A Shallow Dive by onnofal

[raw]
made by onnofal for Ludum Dare 48 (COMPO)

Far from being very original - I expect the diving and digging theme approaches to be repeating a lot this time. No revolutionary idea in the mechanics either, still one of the busiest LD jams for me overall.

One day of asset creation and one day of coding. Not much time left for the level design, maybe post jam, hence the game is (already traditionally) very short.

Your music is a lot of fun! Weirdly somber and spooky, but enjoyable. Fun and quick game!

Nice puzzle game. I'm a bit unsure of how the harpoon works. Is it every second move that it gets shot out?

Thanks for playing. @kromeboy @zeppelingames I did not want to communicate it straightforwardly and let the player find the arm/launch pattern out, while getting through the first room. But seems like it is confusing :)

Took me a seocnd to realise how the harpoon worked. Liked the puzzles. Quite polished, though I might have preferred if the character moved slightly faster. Great job.

Very cool game. I think it needs to be explained a bit more clearly or differently how the harpoon needs 1 turn to recharge, but once you figure that out it's very good.

I think you can get stuck in the final room if you start incorrectly though!

Lovely polish! All the feedback I can give is that I wanted more levels!

Best entry i've seen so far! So much polish, amazing pixel art style and color palette choise for the mood. And idea with hook activating half the time is a great and fresh approach on old and well known puzzle game typpe.
My recomendations would be to not restart on death in games where levels stay the same)

The art is really great, appealing and complete. Nice touch having the letters LD blink :) At first I thought the game wasn't working, I pressed arrow keys and nothing happened (must have pressed them all expect down...) Really nice how you took a well known game mechanic and changed it with the harpoon and different theme. Well done!

@danga wow seriously? I worried about this, thinking about implementing some restart when this happens, but it would just reveal my bad puzzle design

@corporation true indeed, if there would be more levels than those two I fixed in last hour, definitely a good practice not to let you struggle through everything again and again

@adamwatters, @generalsturgeon and @vasco-freitas thanks, very appreciated

Awesome! I dig the artstyle, used palette, fitting audio. Reminds me old handheld games. Only one thing - I would continue from last reached level when I die. Now I need to start all over again. But it's a great entry!

Like everyone else is saying: a cool puzzle game with a lot of polish. The only issue is being unsure about how the harpoon mechanic works. Also, maybe make so when you die you respawn at the start of the area, so you don't have to keeep replaying the beginning of the game.

Very nice!

A very nice and clean puzzle game. A bit on the short side but I tend to prefer short game that are well polished liked this one that longer ones.

Really polished, beautiful and fun little game! Really nicely done in 48 hours!

The biggest complaint I have is the restart from the beginning when you die. It felt a bit annoying having to redo all the levels that I already passed before. It felt a bit like adding insult to injury. I felt this especially when I got stuck in the last level, and I could not do anything but die. (Although in the end it was ofcourse just my fault for getting stuck :p)

Another point of feedback is that at first I did not really understand how the spear worked. I died at some point thinking I would fire my spear, but I didnt and died. Then I understood that you move alternatingly with and without the spear, and everything made sense.

Thanks a lot for making this! It felt great to play, and it looked beautiful. The pixel art was amazing, and the colorpalette fit the them wonderfully. Great job! :D

@wuppos Many thanks, for playing and your time and efforts with a very detailed feedback. Nicely wrapping up all major flaws of the rushed design :) If I come back and reopen the project in the future, those should definitely be taken care of.
