Dwarven Descent by Chumzy

[raw]
made by Chumzy for Ludum Dare 48 (COMPO)

You play as a dwarf and your goal is to make it to the bottom of the cave while getting as high a score as you can. You can pick things up and throw them around to help you fend off enemies and get farther down. There are 8 treasures for you to try and find before making it down to increase your score. Killing Enemies, Collecting Coins, and getting to the bottom faster also all increase your score.

This is alright! Enemies feel quite hard to kill, though, especially since you are throwing away your only weapon in order to hit them once.

Skeleton graphics is gold! I wish there was a grappling hook though, that'd make for some good slaying.

For some reason I'm just getting a brown screen on itch.io when I hit play. Looks fun, let me know if you troubleshoot it; I'd like to play.

Running away worked fine so I didn't bother killing them. Nice job.

This looks pretty good! I just reached the yellow area when i died. One thing I noticed, though, is that the bats are very hard to see with the dark background at times.

Worked on Edge but not Chrome.

@thecommonthug That had happened to me when I tried to play my game in incognito mode on chrome so I think there is a problem with chrome that makes it not work occasionally.

Bombs are very strong :D
I think, concept of throwing your weapon for attack is cool. And it can evolve. Collecting gold is not necessary, but sometimes it makes you think how pick up it and it's good goal. Coins fly off nicely.

@chumzy @pe7e Figured it out. Gotta allow cookies. Fun game. Loved the graphics. Could have used some more audio.

Fun little game to play through. Throwing your weapon was interesting, though having to throw what you're holding to pick up healing was a bit weird.

@thecommonthug That makes sense, I'll add that as a note on the itch.io page

Nice Game, the player movement was really fuild and a really nice tutorial to follow up. But it was quite hard to eliminate enemies and the game quickly became exhausting. and i couldn't see the bats near the bottom since they camoflauged. other than that, a really good game :)

I like that you have different enemy types and the puzzle aspect of getting the treasure

You got me for the word "dwarf", I love dwarfs! I like that you give the player choice of either running away and ending the game with a lower score, or going hard way and trying to score extra points. Also the puzzle aspect of the game is well done!

Nice job! I really like the 1 action multiple purposes style with throwing everything. And the items bounce well off things when you throw them. Those particles when you get coins are great!

This game is incredibly charming, well done! Variety of environments is also great. There was an issue where it sometimes seemed like I couldn't use the pickaxe because I would pick it up out of the air as I threw it.

Your game is maybe a bit too hard for me, but I have to say I am not really good at games.

I didn't make it to the end at my first tries, but I tried again, concentrating on advancing and not killing every enemy I encountered, and it was much easier, and I eventually got to the end.

I really appreciated the different tiles as you go deeper, and the different enemies too.
The animations of the character, the enemies and the effects when you collect a treasure are very cool and beautiful.

Just like @zimny11 , the word dwarf got my attention immediately! And the game corresponds well to the idea of a dwarf story.

I think this is a strong entry, especially for a compo game!
Good work!

Very, very nice graphics! The dwarf is gorgeous!

I liked the level design, lots of nice details (including that treasure hidden at plain sight on the first screen).

I found it easy to get to the end, but hard to get the treasures along the way (which is an interesting take on difficulty).

My biggest complaint would be the controls, for two reasons:

1) I have only two hands :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye: Seriously: I need one hand to control the direction, another hand to jump, and yet another one to use the mouse. Maybe jumping with the right mouse button could work better?

2) I found it really difficult to get those wall jumps right. It was a matter of luck for me, actually. (Maybe you could have added some walljumping instructions to the otherwise excellent tutorial?)

Overall a very polished game for the compo! Kudos!

Lovely game! I had a bit of a hard time when there were a lot of enemies but otherwise it was really fun to aim/kill enemies while chasing treasures downhill. Great execution and fun gameplay. Lovely entry!

I like the throwing mechanic; it was very refreshing to not just shoot projectiles out of a gun like most other games. The death screen showing time, score, and number of treasures found lets players try to optimize whatever they think is funnest, which is really cool.

Hey man, its a good idea for the game. I just missed the audio, and maybe the enemies could die also with just one pickaxe hit, like the bomb!

This was a really neat game. Two of the highlighs for me were:
- The in-game tutorial
- The treasure pick-up animation and SFX

I ended up in the following situation, where all I could do was wait to die:

But that didn't detract from the game's enjoyment.

It's a very solid COMPO entry, congratulations!
