Unstable Relation by Mathiouza

[raw]
made by Mathiouza for Ludum Dare 49 (COMPO)

Here is my game!

You play as a guy who is in an unstable relationship with your girl friend.

This is my first game in 3D ever, and my return to Ludum Dare after 3 years of skipping it. I lost so much time just because I didn't know how to do certain things with Godot.

I also spent too much time on art. Eh... I wanted to do so much more, but you know how Ludum Dare is.

Well, on the bright side, I learned a lot, and I guess next time will be more smooth.

I hope you will have a good time playing it though.

This was fun! I was expecting a purely narrative game going in (I saw your posts on Twitter), so I enjoyed the surprise when it turned out it was a fight to the death against the trash I refused to take out. Really good for your first 3D / Godot Game!

@reccy Thank you :) I should have done that x) I had the idea of making a narrative game midway through the jam, so I didn't I wouldn't have time to make something better in this area either.

I had a good laugh!

The main game is well made. First: The twist to switch in to a resident evil feeling third person cleaner after I thought this is a narrative game, was great. The mood of the dark areas and the distance fog is greatly done. I got small resident evil vibes here. I had to laugh when I discovered the ability to roll sideways which was not the least necessary, but that made it even more funny since it was so uber! I especially liked that the bags would jump exactly the distance that I anticipated, so they never jumped into myself with me thinking: "oh common!". And the characters are well made. I loved the wobbling arms in the dialog and the look of the deer partners.

# My 5 cents on this game
- Super nice game! Well done in this short 48 hours.
- The dialog room was small but the few assets in there underlined the discussion perfectly!
- The music could have been even more darker to make that resident evil feeling even stronger.
- I'd expected some bags creeping up behind me. That would have been cool. Maybe accompanied by that nice acoustic shocking sound when the bags appear in the camera view :)
- The end part of the dialogue could have been 2 or 3 sentences longer, for my taste

Overall: Super super cool!

Who knew all that was needed to have the perfect relationship was to empty out the trash room by teleporting to the sentient trash dimension and showing them what for.

10/10
Astounded you made all of this in 48 hours.

@guine @mrknd94 Thanks!

@mordrick Thank you for the long review! I must admit I was in a rush when I made the last dialogue sequence, I was more focused on finishing the game loop than thinking about dialogues x)

@faux-grey Life's easy eh?

I'm glad you all liked it. As I said in the description, I'm not really confident with what I made, so I'm really surprised to see the game is well received! Thank you!

I thought it will be a completed different kind of game after the initial intro. It was a nice surprise.
I liked the antecipation the bag of trash give to you so you can dash in the right moment.

Actually pretty impressive. Gameplay felt solid, and the rolls were sick.

I will say that I found it weird that when you are walking, you're direction is based on your wasd inputs, but when you attack your direction is based on your mouse look. Feels like it should be one or the other.

But yeah, that's my only problem, graphics were pretty cool and you had some nice features.

I really liked the the look of the game! Did not expect the game to become what it was after reading the description haha. Very clean. Actually, I was able to cheese it a little by spamming side-roll and left click so the i-frames allowed me to not get hit at all while still being able to hit the trash. Maybe when you touch the trash, it would hurt you, or shorten the invincibility window a tad bit? Otherwise, it is a really great job!

Thanks everyone for the feedback!

@ethanzech I thought it would have been weird not to be able to walk sideway, and not to be able to hit where we are looking at. But you're right, it's a bit weird. There is a better solution than that, obviously.

@pkzinpo I may change the description x) I was a bit disappointed of myself when I wrote this, so I did not really think about it ahah x) And you're right about the invincibility, I already shorten it a bit, but it's not enough.

Good job on the graphics, love the character models...its rare to see 3d graphics since they take a lot of time. Well done on that and the animations. One thing to consider is weirdos like me who like FPS with inverted controls...really hard to play otherwise. Overall good job and welcome back to LD!

Note on MacOS. The Godot MacOS versions won't work out of the box unless its compiled on MacOS. A way around this is to clear the attributes from the terminal by running "sudo xattr -cr No\ Room\ For\ You\ Demons.app"

Well done with that plot twist! The game is fun, you've made a great work on the graphics and the music!

Well done!

@kbf123 Thanks for the kind words!

@solah Me too x) I was planning on making a boss like that, but, you know, time ran out x) In fact I wanted to make an other level with taxes. The goal of the game would have been to play those levels, but if you don't manage to clean a level, then the girlfriend is not happy. So if, in the end, she noticed you didn't do what she said, then you would have got the bad ending. The whole thing interspersed with dialogues where you could lie on what you did, etc. That was what the game should have look like if I had like 5 more days ahahah x) Thank you for the comment ^^

Well, it's really impressive to see a 3D entry in compo. Well done!

Also, the controls are neat, responding very well. It's interesting that the trash bags are at a regular size in the intro dialog, but in the game they became huge. I think it is clever that they become active enemies and the lights go out, representing the antagonism towards the player as soon as he is supposed to do something.

