Rocking Glacier by SephoWepho

[raw]
made by SephoWepho for Ludum Dare 49 (JAM)

This is my first game jam submission! It is a short platformer game across icebergs! I know it sounds pretty simple, which it is, but I think you'll enjoy it! I focused mainly on art for this submission! Even as a Jam entry, this was done completely solo! No help from outsiders except for some code I got off the internet!

I was going to make it a game you could play on itch.io but that didn't work! XD

Find the game HERE: https://gamejolt.com/games/Rocking-Glacier/652731

I'll try to post a behind the scenes video on my channel soon! :D

Good job! I might make the movement a little faster, and the blur around the sides was a bit distracting. I liked the art a lot, though!

Solid polish throughout. In the third level, a platform started falling before I actually stood on ti, making it very difficult to finish the level. Great job overall!

Thank you three! I did want to focus on art the most, since it's what I enjoy the most!

Nice tidy platformer, I especially enjoyed the feel of the bouncy floating platforms, it feels like there be more gameplay to be had from them. A little unforgiving for jumps that feel like they should've made it.

@mr-danh Thank you for the feedback! I would understand if some of the jumps are too hard, because with all the procrastinating I did on this game, I only had like 3-4 hours to work on levels!

Great work!
There is a gradual complication of the levels. It's good!

@lynnaira Thank you! I focused on the art a lot! I have a link for the palette in the description as I didn't make it up! I'm glad you enjoyed the music, but I should let you know I didn't make it, a robot did! XD
If you want to hear more AI generated music you should head over to Ecrett Music!

@cosmicpotato I appreciate it! I just need to let you know that the music was actually AI generated! I generated it using Ecrett Music, so if you wanna hear more high quality music you should check it out!

@karsinis I'm glad you enjoyed it! I haven't played any Nitrome games, but I'm happy it made you think of them! :D

@vulpez That's actually what I was going for! I wanted a simple game to create, but I also wanted something that felt great to play! So instead of focusing on complexity, I went for a simple platformer and worked on it from there! I also wanna tell you that the music used in the game was generated at Ecrett Music! That's right, it was made by a robot... Look how far the world has come...

Nice game! Hearing the AI music was pretty cool, although I was wondering if it was procedurally generated during the game for a hot second hahA. The polish was super nice on this game, more mechanics would be super cool too!

@randomerz Thanks! If you're wondering, I used Ecrett Music to generate the sound! I would've made the music myself, but I'm glad I didn't cause I almost ran out of time! I totally could've done more, but as I expected, I procrastinated a lot so I wanted to keep it simple!

Game graphics is awesome, but game itself needs polishing. Firstly, touching the side of falling iceberg makes it fall, I think it not supposed to do that. Secondly, level reloading is annoyingly slow. On the other side awesome music and physics of wobbling icebergs.

A cool game! I found pixel art very simple and beautiful. It helps to keep one part of the mind relaxed while the other part is tense with the platforms.
The level design is very good, but I don't like blind jumps. Especially when the platform below falls. The platforms that fall just touching the side made me nervous, but they are the spice of the game. The music is good, but the looping is very short and starts to irritate after a while.

Congratulations for the game

Nice platformer. think my only suggestions would be to increase the jump height a little bit and improve the hitbox of the platforms. but overall great game =D

@alina-baybulatova Thank you! I did want to make the graphics as good as possible! Fun fact: I actually don't know what the character is supposed to be, I just made a blob! I'm glad you liked it!!!

05. Oct 2021 · 15:44 UTC
@deltamain Yeah I wanted to finish the actual game mechanics in just an hour or two, and then focus on graphics! I'm sure I can do something about the falling platforms, but I just decided to add it as a feature since I'm lazy! The physics were actually super simple to implement! I just made the platforms rigibodies and then added a bouyancy effector to the water! I'm glad you liked the music, but you should know it was made by AI at Ecrett Music!

@euler-moises I'm glad you liked the pixel art, I tried to make it as high quality as I could allow! This is actually one of my first times trying level design and I'm glad it came naturally! The blind jumps are a little bit unfair, but what I intended is for you to take the falling platform like an elevator so you could see where to jump! I was initially intending them to only fall from the top, but then when it came to making them I just kept them as they were! It made it just that tad bit harder! Yeah now that I think of it, I should've generated a longer song... (PS: The music was generated at Ecrett Music!!!)

05. Oct 2021 · 15:54 UTC
@henriquecanella Hooray, I'm glad I did a good job! If I were to make this a full game, I would've made the character stats a lot different, but with how small the levels were I decided to make it pretty slow! (The reason the hitboxes are weird is because I made a bigger trigger collider on the player then I needed to!)

@hozoku Thank you very much! I'm just gonna brag a little bit here, but I think that making games comes very natural to me! Everything I've learned is off Youtube! I'm glad you enjoyed the game, and I'm sure I'll keep at it! ;)

Beautiful and intuitive game. Thanks you for sharing Ecrett Music! What a discovery!
As a suggestion, I would add parallax for the mountains and the clouds. And in one level (I don't know which one) I saw the end of the map on the left side, so I would tile the background a little more.
The speed of the character seems OK to me, but the wait after falling seems a bit too long.
Congratulations!

