Me:Tree! - New Roots by Groggi

[raw]
made by Groggi for Ludum Dare 48 (JAM)

Because the theme was so fitting I decided to work and improve on my game released at LD46: Me:Tree. You have to go deep in order to reach high! cover.jpg

Drag the little seed to grow your first branch. There is no win condition. Just relax and grow your tree. I planned to implement a highscore system but could not finish in time.

  • You need 10 nutrients to grow a new branch.
  • If you run out of energy, your roots stop collecting water or nutrients.
  • If you run out of water, your leafs begin to fall down.
  • If you run out of nutrients, you can not grow any further and loose the game. (game over calculations still a bit buggy sometimes, so sorry! :)
  • Energy is stored in leafs. So if you loose leafs you also loose their stored energy.
  • Nutrients are stored in branches. The more branches you have the more nutrients you can store.
  • Water is stored in roots. The more roots you have, the more water you can store.

The two youngest segments of each branch have leafs to collect energy, the two youngest segments of each root have little hairs to collect water or nutrients. There are little puddles (yellowish dots) in the ground that boost your water collection rate but deplete after a while. Sunrays will boost your energy collection rate but also your water consumption rate, so be careful. ;)

Always try to branch out a little with smaller branches, because you get a little bit of water or energy for every leaf or roothair outside water puddles and sunrays.

Have fun! I am looking forward to your feedback!

Please use Chrome to play. On Firefox the game seems to be broken right now. Thanks to @jrevel for pointing that out!

Feel free to test out the post-jam version, but remember to only vote and rate the actual ld-version

  • leafs where directly falling down when growing more than one branch at a time
  • fixed spawn ressources positions
  • deactivated some debugging highlights that where still active
  • day night cycle: sun was not returning after first day
  • sound was playing when aborting drag without growing
  • fixed broken ressouce respawn
  • infotext for grow costs didnt appear correctly
  • you could grow 2 branches with less than 20 minerals
  • fixed some strange visible glitches
  • first time dragging did not work on first click
  • clouds disappeaed when raining
  • rainclouds wouldn't disappear if branches are grown while raining
  • fixed water consumption calculation
  • fixed sun collection calculation outside sunrays

beautiful graphics and music. Calming and enjoyable game. I was interested in the idea, I really want to play. I wish you good luck with your development, keep going. If possible, make it available for download for more convenient use.

@art-ether Thanks for your kind words and for playing my game!
@erkanec Wow! Thanks a lot! I hope it was not the first game you played this Ludum Dare ;)
@woolchara Thanks for trying out my game. Creative mode should work like normal. The problem is, that you do not receive any feedback starting the game in this mode. You have to drag from your seed in order to grow your new branches and roots. Feel free to try it out again!

What a cool game :)
During my brainstorm I had the idea of doing a game where you play a tree that has to grow its roots, i'm happy someone had that idea and pushed it that well. Some things are a bit confusing, especially the moment when you lose that tend to happen when I'm not careful with my gauges, but as there is no sign before that I were always caught off guard. But the ambience is there, I like the relaxing music that go perfectly with the graphics.

PS: On firefox I had the same problem as @woolchara, the drag action didn't work, and the framerate was relaly low. I switched to chrome and it worked well.

Very cool idea. Love the music and atmosphere! Gameplay seems pretty punishing though - I couldn't seem to find a good direction/balance to grow that didn't result is super quick tree death :(

I enjoyed creative mode(played it first) because it just felt like a little relaxing activity to do with some pretty colors and smooth animations. I tried out survival, but I was kind of having a hard time understanding 😅 To be honest I think I just really liked creative that I just wanted to get back to it when I tried survival so I didn't reallllyyy try to understand,

Was having issues like folks above but then tried to play it in Chrome and was finally able to do something, so it looks like it just doesn't work in Firefox.

Super-promising idea, and it looks really great, but the balance seems off. I've tried survival mode a couple dozen times, before & after reading the instructions on this page, but I never manage to grow the tree for more than a couple of minutes. It seems to me that there's too few nutrients in the ground, but also the rain comes too soon - even though I've manage to survive a couple of times till the sun reappears, but died soon afterwards.

really nice job. games like this remind me that a huge part of art isn't just drawing out hundreds of super detailed assets - it's about the overall colors, theme, animations, and cohesiveness.
one suggestion i have is to automatically zoom out as the tree grows bigger so you don't have to scroll up and down to see everything. i also think there's probably a way to make better use of the horizontal space here, given that this game is primarily vertical, but most screens are horizontal. (this could be a good thing - in my opinion, this would make an awesome mobile game)
overall though this game is so soothing and beautiful, really enjoyed it, congrats!

