Story

How you got here doesn't matter. What you know is that you are Synthwave City's last hope. A nuclear reactor has become unstable and is bending the rules of reality, physics has gone mad.

When arriving at the site, you find those up to no good cats messing stuff up. They see you and fear strikes upon them. "Damn it! It's Johnny!" they say.

You get to the core of the reactor, this is the last stand. You must defend it or else the world goes boom. The task is hard, but c'mon, you are Johnny! You eat up world ending scenarios for breakfast!

You reach for your gun. The time is now. Save the world Johnny!

It's a decent game. The random effects were a nice addition, though the overall gameplay, while solid, was pretty by-the-books. Still, I had fun with the game, especially due to the bullets' knockback. Juggling enemies around really made a difference.

It's hard to say no to synthwave. I liked the random effects, if I were to criticize anything it's that the controls feel a bit floaty. Other than that, good job!

Game is good, but somewhat tedious in my opinion. Great attempt would recommend different weapon drops and buffs to pickup to make it more chaotic. well done!

I don't understand how the game fits the theme am I missing some thing

@vishwah

The idea was that the constant rules changing + the gun with too much recoil + the increasing rate of enemies spawning/ rules changing is "supposed" to make the gameplay unstable in order to fit the theme.

However we might have been a little easy with the values, and i personnaly totally understand your point of view!

Hard for me but great graphics and mood. I kind of wish that the random abilities were more buffs instead of handicaps.

Awesome music, and I loved how you could fly by shooting down sometimes.
I liked how chaotic it got at times.

you can jump forever?! that is the kind of game i love! funky not punishing mechanics allow player to build/setup/establish their own playstyle! love it the visuals and all

Very fun game, I think with a little more polishing and more types of effects it could become a very nice game.

Pretty simple and fun game. The character is a little floaty imo, but with the constantly changing effects there's not too much time to think about stuff like that.

My biggest complaint is that I often didn't notice when new effects were in play before it was too late! Stuff like the russian roulette or the no jumping is pretty cheeky and I like them, but since I didn't know it was an active effect I immediately assume I'm hitting a bug, which is definitely not the case because the entire game is functional. I'd love if you added a timer or clock that lets me see when the effect is about to change, and if the moment when a new effect is active it is immediately obvious on the gui. More stuff that changes the properties of your gun would be cool too!! Maybe even having multiple effects be in play at the same time too?

There's a lot of space to expand this, but the basics are all here, so here's to you Johnny.

Ahh I love the synthwave theme, it hit a good spot! Only thing I would complain about is the Russian Roulette effect. Playing the first two levels, I thought I just randomly started dying. I though maybe the reactor is being destroyed, I didn't figure out the white bar is the reactor health, might be good to label it btw, but on the second level I didn't see any one damaging the reactor or leaving through the stage so I figured the game was bugged or something. Then on level 3 I noticed the russian roulette effect and sure enough, tried shooting and hurt myself. So, since that's such a dangerous effect, it might be good to highlight it a little, and maybe make it last shorter since taking that long can really mess you up. But otherwise, I loved it!

I had fun playing it! The constantly changing rules makes for a nice variation in gameplay, very clever! I would've liked the weapon to have a little bit more punch and screen shake! Nice game, good job!

I liked the mood even if in my opinion it doesn't really fit the them. But the idea is to make a game that you enjoy to play and it is a success :D

Thank you guys for your feedbacks. Even though the game could be improved (you had great ideas!) i'm very happy to see that you liked our attempt.

While the core gameplay seemed pretty basic at first, I ended up spending quite some time playing ! The random rule change is pretty fun, especially the wild ones (level change, can't jump, inverted controls, jump forever). The game may be a bit easy tho. A reload animation could prevent the player from spamming fire.

Overall, the ambiance is nice, polished and the random rules changes were super fun

Don't like the (ugly font on the) title screen but the game itself is kinda fun. The music is cool and I like the background.

Decent game. I like that rules changing all the time but it needed something extra to not get repetitive after a while. I understand there isn't much time in a Ludum Dare but I really wish it had animations and especially animation for the roll as it would help teach the player the roll's range. I loved the general aesthetics though!

952 ! Russian roulette got me...
Good jam game with a nice synthwave mood. Was fun to help johnny in his vendetta against yakuzas & rocket-powered-kittens.
The idea of having both positive and negative modificators is neat, but it might need a bit more pace.(change more often, more than one at a time,..)
About graphics, the background on stages is very cool, it just lacks of small animations/visual feedbacks on the foreground.
Props to the music fitting the game nicely !

I really liked the graphic style and music, but I had control problems. At some point, the character began to move in an absolutely incomprehensible direction.

@muros Yes you got the point !
We added some rule modification to make it more unstable !
Without spoiling all the rules, some of them affect your movements, jumps and more !

Feel free to test it more to find all the rules !

Nice work! I had a hard time figuring out what was going on until I managed to catch the descriptions appearing in the middle of the screen. Might be worth adding a few extra weapon types + enemy types, and adding effects to the text/etc to make the description more visible :D.

Thank you all for your feedback, it is all right on point and if we work on a postjam version those will be the first things we do ( weapon types, multiples rooms, change the menu..)

@muros Maybe it is because you had a invert control rule?
