Sky High Islands - Ludum Dare 49

Short Description

Welcome to Sky High Islands, the most luxurious escape room among the clouds. We offer adventurers, such as yourself a wide variety of challenges to enjoy. Our offer contains dangerous cliffs, collapsing bridges and lots of explosions. Just make sure you have a firm tread - there is no safety net!

Default Controls

You can hold down a button and walk automatically, but you will be rewarded with a faster movement speed if you manually press the buttons fast enough ;)

Keyboard:

Movement: WASD or Arrow Keys Interact with items: Space / Left Control Place from your hand: Space / Left Control Pause: Esc

Controller:

Movement: JoyStick Interact with items: A Place from your hand: A Pause: Menu

Long Description

Collect items such as wood, stone and explosives to build yourself a path from island to island. If you reach the goal post you will be teleported to the next world, with yet another puzzle to complete. Once you pickup an item, you can place them back down as items or place them as a building block to step on. You can pickup only one item at a time and cannot walk over items. Wooden bridges start to decay once you walk onto them, lasting only a little while. Stone bridges start to decay as soon as you spawn on the island / place it, but last much longer than wooden bridges. Make sure to pickup your dynamite, as you need to clear some rocks along the way.

Pretty fun game, although I wish it was a little more challenging

Nice game, but the control really needs some time to get used to.

@slimmerburger if you make it to the end of the regular 8 maps, there are 2 bonus maps which we discarded, because they pressured the player too much for time. Hope they are more too your liking (and displeasement of your keyboard ;) )

Loved the concept, and I thought the art and sound was well polished. The controls made things a bit less pleasant, since I'm not used to using WASD or arrows keys for isometric movement.

Really cool! Loved the voxel-like style. Music was very good too. The only thing I've had some slight trouble with were the controls. They didn't feel very intuitive. I really liked how exponentially harder the levels got.

Pretty decent game, it just felt like it was a bit too long imo. I do really dig the graphics. Great job on submitting a game! Congrats!!

Nice game, but may it should be more dangerous to play with checkpoint restarts after die ?.

Fun game with nice art and very pleasant music! Took me a few tries to get used to the controls, though.

Echoing above comments, WASD for isometric controls are a bit odd. Concept is great though, and I liked the audio design for interactions as well as the icon based tooltips on the map.

Nice work!

The lets go button looked disabled, was waiting for something to pop up to enable it. Took a bit to get used to the turn then move controls.

Nice puzzler and a good use of the theme. I can see the controls being a bit cumbersome but I got used to them faster than I expected. Graphics are nice too and I enjoyed the chill music while I fell to my death.

I really like how there are multiple ways to complete a few of the stages - it's not too punishing if you accidentally forget an item! Nicely done :)

Nice little game but I had a hard time getting used to WASD at 45 degree offset.

One of my suggestions for the theme was actually "Sky high", what a coincidence! I'd have only changed the controls to go forward the way character is facing, found it a bit awkward to move even on later levels. Loved it otherwise!

Nice, clean puzzle game! Initially, the isometric was a little weird, but it did not take too long for me personally to get used to it. Though I felt like I subconsciously tilted my head to the right so I could make sense of the movement haha. I liked the gradual increase in difficulty as I completed the levels. Although there was a big bomb added toward the end, I feel like a few more added mechanics would have made the game a little more interesting. Overall, looks and plays very nicely, good job!

Very good game, i played trough all the levels. The last one was a really difficult to see whats going on there, while you can't wait for bridges standing up. If you create levels on difficulty between middle & last levels, this game has a potential to be fun to play like everyday. I would change the movement based on free movement and placing bridge pieces by clicking the mouse button. Music is good but in while it gets worst, so good you have the mute button at least. Also there could be on background something else, like animated water layer below the ground blocks and maybe shadow of clouds. Overall this feels like a real game and has the full potential to be an ideal arcade game.

Took some time to get used to the movement, but it was great when i got the hang of it! I like the later levels where you actually have to think about which blocks to grab in which order. Good submission!

Ditto what the others have said about the movement, it was a little strange given the camera angle, but I got used to it pretty quick and it never really caused a problem.

I thank you for keeping the puzzles pretty straight forward. I think you hit the perfect difficulty (at least for me) where it was interesting enough to think about the order I had to do things in, but it was always pretty obvious once I looked at all my surroundings. Nice job!

Nice game! Player have to think carefully where to place blocks! Took me awhile to get used to the controls and timing and behaviour of each block type. But all this adds up to the game's challenge. Congrats!

Interesting game. Controls looked weird at the beginning but I got used to it. Movement and interactions were a bit slow too. Nice entry!

Good job. Something about the turn based WASD controls and isometric camera didn't work for me at first, but eventually got used to it. Fun little game overall with a nice aesthetic.

Not a bad concept. Would've been nice to see some of the more difficult and interesting puzzles earlier on. So many of the earlier levels are pretty trivial, so much so that I didn't even realize the stone blocks also fell (just with a longer period of stability) until pretty far into the game.

Just a nice little game. A fluent control of the character might have been better.

Catchy music. Puzzles are quite straightforward but exploration is nice though. You could boost this game by working on control smoothness and maybe some animation.

This was fun! I liked that the you'd have to push twice in a direction in order to move. When first starting out, I would have gone in the wrong direction quite a few times, otherwise. The music choice was good too, very chill!
