THIEFEUS: Rynth, Repeat by Dorkulon

[raw]
made by Dorkulon for Ludum Dare 48 (JAM)

THE GAME

  • Explore! In THIEFEUS, players brave the mythical 🐂 Minotaur’s ever-shifting labyrinth in search of treasure.
  • Gather loot! Venture ever deeper and collect as much loot 💎💰 as you can but be careful and do so quietly.
  • Move silently! Shh! 🤫 The Minotaur patrols the halls of the labyrinth and will chase you . Should you be caught, it’s game over
  • Rynth, Repeat! The game features several different labyrinths to explore 🗺️ each with four entrances, so each run is different! I guess that would make them “mazes” and not “labyrinths” but I’m not going to argue with a Minotaur over semantics.

HOW TO PLAY

Movement

  • Use WASD, the arrow keys, or click the arrows on your compass to navigate the labyrinth
  • Time your movements within the green safe zone in your movement indicator to move quietly.
  • If you make too much noise, the Minotaur will come looking for you.

Minotaur Chase

  • When being chased, try to move inside the safe zone until the Minotaur stops its search.
  • If the Minotaur catches up with you, you'll need to HIDE.

Hiding from the Minotaur

  • Click the Hide button or hit the Space Bar while the tracker is in the safe zone, but be quick! You have precious few moments until the Minotaur finds you!
  • Hide enough times to fill the search bar (up to the closed eye) and you'll have eluded the monster.
  • If the bar reaches the open eye, the Minotaur will catch you and the game is over.

Searching for Treasure

  • If you enter a searchable space, the search magnifying glass will appear.
  • Search quietly by clicking the magnifying glass or hitting the space bar while the tracker is in the safe zone.
  • Searching noisily will alert the Minotaur!
  • Searching will yield a Minotaur coin!
  • Each level contains the Minotaur's Heart, the giant ruby of legend. It's worth a lot of coin, but taking it will
  • Escape with as much loot as you can for a high score.

One of best games that i see on jam. Pretty art style and interesting theme realization. Great sounds. Rhythm windows are too big)

I assumed you were supposed to click in the green but the shhh icon made it seem like I was supposed to quiet down. Had a lot of trouble finding any loot, was easy enough to escape without being caught but even when I died I got more points. Definitely nice atmosphere and art.

You picked a very nice theme :) I was not patient enough, so he got me!

We (@treslapin) balanced the game to make it harder now ... blame her for the added minotaur misery :joy:

Love the art and the UI in particular is very creative and fun to look at. My only complaint is that I didn't realize at first that I can use the arrow keys to move, and I enjoyed it more after that. It might just be me :joy: but I think that making sure that the player is aware of that might be something to add if you make a future version. Cool game!

One of the best games from the jam so far. The art is great and the gameplay is really interesting as well as the sound. Heard the minotaur but I'm not sure if I actually encountered it though... HS: 4550! Happy with that :D

Nice, it reminds of the one of the first games ever made, where you are trying to find one monster at the same time trying to escape from the others. But yours makes much more sense)

I really love the artstyle. The UI is just super cool. And the gameplay - it's simple, but enjoyable. Good work!

Haha, nice game! I managed to escape the minotaur multiple times, but then he got me caught in the long corridor with no exit. I was scared and thought about imminent death! :) But then I discovered you have the "hide" mechanic and was able to run away.

Cool game, nice to play :) Very smooth graphics and awesome minotaur sound.

This was amazing to play! I really liked the art style, the background music and sound design were amazing and the gameplay mechanic was very interesting and fun. And I actually got jumpscared the first time the Minotaur noticed me :'). Great game!

Awesome game! The music really creates a great mood. I love how the shiny things appear sometimes to tell where the treasure is. The mechanics are also enjoyable. I just wish the bar is closer to my character so I can focus more in the map instead of the bottom of the screen. Great job!

Interesting interpretation of the theme and super polished! I enjoyed the turn based movement coupled with the rhythm windows. Overall it's a neat, smart, replayable design that really brings out the 'deeper and deeper' theme. Especially once you find an exit and decide to continue hunting. Great job!

A really interesting mechanic for being quiet, simple to understand but not too easy to actually act according to. And nice that you have a chance to get away even when in a tight spot rather than getting an isntant game over.

The game looks great, it plays as intended and the concept is something new. I liked it. Looks like a lot of work went into it and the overall theme of the game fit nicely. The being quiet mechanic is a nice touch and forces you to take your time. Nice work.

The art, music and dynamic ambience are impressive ! It really makes the game immersive and a very pleasant experience. The game mechanics are nice, the fact that it forces a slow pace also fit very well with the overall ambience! It feels a bit empty sometimes though when the minautor is not chasing. Maybe a higher difficulty or adding events would help to keep the stakes high. Good job to you all :)

I really liked the idea of this game a lot! I think the tension could have been ramped up a lot if the minotaur moved on its' own. Great work!

Wonderfully creative, a great proof-of-concept for a game mechanic + super polished and cute UI and sound. A simple way to make the theme even more apparent would've been to add the option of going 'deeper' (generate a new level, but keep your score) as an alternative to exiting the labyrinth - just a thought!

Great game. I was wondering what would happen if I move while being loud. And I found out what happened the hard way. Never thought a ludum dare game would scare me xd

This was a really cool game, although I wish the minotaur was always in the labyrinths with you, and then you missing the timing on moving would alert it to your location instead of the minotaur only appearing when fail the movement timing enough

This was fun! Trying to time movement with the bar was such an interesting idea. I love the artstyle in the game too! Great work!

Very polished! Artworks, music, everything is adding a lot to the mood, and the feeling experience. It takes a little time to feel enough confident with the controls and specific gameplay to move quickly, but I managed to finish the game with full gold and minautor heart in the pocket. I liked playing this game, thank you for this great entry!

Simple art (music and drawings) and challenging game. Was the mechanics of walking in silence inspired by the Undertale bosses?
I really liked your game. Some levels with different difficulties would be an interesting addition.

Good job to the group.

Good art, with an interesting mechanic. I think maybe the timing bar could display close to the character, because it felt a bit disconnected having to constantly watch the bar instead of the playing field!

Great job! I never found the minotaur to be that menacing, even if I was caught I still had all the opportunities in the world to hide from him and continue along my way. I love the artwork, the character looks great! and the music and sound effects are top notch too! Really great job on the game.

Interesting idea! I included it in my compilation video series of a bunch of LDJAM games!
