Kalamari Damacy by rHornbek

HOW TO PLAY
Ahoy matey! I hope ye be hungry for some nautical nonsense, because we got a boat load of it for ye! ::laughs in pirate::
Steer yer ship using the arrow keys or WASD to collect cargo, avoid monsters, and keep yer load on deck.
The longer ye maintain yer mound of booty, the more points you will a'crew. ::puns in pirate:
Just be sure to avoid Triton's beasties, or they will knock the load from yer deck, and put holes in the belly of yer ship.
Too many holes and ye might just end up meet'n Davey Jones 'imself.

The name is great, as is the 2D art. I'm not sure it goes together that well with the 2D style of the boat, and the boat is quite small which makes it a bit tricky to see how your navigation will affect the pile of objects. But the concept seems solid.
Kinda disappointed the game wasn't a giant squid rolling around in the ocean collecting other sealife lol
Few things to think about:
- In order to sustain a consistent look I think that the ship and collectibles could also be hand drawn or with a cell shader. Just more corresponding to etched art used everywhere else.
- The elements the player collect could also be pirate or "high seas" themed like golden coins or bottles of rum. Currently the cubes or cylinders don't have clear associations to the theme.
- Also the skull shaped mouse cursor is beautiful, yet seems to be very important during play time and falsely indicates that the player has to somehow interact with it in the game.

I really, *really* like the load balancing mechanic. The simple rule adds a shocking amount of depth to an otherwise age-old side-scrolling arcade game. From making certain luggage more valuable than the rest, to making the "hug the left side of the screen" actually *not* the most optimal strategy, there's a lot of complex decisions I had to make while focusing on avoiding krakens and dragons. Very good call on keeping the ship only tilt left or right, while leaving vertical tilts unaffected. That made the mechanic just simple enough to manage, given the player needs to focus on dodging as well.
There was a point in the game where I felt the ship was moving too quickly. Combined with the relatively slow movement of the ship, there was a point in the game where I just gave up because I couldn't feasibly dodge everything. I'm aware the game was designed to be like an arcade, but it would have been nice if there were levels/stages so it felt like I was making progression instead of trying to play forever.
Still, there's a very strong potential behind this concept, and I certainly would like to see it expanded upon.
