The Stabilizer by LeoCeballos

[raw]
made by LeoCeballos for Ludum Dare 49 (JAM)

THINC Academy is back with another Ludum Dare entry! Lots of new and returning student, lots of learning, and lots of reheated pizza.

In "The Stabilizer", you rush through collapsing dimensions to activate four beacons and then approach the malfunctioning portal causing the multiverse to slowly tear itself apart. Time is running out though, so gather necessary resources to traverse the terrain - but keep in mind that the mountain or desert you are navigation towards may not be there when you arrive.thestabilizer.PNGgametest.PNG

Kinda fun to try and plan neat efficient routes through the map. Honestly it was a little frustrating when the tiles change just before you get to them haha.

However it is somewhat turnbased I had a hard time to plan my progress as there is no indication where exactly should I go. Also the camera movement is a bit choppy, which you will experience exactly 270 times ;) But I like the idea of making your way through the board thinking about the resources

Woohoo I saved the world. Nice take on the theme, and fun. Took me a little while to get the objective, but finished it in my second try.

Interesting concept. I like the cost to move mechanic. I feel that the goal of the game was a bit vague and i had to play a second time to work out what I needed to be doing. I do feel that the changing world fit the theme very well

Fun! Seemed impossible at first, the first two tries I couldn't get to the third beacon before running out of time. Third time I decided to rush it -- spent far less time looking for resources and more time walking towards the beacons. That worked much better, and I was finally able to beat it. Just have one suggestion: I had to repeatedly click on the arrow keys to move, which felt a little bit awkard. Overall, great job!

Good game. At first I did not know how to play, and I didn't notice the how to play button until later. However, the game was intuitive enough that I was able to figure it out. The strategizing over what tile/resource to prioritize is great. And I personally like the 3d pixel hybrid art style. I haven't beaten the game yet and I don't know if it's beatable. But every time I replayed the game, I got closer and closer to winning and tried new strategies. The art of the gameover screen is a bit rough, and the audio is anything stand out, but all that is understandable for a jam game. One thing that is trouble however, are the random tiles. Sometimes, I plan to go one way, but then a tile changes and my plans are thwarted. Though, this kinda adds to the theme of the jam, unstable. If you don't mind my asking, is the level randomly generated or premade. It feels a little random, but there are also distinct biomes, like the desert and ocean areas.
Overall, I enjoyed this game, and like seeing how I was able to improve each play though by strategizing.

The mechanic with collecting resources to cross platforms didn't really have an effect. I tried completing the game before reading the tutorial and was still left with 10 "time remaining" on second try 37, so you never really have to think strategically which should be the point. There could be a bit more of visual movement in the frame lie maybe some effect. The concept could be great if it was challenging!

I like the concept and the art. It could use some sounds, specially for when you want to move to some platform that does not allow you, and for when tiles change (I think it's every 5 rounds?). Also, it could use some background music. Howerever, I had fun with it, plotting mi course with some fallbacks and thinking a bit ahead of what resources do I have and what will I be able to traverse.

A neat little resource management game.

Would like to see more strategic gameplay, I guess. For now I just go to points on map and that's a bit boring, while cross entire level take a lot of time

You have a great spark of a concept here! Attempting something with this kind of complexity in one weekend is risky, but it's very playable even as-is. Fantastic work!

Really good resource management game, but I feel like maybe give the player a proper tutorial rather than a how to play button? I know time was short but it took me a while to realise what I was doing.
Good game though!

great concept but felt lacking in direction.
it was fun to greedily walk to resources only to be blocked later. XD
maybe there could be more strategies possible through some mechanics

I liked this, kind of reminded me of a deconstructed Civilization.

I liked the game, it was a bit difficult to understand it at the beginning!

This was delightful. I love the theme. Really captures the idea of being unstable. The mood is also quite good here, the graphic go a long way for that, as well as the ever decreasing number of steps I can take. I wonder about the decision to require a button press for each movement. I'm not sure if there's a better alternative for a game like this though, each movement has to be very deliberate. Overall I'd say it was fun and rather novel. I enjoyed it.

Really cool idea. At first, the presentation kind of looked difficult to understand and weird, and it wasn't great, but the gameplay underneath was really cool! I liked the pathing and tradeoffs between time and getting where you needed to go. Great job!
