Trick Or Retreat II by Lone_Wolf

[raw]
made by Lone_Wolf for Ludum Dare 49 (COMPO)

The sequel to my Ludum Dare 45 game!

Your ship is about to run out of fuel, fill it up again using candy 'borrowed' from passing trick or treaters, while avoiding the dumb birds that smash into you and threaten to knock you out of the sky

If the game doesn't run let me know and I'll switch it from GLES3 to GLES2

Controls

  • WASD / Arrow Keys - Movement
  • Hover over trick or treaters for 2-3 seconds to beam up their candy. If the beam blinks the timer starts over

Linux build ran perfectly for me. Nice job. Trick-or-Treaters are hopped up on sugar. So fast hard to 'borrow' their candy sometimes. I did them a favor 'borrowing' the candy. Clearly, they had to much. Someone had to cut them off.

I really like the spooky synthwave-esque music. More variety in costumes would be cool.

Short and sweet. The artwork is very good — I like especially the buildings in the background. You did a good job with sound as well. If you wanted to develop the game, you could add some variety to the trick-or-treaters and the flying critters. But this is just a suggestion. Overall, a solid entry.

@gamebuilder @greenxenith @gamebuilder thanks for playing!

More costumes were planned, didn't get the time though. As to more flying enemies: I think it'd be neat to bring in the attack helicopters from the first game.

I probably won't do all that for this game though. I think I'm going to combine the series into one big official game when I get the time. Using LD to scout out more directions I can take the Aliens + Halloween idea

A very fun game - really like the art style and the music. Challenging, without being frustrating. Overall, really enjoyed playing it :)

Nice game! It was really fun! It would work really well for a full release on mobile, I think you could make bank of of this. 8/10 nice game.

Liked the game, liked the difficulty escalation, really liked the city and buildings in the background. As a next step I would vary up the obstacles so they're not only birds and they would behave differently.

Gave you a high humor score for the way birds would spiral off after hitting your ship. Hope that was meant to be funny.

@thesedatedprince @devparty @laurenceogden Thanks for playing!

The bird spinning was intentional, like a few other weird things :P

If you manage to follow a bird after hitting it you should see it straighten out and continue as normal.

Interesting take on the theme! I like the mechanics and the implementation is flawless. Just wish the game itself was longer though/had more levels. Overall, nice job!

The only game on this jam, which I still could go to the end) Stop, it was a little difficulty ???

@montazhnikus I'm not sure what you mean. Is it too easy or too difficult? I added a difficulty slider but wasn't able to balance it enough before the compo time was up.

I think that the multitasking involved in this game is pretty neat. You have to both track the trick-or-treaters and avoid the birds, which requires sort of paying attention to your peripheral vision. It's a pretty straightforward combination but I think it's effective--either task on its own is pretty easy, but doing both at once makes things much more complicated.

The different difficulty levels definitely have fun names. I did eventually manage to beat the hardest difficulty.

One thing I liked is I'm pretty sure I saw two birds collide at one point and fall down. Those kinds of interactions between mechanics are always fun to see.

I had to go back and play Trick or Retreat again as I couldn't really remember it's story. I wonder if the aliens in both games are related or unrelated. If unrelated, the Trick or Retreat alien may find themselves in an unfamiliar UFO after this game, it seems. :smile:

If you win below a bird you will kidnap it on your way to space too :P

@jk5000 I added a difficulty slider, was the lowest difficulty still too hard? How would I improve it next time?

Cute game! Nice retro look. Locking on to the candy is kind of frustrating. Maybe a different control scheme would make it easier, for example, moving using the mouse, enabling other parts of the game to be more difficult.

I don't know if you read this now, but I have given your game another chance. I did not see the difficulty slider the first time I played the game, and I so it now and I will say it worked okay. I will also say that the difficulty levels was named a bit weirdly and I did not really knew what was hard and what was easy.