Graphics are great and the audio as well, really relaxing. However I'm not sure if I've misunderstood how you should think when you decide which nutrient to go for next, but I'm just not able to get that far because either the nutrients are too far away or I run out of sun because it starts to rain. Maybe the rain could be more interesting if it also provided new shallow water sources?

Otherwise really neat, good work!

This game seems awesome! I think the sun going away bug is back (or maybe I'm not understanding?) for survival mode. I can't get past the very first part.

Great idea, awesome graphics and such good music, it fits perfectly.

Maybe an in-game tutorial would be helpful, I couldn't place more than 2 roots without dying. It's a bit hard to understand for me.

@jrevel Thanks a lot for your feedback and your hint to the bug in firefox! Would have had trouble finding that out.

@kiptok @emiliabea @dankar Thanks for your kind words!

@wizard-sino @saintchristopher777 @maniulo @okamit @aboogoost @mololo I am really sorry you all had to suffer because of my bad programming and balancing! But thanks to you for pointing out the problems so I could fix them!

@fawnblue Thanks a lot for your nice feedback and suggestions.

I will play and rate all your games! Thanks a lot to you all for playing my game.

@groggi No suffering! I played a couple more times just now with your updates, and was able to survive much longer. Also had some fun playing around with creative mode, which is pretty fun. Realized that you can grow multiple trees with one root system - pretty cool! Cheers

Really lovely little game! The music and graphics have a nice calming ambiance.

I went straight for survival and it took me a few goes to figure out how it works, but when I did it was fairly straightforward. I'd love to see this extended into a series of increasingly-difficult puzzles, both to introduce the concepts and then to provide some more interesting gameplay :)

Sometimes I found that if I dragged to some nutrients / water, it wouldn't actually connect. Not sure if I was doing something wrong.

Overall this is a nice idea and well made :)

This game is beautiful, poetic, relaxing. The music is smooth too :musical_score:

I could play it for hours (and I probably will).

Very good job !

After making tons of Bonzais in Creative mode.

Pros:

- Game is beautiful
- Wonderful color-pallete
- Tears-worthy piano music
- Mood and relaxation is really there
- Trying to catch how fragile the life can be
- Love the root / tree mechanic as well as branching off in every direction
- Creative mode is huge plus

Cons:

- Very subjective, but I found UI a bit too confusing.
- As well as indicating a priority on resources... Maybe it's just me

Overall a gem that needs just a slight polish. Great Job!

Whoa!! What an amazing experience. Played for almost an hour and didn't even notice it. One of the best entries for me in this jam so far. Just played the latest version. Particularly, I didn't notice the "tutorial" steps at the beginning because I was too focused in the underground. Just noticed it after losing a few tries ^^

Cool idea an has lot of potential. I created root themed game myself so I have a soft spot for root games, but your idea is fantastic! It is really hard and I had lot of trouble realizing why I was dying. It was also hard to see when the roots would get to the nutrient source or not.
I hope you continue this project and would love to play it again.

Astonishing game! What a concept and execution, really amazing. I must confess I'm too eager most of the time and keep dying early, but surely want to follow on this and try it more. Also, the sound effects are okay, and the music is surely beautiful and sets a great mood, but it could go even greater with it's own sound design. Still, really great job!

@leekanarchism Thank you for your positive Feedback. I was thinking about implementing some kind of puzzle element like other trees blocking the light or animals that would eat your roots...

@verygenuinecraze Wow! Thank you so much, that is awesome to hear!

@mikoziq Thank you for your feedback. I really appreciate that. The UI definately needs some work!

@bernardex That is so cool. Hearing that you spent so much time in my game and enjoyed. Feels great! Thank you!

@boclow Thank you! I already gave some feedback on your impressive game. I really enjoyed it. :)

@olddog Thank you so much! Keep on trying ;)

@waltsontanaka Thank you for your feedback and pointing out the sound design. I am not a sound guy and have no experience with sound design. I have not thought about it, but I should work on this or maybe get some help. Your game definately has some great sound design! :)

Really love the concept here, I can see this being a fantastic and relaxing mobile title. The gameplay still needs a bit of balancing, but for a compo this is great. I lost many trees, but still wanted to keep coming back to do a little better. Great work!

I played the Jam version and encountered a bug with scrolling once I got decently far down I could not always scroll to the bottom of my tree roots to continue. Scrolling up and down would let me get to the bottom at random. Bug aside it was pretty cool :)

@ausstein Thank you so much for testing out my game. It was a real valuable insight. Showed me some flaws of the game I didn't think about.
I am so sorry you had to go through all this suffering at the beginning. 🙂
But it made me really happy to see you having fun at last.

Thank you so much for the effort you put into this!
