Rise of the Emoji by LaurenceOgden

made by LaurenceOgden for Ludum Dare 49 (COMPO)

The rise of Emoji in the early Twenty First Century shook the foundations of the written English language.

Now, in the year 2045 you are somehow our last hope, by answering trivia questions in a world where the English language has become dangerously... Unstable.

UGH.

Please understand me that when I hate your game, I actually really enjoyed it... but I HATE your game. Like, I actually preferred getting the quiz questions wrong, because then it at least TRANSLATED and I could see what the question was and what the answers were.

I ended up winning because I just randomly guessed. The last couple of questions, I have no IDEA what the question was or what any of the answers were.

People mashing buttons for text messages ANNOYS ME. (I am old) so I Hate your game. It was great.

And, that ending... the voice work on the menu... the overall humor. I laughed out loud several times. I did not LOL. I actually laughed. With my voice. In my office. Out loud.

Kudos @laurenceogden

Cheers! [-LB](https://ldjam.com/users/the-lame-brain/)

The last question was.. Oh. A bit cryptic  :exclamation: :exclamation: :exclamation:

I was expecting to see emojis in the game literally called "The rise of the emoji" :)

Overall, simple but fun little game!

The questions were pretty hard for me (maybe due to being non-native) but getting through them was so worth it for that ending :D Great voiceover all along

^Was actually expecting those here, but got a great voiceover instead. Some parts really were quite hard to understand, but I see that this was exactly the point.

This was a super fun game! As a fan of both trivia and word games, I really enjoyed the conceit behind this one--it at first reminded me of the Missing Vowels round from the quiz show Only Connect, but after failing a few times, I found it cool that you were able to disguise the actual questions and answers in multiple unique ways. The true ending was actually incredibly funny, and the low budget voiceovers throughout were hilarious (the bit about no mouse support REALLY got me).

I'm sure you're aware that the look itself is a bit on the underdeveloped side, but in terms of implementable improvements, I'd say that the trivia questions themselves were a bit imbalanced in difficulty. I've included a spoilered example below. The final question was also quite difficult in the way it was disguised; the only reason I was able to get it was that I'd had it before, and there's absolutely no way I would've been able to parse it otherwise.

!>For example, the question about Tyrion Lannister was MUCH tougher than the ones about the hottest planet or the tallest building, imo.

All in all, though, this was a fun, unique game!! More trivia and word games in LD plsssss

Yes, just want to add to any players that it's definitely worth sticking with it to see the ending, lol. I actually really like the puzzle aspect and was able to understand all the sentences (though some with difficulty!) It might be interesting if you could do questions that relied less on pop culture/trivia knowledge so that the focus is really on how well a player can read the language. Some audiovisual bells and whistles could be fun too. Overall, though, a nicely crafted puzzler and I enjoyed it!

Thanks for the feedback, I guess I should have play tested more, seems it's come out too hard.

@lunacyecho, - yeah I think the take away is that is you're doing a trivia game for general use it needs to be really basic, especially when the trivia isn't really the point.

@yoss-iii, great idea - could have used puzzle questions rather than trivia, got rid of that element.

Thanks everyone, glad you got some laughs at least!

Amazing game. Great voice-overs, and the ending scene looked incredibly realistic, 10/10 3d modelling skills :P

Let's see, the idea was great, however, in my opinion, it got a bit too difficult too soon. Being unable to read anything wasn't that fun, really, perhaps adding a few more letters could help. Art was minimal, but that's obviously understandable in a game like this, and some sound would be really appreciated (though I must admit I loved the voice acting). Overall, while it could use some more work, it's a pretty solid entry, so congratulations!
