Deep Freeze by ckane144

[raw]
made by ckane144 for Ludum Dare 48 (JAM)

LOG - SOL 310: People are getting antsy. Some swear they hear whispers in the cave walls. They like to avoid the upper decks for their fancy bunkers, but personally I’m more scared of what’s down there. Up here I can breath, I know what I face. Down there, you never know who your enemy is.

Overview: Your spaceship has inexplicably crash landed at the top of a mysterious alien mountain. The caves seem inviting at first, but you aren't to lose sight of your mission. You pick up your trusty shotgun, bundle up, and head inside. There seems to be no sign of human life in here...but is that a roar I hear? Primary mission: Make your way down through the caverns and discover the source of the everlasting heat before you freeze. Secondary mission: Survive.

I was not sure if I could shoot at the items or not, so I wasted some of my bullets haha!
The gameplay was fun! I played it till some point, and it exited, so I assume I finished it :)

Хорошая игра! В конце только непонятно, что делать со светящимся шариком - наверное, это Game Over ^_^

Nice animations and nice feel to the movement and shooting. I wasn't always sure what I was doing but I enjoyed it

Simple and fun.
One issues is that when the gun is pointed to the left the player left-right sprites are swapped and they instead face the opposite direction from where they're walking. Another is that the music seems a little more upbeat than the situation led me to believe it should be. I enjoyed the music, it just felt out of place.
Otherwise, very nicely done!

It was a fun little game to play. A gameplay critique I have is that the beasts feel like they just "appear". If they had glowing red eyes or something to give you a little warning they were close then I wouldn't feel like I kept getting damaged every time.

Honestly this is a great game, I enjoyed the smooth gameplay, the amazing art, and the fitting sound effects. My main problem with the game is that there's nothing to notify you of events, like no hurt animation or death animation. Other than that, great game!

@malfeasance Thanks, we are working to patch some of those smaller quality of life issues. Really appreciate you playing though.

I liked the mood. I wish the camera was a little zoomed out more, I felt like I got lost easy because I could see much of the map. Also I ended up getting stuck between and object and the wall and couldn't get out.

Wasn't clear to me whether there's an actual win condition or nor given the number of enemies in the (last?) room.

View distance was really short and I usually walked into bears before I had a chance to shoot them.

Mechanics a bit unclear in a few spots but was able to feel them out on my second run.

Otherwise had a good time. Liked setting and mood, added a good bit of tension.

@tengusheath thank you, we're considering something like a minimap to remedy that issue, what do you think? Or were you thinking more like a hit space bar to zoom out camera?

@yellowsalamander that's all due to @mkane1317 !!!

@fireslash thanks for that awesome feedback, the win condition is simply to finish!!

Most of the art looked polished and cohesive, and there were some nice lighting effects. The bears were really scary! I froze to death after collecting to propane tanks, and I wasn't really sure where to go from there. Nice game!

@manan yes I think we are learning alot about good level design trying to provide better direction to the player through level building. Thanks for the awesome feedback.

This was very good! Shooting was fun, visuals were nice and the music was fantastic! The level design were a bit disorienting at times, but thats fine. This was a very solid entry, good job!

I missed some sort of win screen in the end, I did feel like I didn't accomplish anything. Other than that, solid entry!

@skosnowich that's a great idea. That would be a great reward for a short experience

Indulging pixel art. Music seemed too soft for this kind of survival-like setting. Felt a bit hard, but atmospheric. Nice shotgun animation).