Good job!

Very impressive compo entry! The 3d models have a lot of detail! 10/10 trash animations. I did find the gameplay a bit easy as you can just walk backwards and wait for the enemies to lunge then bash them- but for all you got in during a compo entry this is very impressive! Love the dodge roll animation too

My first playthrough, I killed all of the trash bags, then nothing happened and I was trapped in Trash Zone. I didn't see any other comments mentioning this, so I played through again and there was indeed an ending cutscene the second time, so if you're reading through comments trying to see if there's an ending, try playing again!

As for my actual feedback, the 3d art was very cute, the theme was very fun and game-jammy, and the music was pretty neat as well! This is super good for a first 3D game!

@bassguitarbill I never had this problem before. Either it's a real bug, or it might be because one trash bag stuck itself behind a trash can lid. There is especially one trash bag which spawns in a really odd position, so I think it could be that.

And thanks everyone for the feedback and the kind words! I greatly appreciate it! :)

I too didn't expect to fight against trash bags

The art was very well done, good job! The animations are also very nice considering you had 48 hours to make them, although if you were to release a full game, they would definitely need some extra love to make them more natural.

I wasn't a big fan of the music, at first it made me think my headset is broken  I appreciate the fact that it was there, though. More sound effects would be nice (such as a swing or a sound of pain when you get hit).

The gameplay could have felt a bit better as well. I think someone already mentioned that it was a bit weird that the character rotated toward the movement direction and then snapped to the camera view when I started attacking. I'd suggest to have the character stay locked to the camera at all times and do a strafe when I press A or D. The current behaviour made me think I had to rotate myself toward the trash bag in order to hit it (which cost me some amount of life).

Oh and IMHO it would also be better to allow moving diagonally (after pressing A and W for example).

The jumps to the side were a nice touch and allowed me to survive the game .

I would also have some way to differentiate between the "background" trash bags and the ones attacking you. At first I was also fighting the background and was confused when it didn't respond

I also wasn't the only one confused, one trash bag lingered in the middle of the map motionless until I went back to kill it, might be a bug.

That may look like a lot of criticism, but I actually think this game is very impressive - it's the small things

Great work!

Oh deer, what a mess! luckily I'm a super sneaky cleaning d-ee-aring ninja, trash bags shiver in fear when they see me coming down dark alleyways equipped with my legendary broom!

Great game, overall great job, audio, graphics, models, animations(especialy the roll animation) and the gameplay, pretty neat! plot had me on the edge of my seat!

Wow, this is the first 3D game made in Godot that actually worked without any lagspikes or bugs! Would you mind telling your secrets or is it generally safe now to delve into 3D (haven't looked into it for a long time)?

Other than that - simple idea, though the animation of the trashbags jumping was great, as was the epic dodging animation :D

Thanks everyone again! It really means a lot to me. And to be honest, I was expecting such great reviews ahah x) I take note of everything for the next time I will work on something like that. Actually, it might be cool to try to polish the game.

@trexxak To be honest, I didn't really take care of performance or anything, so I guess Godot is now capable of things it wasn't before. Like, this is the first game I made in 3D ever, so I don't really know what I should have done to make the performance better anyway x) I actually feared that it would be laggy on some PC, but I guess that's fine.

Ah yes. I made the same mistake of making my first ever 3D game this jam, and in Godot as well. Yeah, art stuff takes a deceptive amount of time when the third dimension comes into play. Very nice little game, as short as it is. The attack happening so long after actually pressing the button made the character feel a little sluggish, and the enemy attacks were slightly hard to judge since they were moving straight towards the camera, but after getting used to it the combat actually felt quite good and the dash was really fun to use. The game looks very nice and I like the art style. I can also appreciate the effort you put into actually implementing animations considering the time limit.

Impressive work for your first 3d game! Combining cutscene and gameplay is a task by itself. I initially failed hacking and slashing recklessly, but when I took things slower and played more like a Souls game, I succeeded. The choice of deer for characters is interesting, and the experience felt quite personal.

Nice job on the graphics! The game was fairly easy once I realised that I was essentially invincible when spamming the dash keys :D I felt like the mouse motions were a bit slow, could've been nice to be able to adjust mouse sensitivity.

I was caught off guard when I was suddenly thrown into a third-person action game. I was actually having a difficult time comprehending the instructions while taking on evil garbage bags. I very much approve of the dash ability, for being very satisfying, and for having a great animation.

Animation in general, is pretty well made here. I can't really speak from experience, not being very familiar with 3D animation, and especially not with Godot. And I was considering saying this when I commented on one of your blog posts, but you certainly kick my ass in art skills.

This game was surprisingly short, but that's alright. I tend to spend an hour on each game, including commenting on them. Combat felt nice, the trash bags having a windup is also a great detail. Though the game does take a bit to start up for me.

I'll say, you did a significantly better job than me in all categories! Wonderful job!
