Ice Moon by LTyrosine

[raw]
made by LTyrosine for Ludum Dare 49 (JAM)

This game places you as a driver of a mining vehicle, with a mission on making $200 credits collecting and refining minerals from surface, working for the Rigel Mining Corporation.

Unfortunately, this is the frozen surface of an ice moon where rubber slide like butter on fry.

This is a futuristic high-tech vehicle, they said, it will be an easy job, they said...

Gameplay

Controls

Control is a strong word here as will you be sliding most of the time  but use W/S keys to accelerate/reverse and A/S to steer left/right. Shift is for braking (or something close to it).

Your vehicle uses energy to move, you can recharge it on the Energy Stations facilities present on the moon surface.

EnergyStation.png

Your vehicle is also able to fly (pressing spacebar) in short bursts, using jet rockets and a lot of energy. It can be useful to help on climbing hard terrains. While in flight, you can use WASD keys to direct the craft.

Mining and getting credits

There are some minerals and gems scattered through the surface. Your vehicle is able to scoop them from ground and store in the cargo bay.

Minerals.png

You get credits by brining them to a Refinery.

Upgrades

UpgradeStation.png

Using some of your gained credits, many of your vehicle devices can be upgrade in an Upgrade Station. Each station upgrades a single device type only. Engine will get stronger, tires will improve gripping, cargo bay will get more useful area, rockets will get stronger and cooldown faster and battery will be able to hold more charge.

Each device can be upgrade 2 times

Map

You start the game inside your drop ship with 3 facilities marked in the map: A near Energy Station, an Upgrade Station and a Refinery.

There are many other buildings that can be found exploring the moon surface.

When you manage to make $200 credits you can finally leave this frozen rock behind, just enter the drop ship again.

Thank you for playing!

Developer fixed link, so its pretty neat game, shows there was lots of effort since there is many features (camera that records emeralds in the back, ability for emeralds to fall out so you have to be careful, energy refilling, rocket mode + overheating, map of the area etc..). However it was quite hard to maneuver the vehicle around moon surfcae since it slides almost too much for my taste, but i guess thats the whole point, and i got used to it after few minutes anyways.

@achef122 thank you for give it another chance, I had several problems with WebGL builds (Ambient Occlusion not working in this Unity version), HTTPS/HTTP hosting but I finally fixed it.

Finally got time to prepare the entry page too.

@ltyrosine No problem. You should prepare at least thumbnail soon after the deadline though, since most people only click on games with thumbnail. I personally don't care but most people do. Also i think one needs to rate other games so the classic & smart balance are higher so your game is sorted more up top, since most people only scroll trough first few pages. People usually put so much effort into games but forget about the page so games are then without feedback. But i also realize alot of people go on jams for fun and for personal experience not for anything else.

So keep developing and good luck on the next game jam

Wow, the graphics remind me of a game from my childhood: Colobot. Really like the feeling. And that camera showing the cargo is such a great touch! Well done

@ivanpavlov Man, is that when you had to program your rovers? If yes, we had the same deja-vu feeling (although, I didn't play it a lot as I didn't know coding at the time and so wasn't able to do much).

@ltyrosine Nice game, all the features functionning really good. I would say it's too difficult for my tastes (losing all my precious ores climbing a cliff was frustrating). Also, I think you could enhance the exploration experience by adding some scripted event (like a geyser erupting or a boulder rolling as we pass nearby) and some variety in the landscape. Obviously, considering you're alone, it's an impressive entry.

Great overall, would have been nicer if the camera angle was tiny bit better. The engine sound is amazing

Looks beautiful. But it seems a little slow. I don't know... I traveled around the map a bit and then gave up. Still it's an amazing game.

wow this game was fantastic! I really liked the ambient sounds and the bit of dynamic audio with the engine of the spacecraft. I love the vibe that I was alone in space just doing tasks. Fantastic job!!!

The gameplay was really nice although the build was a bit laggy on my machine.

One of the things that I felt was a really nice touch was the carrier system. I was constantly scared of knocking gems out of the holder and sure enough, I did. The sounds were great. Although I feel there could have been some feature where you could damage the rover. I hit the spaceship by mistake and was like, Oh boy, that was scary. Overall, nice game!

Hey ! your game reminds me of a project I did in my first year of study ^^
The controls are a bit hard to masteries, but that's really fun to slide on the map.
Good job on this game dude.

I could play this for hours. Really reminds me of Elite Dangerous driving around on moons and collecting resources. I will say that I don't think the vehicle being unstable was the most creative approach to the theme, but it is a very impressive game to have made in 72hrs. Would be cool to see more of this!

Pretty neat! I like the idea of a driving simulator set on different planets and moons! Having different gravitys and surface types! A really cool idea! A 3rd person view option would be nice, there were a few times my vehicle fell and I had trouble orienting myself. But otherwise, good job! If you go further with this, I bet adding a mode where the vehicle moves faster and letting the player just launch off of ramps/hills would be pretty fun too!

wow you did so much in such a short time! I literally have nightmares about slippery driving like this, haha. It was so stressful driving around the ice like this.
Cool vibes overall, great work!

Really cool concept, I love the idea of driving around the moon, it's pretty relaxed and comfy which is nice.

I think a little music here and there could spruce it up, and maybe a little more interaction, it would have been cool to have a laser to mine the diamonds maybe.

The vehicle controls great and while it accelerates a little slowly it felt really good to drive in general, really impressive vehicle physics.

