Rock Monster by Myko

[raw]
made by Myko for Ludum Dare 48 (COMPO)

Have you ever thought about what you would do if you were a rock monster that got lost on the surface? Dig your way back down to your family of course!

Use the ASD keys to dig sideways and downwards, rock monsters obviously can't jump.

Eating rocks isn't easy so it takes energy, watch your energy bar in the top left corner. Eating gold ore replenishes some energy.

Should you find some delicious rubies to eat you can use Spacebar to trigger an explosion.

You can also eat some heavy iron ore, but I'll let you figure out what that does on your own!

Absolutely fantastic! So happy to say that I beat the game. The art was great, game feel was great, and the mechanics worked perfectly together. Great job!

This game is absolutely brilliant! I had so much fun playing, I was laughing out loud while plunging through the blocks :) You balanced all the resources and tools out really well, and made for a fun neatly packaged experience.

This gives me some mega miner vibes, haha.

I never understood what the iron does, but I think it's what contributed to the extended falls. When those happen, I feel like I'm going on such a huge power trip, just chewing through everything!

Game has simple controls, yet has you making decisions all the time which is great.

In terms of balance, Everything felt right except for the rubies over-abundance. I felt like I could explode whenever I wanted to. But then again, I didn't abuse the explosives, so perhaps the balance is okay for that. Maybe splitting the ruby into 2 different blocks so that ones can explode the field, and one gives you the explosive ability might be something.

Awesome game overall. The graphics are really attractive, and it's what pulled me in to click :)

Interesting concept and very satisfying to break the blocks, especially when you fall through several. It started somewhat difficult but ended up being too easy when there was a lot of gold and rubies. Great game!

Really great game! Was able to get all the way to the bottom. The sound design combined with the particles really make you feel great when you're digging. I will say that towards the end it gets pretty easy since you're loaded with rubies and gold, but the combos you'd get with iron just feel incredible to pull off so I'm not sure I can flaw that. Very good job and keep it up!

The controls and feel were amazing! It's just missing something in between to keep you going

It's actually so satisfying falling down like a hundred blocks at once. I really like the flow of the game. At the beginning, it's kinda hard and your main goal is to just build up weight, so you can then fall down extremely far in the endgame.
Fun game!

Good fun. Very satisfying once that ball was rolling and you're churning through rocks and dirt! Satisfying also to collect stuff. I found it frustrating that the win/fail state seemed to depend on taking that fun mechanic away. The fun part should remain I think. Make its win/fail states dependent on something else perhaps? Great work in a short space of time. Reminded me of an old DOS game called Digger.

The gameplay was pretty addicting and I love that visual style, although I felt that the font didn't really with the rest of the graphics, but that's a very minor issue.

Very pleasing to play :) . It was a great feeling to get on a downward smash streak.

Fits together in a very satisfying way! All the mechanics make sense in a way that doesn't need any tutorial text, which I really like. In addition, the audio effects and particle effects are very crunchy, and it makes for a good game feel.

The default-font starting text doesn't do the rest of the game justice, it's very polished overall. Fun game!

![rock.png](///raw/bf9/f/z/40d39.png) Very nice! Quick to figure out what to do, combo smashing was the most satisfying thing for a long time :D

✔️ I really liked the ruby mechanic. It was especially nice when an explosion could launch you into a massive chain reaction sending you rocketing downwards.

✔️ Overall a nice amount of polish with the sound and particles.

➖ I found it a bit weird that it got easier as you progressed since there were more gems.

Nice game! I noticed that when using lowercase letter to move in the WebGL build the "a" and "s" work but the "d" key does not work. I was able to play using the capital letters though.

Pretty great! My first game I got very unlucky, no energy anywhere, had to restart. My second game I made it all the way to the wonderful ending, and had a lot of fun, although almost died a couple times. Never *quite* figured out what the white gems did, other than increase a number on the screen, and almost certainly related to the unplanned comboing that happened, but wasn't quite sure how that worked.

Visuals were great, sound wasn't bad. I'd have liked a little more consistent difficulty curve - I almost stopped around depth 700 when I had been doing the same thing over and over for quite a while and figured I'd seen all there was to see in the game, though I could imagine if one got lucky with combos they would blow right past that area, and it was still surprisingly well balanced and fun for a jam game =).

Firstly, I'm not sure how you made such a simple mechanic *feel* so solid. I'm not sure what magic you implanted into those controls, but they work wonderfully. Second, the wonderful 90s rock-guy visuals had me in a permanent smile.

As for feedback, I wish there was more to do see as we navigate downward, and it seemed to get easier as I went further, which feels counterintuitive (unless it's to lull me into a false sense of security for a boss?)

Very cool stuff, I'd love to see where you take the idea in the future!

Really well done. We went for something similar but different mechanics. The falling down with the weight at the end was really satisfying. Balanced enough to be doable but challenging at the end. Congrats!

The family at the end is such a cute touch! I think the core gameplay is great and I can only imagine more powerups and blocktypes coming into play for progressively harder depths! Great comp entry!

Great game! The family at the end is super cute, and I really liked all of the animations. Getting big chains of blocks, either from multiple explosions in a row or from a big fall, was suuuuuper satisfying! I think I fell like 200 units in one go at one point! Extremely good job!

Fun and simple game, I really liked it. I really wanted to go deeper and deeper! The pixel art is nice and cute and all the different type of blocks are easy to spot. Music would have been a cool addition and the SFX are a little to loud especially when you have to hear them multiple times every seconds. Overall i had fun playing it! GG !

Nice game !

I feel like it's not possible to loose because even I get stuck or out of energy I just have to press space and continue.
