Johnny Debt by haztro

[raw]
made by haztro for Ludum Dare 48 (COMPO)

Johnny is poor, very poor. Lucky for him he's got a silver tongue and morals questionable enough to swindle a town's worth of people for every penny they have. With 100 dollars to his name he sets out to borrow his way to financial freedom...or plunge deeper and deeper into crippling debt.

How to Play

WASD to move and SPACEBAR to borrow/pay money.

Run around the town borrowing money from people to pay your bills (food, rent). Whenever you successfully pay someone back you'll be able to borrow more money the next time - make sure you pay them back on time though! The aim of the game is to acquire the three houses then last as long as possible as you accrue more and more debt. Enjoy :)

Tools - Godot 3.3 - Aseprite - bfxr

Bugfixes - Reexported HTML5 version using GLES2 since it was lagging terribly.

The strategy wasn't immediately obvious to me... no way to make money? Just debt yourself deeper and deeper into oblivion?

The game lags to oblivion, dunno if it's just me. Looks like a neat concept, where you get to borrow more and more as you get deeper in debt as the game continues. If the lag is fixed, I'll replay it but at the moment I don't think I can rate it :(

@billnotic Hey thanks for trying it out. Was that when playing in the browser? I might remove that option if it's unplayable.

@mausimus Yep, keep borrowing to pay the bills - the lenders will slowly let you borrow more money, but you're still forced to run around accumulating debt ;)

Enjoyable at the start, but it got monotonous quite quick. Looks quite nice, and was basically completely bug free. Great submission, but needs music of some sort.

This was fun, but it was hard to tell what you had to do at the start

I am no good at these micromanagement and memory type games. I like the concept and the frantic Ponzi schemeing gameplay. It wasn't immediately apparent what I was supposed to be doing. Like the food decrements automatically and I think when it runs out you just lose money to buy more? I thought it was another thing that I was supposed to be managing.

I really liked the notifications on the screen that keep track of the people that you owe. Maybe put them on the side of the screen in the direction of the person?

Very clever use of the theme
I noticed that you put a lot of care into designing a great UI, which is often the most neglected part of most game jam submissions. This makes your game stand out as more polished! Good job!

Very fun game. I borrowed everyones money and didn't pay back, they all ran after me. It was a great experience.

The game loop got stale pretty quick, but the central mechanics of running around and pinging money off people felt really nice and were complemented by pleasant UI, audio and visuals. Really impressive polish for a compo game!

It was a fun experience, but a bit tricky to understand. The mood was cool and nice idea!

what an awesome/original take on the theme! I was confused at first because I felt like there was no way to properly repay folks I would be borring money from, until I realized that was the whole purpose of the game, using a ponzi scheme to get rich fast by accumulating the biggest debts possible, living the life and then trying to survive while having to face the reality of having to pay back folks. Awesome graphics and refreshing gameplay. I did find it a bit hard to judge where the folks I owned money to were located using just the arrow on their profile picture. Awesome game!

This a great idea, very refreshing not so see a mining or diving game with this theme (I'm guilty of that myself, I know :P). Now I really wanna play a game that just makes you run a proper Ponzi scheme and try to get away with it! Oh and I really love the name of your game!

What a great take on the theme! Maybe there should be some timer indicator to show when the people you borrowed from are about to go nuclear but I'm not even sure it's needed honestly. It may be enough as it is now with them being in line in the order you borrowed from them. The compass indicator is really nice though and everything is nice and polished. Only missing some music.

I really like the idea, but I wish there was some sort of in-game tutorial to help the player figure it all out. In any case, this was a lot of fun! I love the character artwork for all the little people in game. Great work.
