Magic Takes Root by PeculiarCarrot

Fairies are expert tree-keepers (and they sell the most delicious syrup at farmers markets). This fairy's job is to help guide the tree's roots so it'll grow big and strong.

Be careful not to guide your root into rocks, and of course avoid the local wildlife. The fairy has special friends underground who shower her with gifts. Be sure to say hello! As you go deeper, you may encounter some pesky imps...

Thanks to our fairy's magic, the root is protected from fire, but she herself can get badly burned. Now go! Make the root grow as deep as it can!

CONTROLS:

  • Move the root with WASD

  • Move the fairy with the mouse

Be careful, the root has a tendency to follow the fairy!

I cannot express the DEPTHS of my feelings. I have a major interest in mole society and hat collection. The implicit lore in this game is fascinating. Also, the voice lines are quite good. The duality of vulnerability of fairy vs root was compelling. Though I felt like the rodent ambushing the fairy was a little difficultly sudden. The animation of the root growing was very lush and lively. Thank you!

This is fantastic, I remember when I was trying to come up with ideas, I was thinking about trying a game with roots trying to find water but couldn't workout how to make it work, I loved seeing your game plays, well done!

Nice work, this really hit the theme hard. I really like how the root was animated. It felt good to control too. Adding the fairy as the mouse control along with the root is a good feature. I liked it!

This game is just amazing. It feels so well polished and the mechanics are somewhat innovative and super interesting. But I think the best thing about this game are all the little details everywhere.

At first I was upset that I kept dying because nothing hit me. Then I realized its the root you need to guide. lol I really should read the rules on these things more. Good concept though. Funny little jokes in there too with the moles.

Silly is as silly does. And I does a lot of silly. I really liked it even though I'm awful at it. I'll go to bed tonight thinking "NOT THE ROOT!" Actually it was a great game. I would have liked to start at a root branch sometimes just to see what was deeper down.

Hey this is really cool and very well executed, I also took the "Tree roots" approach but on a very different angle. Art is super cute, music fits really well and it works like a charm, it s inviting for replay and also for short sessions. Great job! Keep up the good work! :D

Fun game with a neat dual gameplay. Creative concept, and appropriate for the theme. The art is really great, and the music and sounds are fun too. I liked adding hats to my fairy.

Wow, that's one of the best games I've played so far in this jam! Pretty original game mechanics. I really wonder how you programmed that root, it moves really smoothly! The challenge is decent when you need to focus on two things at the same time. Even when played by two people it's pretty tough and I like it. Amazing atmosphere with cute graphics, sounds and a bright soundtrack. Overall, makes a really great game, one can see that you put your soul into it, especially those moles! Awesome job!

I like the idea really suits well with the theme. Also the feel of double character makes it pretty fun. Well done for the art and the animation. The game could be a little quicker or more challlenging but overall great game! Well done!

This game is cute, I loved the stacking hats, and the moles were adorable. The only quibble I have is that the camera and root were locked at an odd ratio together. I would have preferred the root to be up further on the screen so that I could see ahead of it a little more and react better. But otherwise it was a cute little game and I liked it.

I love the silly narrative, I love stacking hats (TF2 anyone?) and I love the enthusiastic voice work. This game really appeals to my senses and after playing game after game that tries too much and fails, it's refreshing to see such a wonderful execution of a fun idea. Well done!

@lelulagames Yes, we noticed that the root and screen can get a bit weird, especially if the fairy is at the bottom of the screen or you make the root go down (nyoom!). A trick I do is to hold up. While the root can't go up, pressing up makes it slow down, which can let the root get closer to the top of the screen. :)

Funny and unique game, the mechaninc its very easy to understand and the graphics are very cute. Maybe the rocks could be a little smaler! Music and sound effects very chill, congrats for the game!

Love the game mechanics displayed in this game. The roots grow smoothly, and all the little details are impressive for the weekend you had to make it all in. Not to mention the fantastic atmosphere you've created. The graphic, design, and sound all come together for a light hearted presentation that's hard to not get lost in. Overall, this is a wonderful game that I'd love to see expanded into something bigger. It's clear the team put a LOT into this and I can't recommend it enough.