Not a bad game, but it was very difficult to play. It seems to me that Unity and HTML5 are two incompatible things, since the imput lag was very large and it was difficult for me to cope even with basic tasks, such as driving up a small mountain or driving a car to a gas station. The sounds of braking are selected very truthfully.

This was really nice and really different from a lot of other games in the jam! I liked the various stations, which meant you had to decide where to go next and judge whether it would be too far away or not. I felt the game was a bit frustrating at times, mainly because the gems kept falling out when climbing mountains. I also did not really have a reason to travel far out from the starting area. This felt a bit risky to do, since I did not know where the charging stations were and if I would find anything there. Perhaps it would be an idea to add mystery markers on the maps? In that way people know something is there, but they dont necessarily know what it is. This might promote exploration more. Just an idea from the top of my head though, so please ignore it if you want :)

I liked the relaxed playstyle a lot. There is no time pressure, so you can think about what and where you want to go. This was nice. The controls also worked really nicely and the sound effects fitted very well. Of course, music would have been great, but I understand the time constraint :P Great job! I enjoyed it :D

@wuppos I totally agree on these points. I played my game a lot, It's fun after you get 1 or 2 rocket upgrades, some cargo bay upgrades, but this beyond 20+ min game time - it's too much time when people have other thousands of games to play and judge.

I have to learn to go wayyyy simpler in next LDs, just like your game, a nice example of simple and very fun.

Thank you for your nice review!

Cool setting (literally) and neat concept. Input was pretty laggy, and I couldn't find a way to restart when my energy ran out. Also cool sound effects.

Very big scope with many features and I had fun playing. Once you get the hang of the controls it's almost meditative traveling across the snow. Sound and graphics really help creating this lonely atmosphere, like you're lost in antartica. Nice touch that you can actually lose gems when they fall out of your vehicle.
Some strange things I encountered and I'm not sure if I did something wrong:
- Upgrades didn't work (I tried stopping inside the blue square, but the vehicle always had a tiny bit of movement)
- Nothing happens when you run out of energy, except you move veeery slow (no game over)
- I collected over 200$ and went inside the drop ship but nothing happened

@flogames thanks for playing! In this page I linked the gameplay video, where I do an upgrade... It takes a little time to start indeed. It helps if you press shift (brakes). When you run out of energy, yes, the engine and the rocket just stops works, sorry no time for game over screen

About the $200 end... wow, as far as I know you are the first ever to achieve it (including me till now). Honestly and sadly, haven't got time in competition to code it either as I was sure that no one would ever play long enough. What I can offer is apologies and congratulations on finish the mission, Rigel Mining Corporation would be proud :smile:

@ltyrosine Thanks for the reply, that makes perfect sense! I played for roughly 1 hour (including restarts) until I reached 200$, it was mostly the atmosphere that kept me going, which really speaks to the game. With less shaky controls (I know, the theme...) and a bit more motivation to travel further away from the base and explore more territory and even a story I think this would make a great game!

I thought this game had a lot of promise but it quickly became apparent that I would have to invest a lot of time to get to see the exciting stuff, which is tough when I'm trying to review the games. I don't want to not give it a fair shake because i can see that it's well tuned and is a good expression of the sort of game it's trying to be, but I don't think I can give it the deep dive it deserves. :(

I really enjoy the concept ! This is a a great idea but the vehicle is really hard to control and sometimes slopes are really steep !
Great game !

@bamberga Yeah it's really counterproductive to go for a too complex/lengthy gameplay in a game jam, but I hardly can resist  Case is that is so rare that I find focus to finish games that I use LudumDare to implement ideas that I always wanted to do (inside theme) and it often de-rails for an overscoped thing. Thank you for your sincerity, I will try something way simpler next time.

This is a great project, with lots of things to improve in your post-jam time to make it very satisfying!
Loved it, even if playing it is slow for now :) Gems are annoying that they get kicked from the cart, but they are annoying in a good way.

Wow that vehicle is truly unstable! The cockpit was really well done and transported you nicely into this world.
I would've loved to have at least a little more power or control (even through a more powerful rocket) from the beginning as it felt very punishing just being thrown around by every tiny bump.
I know that it's supposed to be a major part of the game but I think it could've done with a little more chaos by overshooting rather than not being able to climb up an incline and just falling back down.
Still a really unique entry with an impressive atmosphere and graphics :)

@sibi Thank you for your review. I agree on your opinions, I ended with a game that needs too much investment in play time to reward the player (this vehicle fully upgraded is a beast, mainly the level 3 rocket).

A lesson for next LDs.

Oh boy. I should have read the comments before I played this. I wanted to see how it ends. Well... It doesn't. Well done anyway! Graphics are great, controls better than you made us think and sounds are ok. Sounds and the "level design" are probably the worst offenders. Leaving out music worked for me, it felt natural. That does leave the soundscape fairly barren, so more sound effects are needed. The pickup sound was nice, but it was painfully obvious there was only one that you pitch shifted. It got very jarring :(
The way the buildings were scattered was a negative for me. I spent most of the time driving from refinery to the power station and back, hoping to find enough gems between those places. The map was too chaotic to go too far and since the buildings were far apart, I didn't want to go explore the map. If there was a central hub with few gems and all the buildings, I'd be forced to go explore.
All in all, well made, I played this for way too long! :D

Really well made game. Cockpit design is effective, graphics and sounds are great. It is good that you haven't forced any music. The game can be quite immersive. With some more work and improvements it might be truly awesome and satisfying game. Keep up the good work! :D
