Chain Reaction by Heliosphere Studio

[raw]
made by Heliosphere Studio for Ludum Dare 49 (JAM)

Overview

Ho no! You accidently mixed too much chemical X with water and now it's going to explode!
Quick! you can still fix it. Just throw the particles into each other.
Positive and negative will cancel each other out. But be careful, this mixture is highly unstable.
Mix together the wrong particles and you might ends up with some unexpected chain reaction!

How to play:

  • Click on an element and drag, then release to push an element.
  • The further away you drag the mouse, the stronger the push.
  • When a positive and a negative elements collide, they will both be removed.
  • Special elements will interact in special ways when collided, and then they are removed.
  • Too many elements on the board - It's game over!

Try to survive as long as you can!

It's fun to push the particles around, especially once you start to move them slower. In the beginning I was pulling the mouse back a lot and the force seems too fast to keep up with, where everything bounces and disappears before you know what's happening. It also took a while to see that the red particles were negative since the colour of the sign was very similar. Visually it's very engaging and the music is nice and chill.

I find the goal of the game conflicting.

On one hand, you have a score that goes up as you destroy things, on the other you have a timer that counts up which means I want to clear all the charged particles ASAP.

I think it would be better to remove the score and just keep the timer, that might focus the game into a better direction :)

Anyway great job on the submission.

Really cool game, but a little confusing at first, my first instinct was try to keep alive as many green particles as possible. The problem is probably the colors, if the + and - symbols were more visible and the color weren't the usual green=good, red=bad it would read a bit better. Once the confusion was over it is really fun to find the best shot, kind of like chemical billiards.

It was an interesting idea, but unfortunately, I don't think it turned out to be very fun. It kind of doesn't know what game it wants to be.

The important thing, though, is that you undoubtedly got to try out something new, and successfully submit something!

The game was a bit difficult (for me), and I felt a great sense of accomplishment when I finally won!Great sound and particle handling, cool game

Interesting concept. It was a little hard to control the balls because everything happens so fast even without the player interference. Good job though!

Very cash moni, a bit too chaotic at the start, but still pretty fun, also would be cool if you would make stuff spawn more gradually, like not all at once but a new thingy every now and then

Really fun idea, good aesthetics and feels very smooth. Needs some balancing, but that should not be too hard. Well done!

I enjoyed working out what the other particles did through trial and error, was nice to try to balance the numbers of red and green balls. Fun sciencey game :)

A neat little idea, it was a bit overwhelming at first, but once you figured out how the different particles work it was quite nice. A lot of the time it is just chaos but I think that is what you were going for. I did eventually manage to beat the game, so yeah :D Really nice entry!

The graphics were nice, although i feel that the menu didn't look too great, the music and sound effects were solid. The game feels a bit too easy, i actually tried to do the very opposite of what is intended, and tried to get as many particles on screen as possible, and it was actually harder than removing them. It is also sometimes a bit difficult to tell how hard you're gonna push a particle. That being said, the game is still fun, pushing stuff around and seeing it go crazy feels impactful. Its a neat game.
