and, to my surprise ... tadã:

The only thing I missed was a "depth" marker on the screen. If I hadn't seen that comment, I probably wouldn't have made it to the final scene.

Another thing that could be a small "bug" is that at a certain point in the boss' fight, the sfx stopped working - i could only hear the music - wich is parfect, by the way.

Overall, i liked this game very much. Great work!

Very cool! As others have said, the animations really do make the game. The explosions are particularly satisfying! The slight "porthole shift" on your sphere with movement is great effective feedback as well. Love the bathysphere art overall, and the music is good too. I'm not very good at reflex shooters, but was able to win this one! Very fun!

Really digging the animation of the sphere when strafing, and the bullet effects. Overall it was fun: a good length and pacing and good controls. I quickly realized that there was no reason to not hold the fire button down the entire time - there could be some design space there to add a mechanic to make the gameplay a bit more unique. There's a philosophy that says "if there is a button for the player to press, you should also give them a reason not to press it".

Hahahaha I really like your short introduction video, I think it will be more fun to add a two-player battle or cooperation mode

@bmacintosh Maybe we'll come up with something. There is a feature of lighting your way, which we didn't do due to time constraints...

Was really hard to tell how far I had gotten. Until I checked the comments I thought this was an endless game.

Otherwise I really love the way this game plays and controls! A touch more variety in the enemies would have been good as well.

@bamallama We could have more variety, but, though it may sound counter-intuitive, we have underestimated ourselves this time. We were absolutely sure we won't have time to do more than two enemies, that's why the code was written in a way, that it accepted only two models. No skins support either.
In hindsight, it seems stupid, as everything else in the game is super configurable. We have many varieties of enemy behaviours (sentries, chasers etc.), but just two models. That's why the boss is just the same as regular enemies.
Oh well, we'll be smarter next time.

@waibiwaibi This time it is especially hard to get others to play our game. We have nice balance stats, but no one plays our game. :(
So, @maxgarena made this video in a hope that we'll get some more ratings. :)
As for cooperative gameplay and two-player battle mode, well, we could do, we could...

Heyhey!

Lovely game you have here, really fun overall

The only things that stands out negatively for me is the rocks artstyle which feel completely out of place: kinda realistic render while the character, enemies, and vfx are cute stylised (and very stylish :sunglasses: ), and the fact that you have no health bars for the enemies.

But outside of this, always impressed to see games made with custom game engine, especially when they are well made :) Really liked the vfx and the music :relieved: And yes, I had a good time overall playing your game guys o/

Bravo to all of you !

@soarendev Sorry about the rocks :crying_cat_face: I made those, and I accept all responsibility. They are made from the same stuff as the background, and both are out of style, but our only artist, a top notch animator, I must say! [Just check this out](https://www.instagram.com/bogdanduns_art/) was busy with animation of the characters.
As for the health bars of the enemies - we have added a health bar of the character at the last moment, because initially we had planned to show health on character/enemy models. Had to scrap that feature sadly.

Thanks for your comments!

The animations and art are amazing. The gameplay is good. I didn't like the music and the sfx as I believe did not fit into the game's mood. Overall, a really good entry.
