The Core by guimoliveira

[raw]
made by guimoliveira for Ludum Dare 48 (JAM)

I didn't really like the theme and I didn't have much time to create this game either.
The idea of the game is to get to the core of the planet, because it is being hit by antimatter. :earth_americas:

Controls: + [A or Left arrow] and [D or Right arrow]: move + [W or Up arrow]: jump + [LMB]: place & destroy platforms and keep the wave away

Tips: + To recover your health get hearts. + To place a platform click on the desired place. (needs matter) + To remove a platform click & hold on the platform. + To keep the wave of antimatter away click & hold on it when you see it. (needs matter) + To get matter get balls of matter. + To see more platforms, slow down.

Tools: + Editor: Atom
+ Code: Everything made during the jam (no engine, no frameworks, no libs) - only JavaScript
+ Images: Made during the jam using Krita
+ Sounds: Made during the jam using bfxr
+ Music: Made during the jam using LMMS

Changelog: + Intro: Skip added + Languages: Portuguese and spanish added + Camera: I did not change. It is as it should be. The space on the upper side is necessary to be able to see the antimatter wave in time. To see more platforms, slow down. + I did not create a separate link for this version, because there were no relevant changes.

The game is not infinite. It ends when you reach the core of the planet (about 5000km).
My current best time is 04:06.

Good luck and have fun! :v:

The intro is very very slow (80 seconds!), you should add a way to skip it or a button to display the text faster.

The camera a bit too high and too slow, we can only see 2 or 3 platforms at once, which renders 90% of the screen useless and makes it hard to see where we are jumping.

However, I like the fact we can place platforms! Most scroller games like this don't allow you to build anything.

Intro was too long, and it is too hard to play within this visible area.

Still a good re-make of this old game!

Intro was far too long. Gameplay was fun and fairly challenging. Music felt pretty repetitive tho

I really like it. Intro, like others say, is too long. Gameplay is great, and is just hard enough I want to play it more. For a one person game, well done. Could use some nicer graphics/music, but solid and fun.

Juice it up and this could be a mobile game, easy.

I agree, that the intro was quite long, but yet i think it was really good, to set the proper mood! The voice over was quite fitting for the rest of the game expierience in my opinion.
Also I played for quite a long time, since I found it really catchy and wanted to see how fast down I can get. Took me a while to understand, that the camera is moving further down as with the pace you set xDD
Really fun game, I think you did a gre<t job here! Also I like the artwork, especially the little guy you have to save, so cute! Thanks for this game :-)

Very cool game. I liked the idea of being able to place your own platforms.

This created some interesting situations like building a "bridge" of platforms when trying to reach a heart or matter-circle thats very far away, or franticly placing some platforms to catch the player after missing a platform.

As others have pointed out, it would be cool, if you could see further ahead.

The artstyle is very simple. The music is good but a bit repetitve.

All in all I had a lot of fun playing this, good job! (especially considering you didn't like the theme and didn't have much time!)

Nice job! A bit hard to play since the camera was a bit slow as some other stated, game progression feels good and it's very interesting. You should make the initial screen skippable, it's a bit too long!. Great job, congrats on your game :D

Nice game, camera could definately be lower but I really liked the mechanics. Took some time until I understood that placing platforms costs matter, that there is fall damage and just going down the stairs given, won't cause any of those bars to deplet.
But I still can't get lower than the second stage with the orange background - also seems like the camera only moves fast, when the player is quite at the bottom of the screen - and like the levels are changed after each start, but maybe it was just because it is a fast game and I skipped parts by falling down. xD

Still, nice entry, thanks for making the game :D

Cool Game! sometimes it would have been nice if the camera would have been at bit lower so you can think of strategy where to place a platform or where you can jump to.
But other than that a really cool and fun game

The good
---

* Nice touch with the story at the beginning
* Music really gives of the right vibe. It feel very lava like and reminds me of the lava city in zelda breath of the wild!
* Platform placing / removing is nice
* Lava really makes you feel the pressure once it reaches you in the lower levels
* Platforms are not always connected, which forces you to use the matter you have gathered

The bad
---

* Music (although it has the right vibe as I mentioned) is a bit rough in the ears, and can get a bit annoying and repetitive (especially if you play the game a few times)
* Clicking on the lava sometimes places a platform
* Matter and life particles spawn in very awkward places. I am not sure whether this is a design decision, but sometimes it is not worth taking an matter particle because you spent more matter getting there! Especially with the limited view downwards, you don't know how far you will fall and if it is worth sacrificing your life points to make a jump. Could have the particles spawn a bit closer to the platforms (but not too close).

Suggestions
---

* The intro is quite long, so I think a scrolling text (either manual or star wars style) could make it better for faster readers or people who skip everything
* Very subjective opinion, but I think that matter cost for stopping the antimatter could be cheaper
* Could add high score and leaderboards!

Summary
---

A really simple game with a nice core idea and already makes for an interesting game. It does feel a bit unbalanced though and also unpolished in terms of graphics. I did play through it though a few times and I can saty I liked it.

Congrats on the game and keep up the good work!!

Wow, this is awesome! Some of the best gameplay I've tried so far! The audio is a bit grating, but otherwise this is a really great game. I can see it working really well on mobile, but I played on desktop. This is the sort of mobile game I would play while pooping and get distracted and stay in the bathroom for an extra 5 minutes.

A simple and fun game. I liked the mechanics and how it fits with the game's theme. However, the camera takes a long time to respond when the player falls from a great height. I also liked the fact that the game has subtitles in Portuguese.