05. Oct 2021 · 18:05 UTC
@byyiro Thank you very much! And yes, I found it a nessecity to share that amazing tool! I was actually going to add paralax but it didn't work with my smooth camera script! I was worried that would happen with the tiling!!! I tiled it less on the left side because you wouldn't have to go over there much!

Just gorgeous, loved it a lot, don't need to reinvent the wheel if you're gonna build a nice well made wheel am i right? Very simple and very fun, could have a bit of quality of life improvement on jumps and how they feel but that's just me nitpicking, i also feel there were some interesting ideas to explore with the bobbing platforms and falling ones that you didn't but i also understand they could end up taking a long while to implement properly. Love the finished product, the art is especially beautiful and well made, everthing feels just right, but since you said you focused heavily on art i would have liked to see at least a tiny animation on the slime, it doesn't subtract from the experience the fact that it's just sliding around, but a simple animation could end up adding a lot. All in all a solid and fun entry that i loved having the pleasure to play, very well done, congrats!

@vitor-milioni Thank you for your in-depth feedback! I appreciate it my dude! I'm glad you enjoyed it! I understand that a lot of the jumps can feel a little strange to pull off, but with how simple I made it, I felt like that was one of the only ways to add difficulty... I really like the way the bobbing platforms work and I do think I could've done more with them too!!! I was going to animate a lot of stuff, but I actually ended up being busy on Sunday and just procrastinated all around... I'm happy I got to submit an entry people seem to like! I know next time I can improve on my faults I had this time! I'm also hoping next time I can try to make something more unique! :D

Very nice entry 😃 The controls felt good and the physics felt nice too.
The sound was solid and the art was great! I liked the particle effects and the ice when it went underwater 🙂
If i had one suggestion, the background would look even better if it was parallax scrolling!
Fun and challenging levels, great art, great entry 😁😁 good job!

07. Oct 2021 · 21:40 UTC
@curleysam I'm happy you enjoyed it! I tried my hardest to make the physics feel great by messing around with the gravity on the player! I'm glad you enjoyed the art, but the music was generated at Ecrett Music by AI! I've actually messed around with particles to the point that I managed to make those particles in like 5 minutes!!! I would've added paralax, but the script I tried to use messed with the smooth camera and then I was just too lazy to make my own script... Thank you for your feedback!!!
LDJam user 250905
07. Oct 2021 · 21:41 UTC
@cozygamepals Thanks, man! I did try to keep it simple as I didn't know what to expect with the time limit! I have been hearing that the respawn takes too long, I guess I didn't notice as I didn't die much on my own levels!

08. Oct 2021 · 18:33 UTC
@onesmallboy I'm glad you liked the art! I was going to add sound effects, but I ended up being busy during the jam and I couldn't make any... I did try my best to make the difficulty curve as good as possible, which includes the progression of complexity!

What a delightful little platformer! The level progression felt really good and the pixel art was fantastic! Do you use Aesprite? Having checkpoints in the longer levels might be good since having to start from the beginning after getting so far into the level was a little frustrating (but maybe that was the point lol). It was a ton of fun though, definitely one of my favorites :D
LDJam user 250905
09. Oct 2021 · 02:11 UTC
@victoriaogino Hooray, I made someone's favorites! This was actually my first time making a collection of levels, and yes I do use Aseprite! I could have actually added checkpoints if I wanted to, but with how short the game was I thought using checkpoints would make it a bit easy to finish! I'm happy you enjoyed the art in it! I tried my best to make it high quality! :)

This AI generated song fits the game very well, nice levels and pixel art. My R button is on :fire:
I hit level 5 or 6 and I think checkpoints will increase the replay probability. Nice job!

@rufson Thanks! I'm surprised the song fit as well as it did! I'm glad you enjoyed the pixel art, I tried my best! These levels were actually the first time I've made a group of levels, so I'm glad it turned out well!

I had fun playing it :)

18. Oct 2021 · 00:51 UTC
@pfs I'm happy you liked the art and yes, I know that bug! That was actually just me not wanting to code in the functionality of them only falling from the top... So it's not a bug persay, they just fall whenever you touch them! Thank you for playing it and leaving feedback! :D

I like the look of the ice and the effect of them bobbing! also the music works really good.
The last level took awhile, but I made it through!
As a lot of others said the cracked ice is a bit too sensitive.
LDJam user 250905
19. Oct 2021 · 04:49 UTC
@ratrat44 I'm glad you liked it and thank you for sticking through to the end! I really wish I had more people playtesting it because I do see that the cracked ice is kinda wonky now! I would've seen it sooner if I had more feedback beforehand, but I'm glad it doesn't take away from the experience much!

I really love the visuals, the pixel art's well done and the bobbing effect on the icebergs is super satisfying. Got caught out a little by the cracked ice dropping on any touch at all, but once I understood how it worked it didn't bother me much at all. There's also really good variety in the levels and I think every single one was well designed and had a clear progression in difficulty. Great job!
LDJam user 250905
21. Oct 2021 · 03:31 UTC
@benskca Thank you for the amazing feedback! I'm glad the visuals are good, as that's the thing I spent a lot of my time on! I'm also happy it didn't bother you too much about the cracked iceburgs falling, as I know it caught a lot of other people up! This was actually my first time creating a selection of levels so I'm glad I got the level progression down! Thanks for playing my game and thank you for enjoying it enough to leave me some feedback! ;)
