Deep Paper by axeltherabbit

[raw]
made by axeltherabbit for Ludum Dare 48 (COMPO)

This game is really weird (like any other game I made :D), I'm not even sure if people will understand how to play it, my bad.

I wanted to experiment with 2D in 3D and stop motion, turns out 48 hours are not enough do make a whole game and do any stopmotion. :(

I really liked the paper graphics. Never seen before! It's such a unique approach to making the graphics.

Pretty innovative idea to make the game out of paper :P literally. Nice!

The visual concept is so great! The game was pretty frustrating though: it's very hard to see what you're shooting if your ship is in the way.

I loved the graphics. The controls suck and you can't see what's in front of you but that's what makes the game challenging and fun! Good job.

Grrrrrr you got me with that "PS5 version"

First off, the graphics are absolutely unique and I love them. Very funny setting too, and the game has the potential to be something great. However, I only wish you implemented slightly better controls for that tunneé and maybe a radar so I know what's killing me when I attempt to fight the Catkren :P
Also, it took me a bit of time to figure out what I was doing

Still, one of the best submissions so far. Love it! Great job!

I really liked the paper art style, but I couldn't figure out what to do. I died nearly 10 times before giving up. I don't even know what I died to. And I couldn't tell what "firing engines" did other than make a number go... down? The inverted Y axis but normal X axis made controls feel really wonky and unintuitive.

Thank you everyone! I know the controls are bad and not having points of reference doesn't help and I'm actually surprised someone managed to arrive at the end, I wanted to do many things and I didn't have much time left :D

Cool idea! I remember playing a claymation game as a kid and have thought about trying to create something like this! I imagine it is pretty time consuming!

That was... very ambitious ^^. Couldn't beat the boss, kept on being killed by ennemies I couldn't see and jumping each time, I wanted to see the catken from up close but in the end I couldn't and I taped out. Probably one of the most unique and original art style of all the entries, but sadly the gameplay doesn't really work...

Refreshing change of graphics! I would like to see more stop motion games^^ Gameplay wise I wasn't really sure how to be good. I think the best strategy was to just not move the camera so the space-kraken would die automatically. The first level had a very weird difficulty curve this way, cause there were no enemies left for the second half of the level. I like the intro, I hoped to see more of that click away paper 'mechanic'.

The idea is very interesting, I figured out how to play very quickly. I liked it, I had never played such a game before.

The Art style was nice. I would have liked to be able to invert the mouse Y axis. As mentioned above, having the ship in the middle of the screen really prevents from seeing anything. In the "tunnel" the only way I managed to get throw it is by not moving the mouse and clicking to hopefully kill the enemies.

At the boss I ran into performance issues where the game slowed down to a crawl (1 of my CPU core was maxed out). The first time it solved itself after 10 seconds, the second time I had to kill the game as it didn't seem to resolve.

I tried the PS5 version but it was a bit buggy.

Very neat visual effects - the second level especially. I couldn't beat the Catkren though - I kept getting blindsided by enemies from behind (or whichever direction in paper subspace). Tricky controls, but a lot of fun.

"I wanted to experiment with 2D in 3D and stop motion [...]" During LD? What a brave person! ;)
I must do the same, this game is really unique (in a good way)! I love the approach to the artistic style!

Haha that was fun, got to the third level i think and those kittens providing some jump scares. I liked the whole asthetic you achieved - but i found it a bit annoying that my ship had to be directly over the enemy and obscure it to shoot it, a bit like my LD48 game actually. But it added to the kitten scares so had a good time. Great job and thank you

@nyxkn press space to move, move around with the mouse, shoot with left mouse click, the first thing you have to do is go inside the black hole, then exit it, then kill the big monster at the end, if you are lost you can check how far you are from the target with the "distance" written in the top left corner.
you will have always to watch around for enemies

SO a few things.. the inverted controls on the vertical axis were super disorienting and either the entire thing needs to be inverted or non-inverted. It was also super hard to see under the ship and maybe an offset of the player to the crosshairs would make it better to see whats going on. Those things being said, super cool idea. I loved the stop motion feel that you were going for and the vibe you built.

The mac version doesn't work (it says that the file "is corrupted"). I tried to download the source code to compile it myself, but it doesn't seem to be there... I would gladly play the game if you can help me!

@phlebas the file seems fine to me but I don't have a Mac to try it, I have re-uploaded a fresh one anyway.

how are you trying to run it?

The steps should be:

`cd ~/Downloads`

`unzip DeepPaper.zip`

`chmod +x DeepPaper.app`

`open -a ./DeepPaper.app`

Could I have the full log?

Fantastic paper graphics concept! It's the most unique graphics execution I've seen this LD.

@axeltherabbit it stil doesnt work :(. Before, it said that "The file is damaged and should be moved to the trash". After chmod, it says "The application “DeepPaper.app” can’t be opened" if I double-click it, and "LSOpenURLsWithRole() failed with error -10810" if i try to run it from the terminal. If you have made it with godot (as the icon seems to suggest) i think i'll be able to compile the source code myself, but on the github link I can't find the actual game (there are just the readme and the .gitignore files)

@phlebas oh, I forgot to push the commit, sorry, everything should be there now.

I googled the error, it seems a generic error :/

Maybe I need a Mac to export for OSX?? I've not clue tbh, let me know if you manage to compile it

@axeltherabbit I've been able to play it through godot: Thanks!
The hand-drawn paper graphics are beautiful!

Innovative and cool graphics! I liked specially the cat-paw cursor. Really tough game. Inverting the mouse's y axis was really confusing for me. I think you were trying to emulate a plane's stick but when looking down it's somewhat confusing. Fun game either way. Nice work!

Controls were messy at first but I managed to go until the black hole (was stuck in there, too hard for me xD). Nice paper graphics ! :cat:

Looks like I'm not alone in feeling that the inverted y-axis on the mouse controls was very difficult to get used to. Once I got to the tunnel, I got very frustrated with not being able to see the tiny enemies as I was moving towards them and died too many times :( It is a very difficult game.

That said, the paper/graph paper aesthetic has a cool feel to it (especially with the effects/colors added to them).

I liked the paper graphics, really cool and innovative idea. Unfortunately it was difficult to shoot the enemies because your ship blocks the view. I managed to make it to the Catkren, but had to give up since I kept getting killed by off screen enemies.
It would be interesting to see a game with this graphics style if you had more time to develop and polish the gameplay, nice job!

The graphics are interesting, but they make the game harder to play. Maybe mouse-only with left and right click would be easier, or two controller sticks.
