A dice and card-collecting rogue-like game

screen_05.png

How to play?

Stien is a game similar to Yahtzee or poker dice, but simplified. Each turn you roll three dice. You can then choose to hold any dice and re-roll the others. There are three possible combinations. The highest die determines the score (like Strike 3, or Trick 4). An equal amount of damage is dealt to the opponent, even three times the score for a Critical!

To end your turn, you can play a card that matches the combination and score. Status effects are triggered after the first roll.

Rage mode!

For the implementation of the theme "unstable" I added a rage mode that kicks in when you run low on health. You can rage to shake the table, re-rolling all the dice. At first it was a main mechanic, but it felt like just more randomness, so I restricted its use to near death situations. It's a more "hidden" implementation of the theme now, but it's better for the game.

Trivia

Stien (pronounced: steen) is Frisian for stone. A die is literally called a "gamble stone".

Changelog-ish

Then post jam updates include bug fixes, minor balancing of the cards and small UI changes. I also added an alternative roguelite and casual mode, for everyone who doesn't enjoy permadeath.

It took me a bit to understand how to play, but this concept seems very sound. Great polish on the art!

@lexian Thanks for the feedback. I just added better instructions to the LD page, as well as updated the ingame instructions. I hope it helps!

That was a fun game! It feels very polished - my main criticism is that the tie-in with the theme feels very tenuous and "tacked-on", as though the game was put together first and then the theme added afterwards.

Nice entry! How did you decide on 3 dice? I would've loved to play with 5(and choose 3) as well, to see how that goes.

@reronin Thanks. The idea was Yahtzee where you need to hit specific combinations to trigger special abilities (or cards), but 5 cards also means a hell more possible combo's. So I brought is down to 3. It makes it easier to learn, although still many seems to struggle with the learning curve.

dice, cards and fantasy setting. Hell yeah

I like the graphics and the sound and music was amazing and very catchy. A bit of a learning curve to this game, especially as I didn't know if I could use the card's ability. The pace of the game is a little slow, but that's mostly due to the dice rolling.

I think that entry really needs a checkpoint system as I would've like to retried to beat the enemy that I died against rather than start from the beginning.

@littlew00d Thanks for the feedback. Well, it's a rogue-like after all, but I understand your feelings about it and might patch a permadeath toggle in.

Very well polished dice/card battle RPG, although I'm not very good at them so I'm struggling to get past the second character. Still like the amount of strategy in it, but there is a lot of luck to it too.

Nice game! There should be a way to play around the RNG, something maybe like cards that can be used regardless of the dices, intresting idea and very nice execution!

Nice concept with also a good execution. Definitely feels like a finished product. Even these type of games are not my cup of tea, it greally got my attention. Music is also very nice, but there are some problems with the audio shuttering. If you add more polish into gameplay and overall feel, this game could really shine and start to show its potential. I'm looking forward to see where this project goes. Keep up the good work <3

The music is really good! The whole game has a nice chill vibe. I made it as far as the aardman. I could see myself playing a lot of this, I'd love to see the concept taken further into a full game.

Such a cool game. At first glance it reminds me a lot of dicey dungeons, but the mechanics are suprisingly different and work really well. That combined with with this super nice artstyle and some fun music... Really cool. I would love to see more content, more classes, enemies and cards. Very well done!

I'm such a sucker for Yahtzee lol.

I love this spin on the game! The addition of RNG makes it feel similar to a DnD fight system while still accounting for strategy.

The card option also adds a good sense of strategy as well, giving you the feeling of an "ace up your sleeve".

The art is nice and suits the theming, the music is good and audio leveling is well done. I like the little overworld map, it reminds me of Bust a Move 2.

Very well done! Excited to see if you take this concept further.

The art style is so clean and charming and I love the game idea!

I REALLY wanted to be able to finish the game, but there were a couple times I got really unlucky D:

Here's some minor suggestions I have in case you plan on working on this project more:
-if player dies, let them restart the level instead of restarting them to beginning of game
-change the visual slightly for when you are choosing what dice to keep. I kept messing up because sometimes I was thinking I was picking which dice to reroll. I think moving the dice a little bit or putting a label over the ones you click that says "keep" could help with that
-The rng can feel really punishing, so maybe numbers could be fudged a little bit to give you a slight luck advantage
-I didn't even think of this one, but someone else suggested a 5 dice mode and I think that would be AWESOME too!

Amazing entry to LD! Sound, style, gameplay it's all so impressive. I like how you combined dice rolls and cards. Though cards mechanic wasn't obvious at start.

The UI looks really polished, the help tooltip with the rules during gameplay is a nice touch. To compensate for the RNG I think it would be nice to be allowed 2 rerolls per turn, like other similar games usually do.

A very nice game! Excellent music choice, and excellent graphics and sound effects. I spent a while playing it.

The one niggle I have is that you can mouse over the cards to see what they do at *most* times, but not when you have to pick a card, i.e. when you need it most. Of course after a while you know :)

This was well done! I really loved everything about it -- the artwork, the music, the pacing. Even the rage mechanic hehe. Honestly, no critiques.

Thanks for the game! I had plenty of fun from the mechanic and I think this game has a potential! You made it very complete and polished!

I feel like there’s a lot of space for balancing here because I tried to play it a dozen of times, I managed to arrive to paladin 3 times and I never passed they. I think I made one mistake with the cards ordering by using a more powerful card with lower number and later not having the card to deal more points, but it wouldn’t have helped me. The problem I see is that there’s too much to luck here, I felt powerless and frustrated when I died.

Another thing that contributed to my frustration was that I could not power play the game. The game plays very fluid and some of the transitions are essential to place what’s the status of the game, but at times I felt that the transitions were too slow and the game was just having a delay to start the next round or something. That started to get me when I just wanted to throw the next dice and go faster. In the end there’s at least 50% of idle time in the game (opponent playing + phase transitions), and that doesn’t help retention.

Simple, challenging, and fun! Interesting concept, even if I didn't manage to pass over the cultist
I liked arts and mood too. Well done!
