Escaped Plague by Federico Giorgi

[raw]
made by Federico Giorgi for Ludum Dare 49 (JAM)

After a series of experiments, something went wrong. The government spread by mistake a plague which is taking over the world, transforming people into blood thirsted monsters.

You play as Belial, one of the first experiments. Half corrupted but still able to think and act under your own command.

After surviving the experiments you promised to yourself that you will save as many lives as possible, killing every creature that would enter any village you'll visit.

Since that day you travelled a lot, village after village, slaying monsters and raising those few Chronium coins that you need to live.

Belial, the survivor.

I enjoyed the 2d sprites in a 3d world, they could have used some refinement but overall cute style. Would love to see this concept built upon and refined

The art and styling is amazing! also really like the sound design!

on the negative end I felt like while it was cool the 2d style made it really hard to tell if I was going to/did hit an enemy.

also thin I found a small bug. you can restore sanity with out being near the Belial

@rosymaple can you say more about this bug?

@federico-giorgi Yeah for sure, I had thought that it was just you could do it from anywhere at any time by rapidly tapping f when your the little mechanical bird thing, but after going back in to recreate it its just if you rapidly tap f during Belial's transformation scene see https://imgur.com/a/P7fGiK9

The controls seemed strange for me, i naturally went for "shift" instead of "b" for dashing. I didn't play the tutorial. I'm just not good at video games in general. The concept seemed really cool!!

I attacked a few things, then my screen flashed red and i died? then i became the flying bug thing and hit F to restore sanity to something....but it didn't do anything. I didn't know what was going on. I prefer games i can just jump into playing without doing any kind of tutorial...thats just me. But props for making a tutorial too. Graphics were awesome and i liked the artwork alot. I wish there was a sound track during the gameplay though. The attack sounds and dialogue sounded good!

I hope my review seemed fair!

In conclusion: Theme, graphics and mood were the strongest in this game imho. in that order

Man the sprites were so clean in this game. Story was good but I think I saw a typo in the intro. I would say it needs sound FX on hit of enemies, and the was quite hard to see in the dark.

I love art in this game, it's so stylish! But unfortunately I couldn't stay for long and always game over on round 2... The hero is so unstable.

very nice artstyle with the blend of 3d and 2d, and very good mood, but the 2d sprites and the lack of feedback made really difficult to understand if I was hitting an enemy.

So ! The graphics are clearly the big point of the game, this mix of 2D and 3D is refreshing ! About the gameplay, the level design is a bit weird and clearly complex to plan and defend, the game idea is simple but that's not a flaw at all. I think I've experienced a bug : the tutorial worked well but when I start a real game, the enemies stayed outside the village :/

@kraghan It's a known issue, but we didn't find any cause. It only happens very rarely and I think that a restart of the game should fix it

Really cool style, I don't know what it is but the rain felt super moody! Voice acting was also really nice to have, I enjoyed it :D

As others have mentioned, the art style is really cool. The 2D characters in a 3D world looked nice, but it did make it hard to tell if attacks were hitting.

Main critiques I have are all about feedback to the player, making sure there's some UX that tells them why something is happening. I died quite a few times when no enemies were around, and I could vaguely tell there was something about me going insane, but it was always a surprise when just "poof" ...dead.
A super minor thing, the button navigation usually worked fine but confused me that the darkened button is the one I had selected, while the others were bright. In the main menu I could figure it out because one button stood out from the rest. But on the pause menu, there was 1 bright and 1 dark. I always thought it was the bright one I was clicking.

@mhorth thank you so much! I really put all myself into making the map for our game! It was fun and challenging at the same time and I loved it!

I will definitely do it again! And I hope to see other games from you too!

something about this game really reminds me of heretic very cool, I thought the movement was a little bit floaty making it hard to fight the monsters precisely

There is lack of feedback during combat, but the idea and the concept is really cool!
I like the visual effect of the dash and the transformation of the character. This concept is a good starting point for a game, keep dev!

I encountered the same bug as @kraghan and was very confused at first  I really dig your idea and the atmosphere is superb! Very nice graphics and great voice acting, I love the satisfying grunts and lines of Belial! The game itself was very difficult, I did not manage to get past round 1.

I felt like I was turning into a monster a little too often with no indication as to why.
The are is amazing, and the gameplay isn't too bad.

I like the opening with the nice art and voice acting!
I agree with others that 2D characters in 3D scene looks very nice and stylish, on the other hand it does make it hard if you hit an enemy or not. Sometime I just got defeated by a monster and I was all confused about the situation.
There is so much potential in this story setting!

Interesting idea! I like the perspective, the art on the 2D stuff was great and the 3D was solid, though I felt the art styles were still a little bit too far apart to gel well. I found it difficult to judge where monsters were coming from in the town, while being told that they had entered was helpful, some sort of indication of where they were specifically would have been appreciated (a mini map, an arrow, who knows). Also, like others said, it was hard to judge if I had hit an enemy or not. All that aside, still very cool and impressive given the amount of time!

Controller support is always appreciated. 👍

This is one of those incredibly rare Ludum Dare games where it already feels like a fully-released game! The innovative gameplay, beautiful framerates, amazing art (though really, what else could I expect?), and overall polish and detail in the game all feel like more than just a Ludum Dare game! Blurring the vision when you dash is a perfect and professional touch, I love it. Holding A to revive someone to prevent accidentally doing it and mashing A to regain sanity really bring some nice variety to the gameplay, too bad I'm using a backup PC controller and not one of my "ideal for button mashing" ones. Having the characters and enemies be billboards so you could have perfectly-drawn 2D characters in a 3D environment was a good idea, it really brings attention to the 2D graphics. Also, you seriously had the time to implement changing light and weather? Consider me impressed, all I can do with Unity is crash the editor, though I expect every Unity developer has dealt with an engine crash at one point or another. In my experience Unity is a pretty **unstable** game engine. 😉

Sadly, there is a bug report.... in Wave 2, close to Wave 3 I presume by the lack of enemies, I was guarding the last living villager and she committed suicide or something. I had been recently released from insanity and no enemies were on-screen, so no one was attacking any villagers, and the game just.... ended. Version 1.0.0 was used, though judging by the changelog I suspect the same thing would have happened in v1.0.1.

@peace-of-cake-games Thanks for the review! We really appreciate when someone plays our game so in depth!

For the bug: thanks for reporting I'll start investigating right now. By the way, we're working on a major update that will let you see when someone is being damaged alongside many other things!
