Delivery impossible by Nikolay Zapolnov

[raw]
made by Nikolay Zapolnov for Ludum Dare 49 (JAM)

We used to think that delivering goods is an easy job: put them into a truck and drive to the destination. On the other hand, reality could be tough: time is limited, vehicle is unstable… Are you brave enough to deliver even in the harshest conditions?

We have prepared six completely different levels to put your driving skills to the test. We have dynamite, volcano, combat zone, drunk tourists and even giant mushrooms to keep you busy! Oh, did I mention that all vehicles have some kind of stability problems? Who cares! Grab the steering wheel and GET IT DELIVERED!

For the best feeling of the theme we recommend playing the Wobble Strike level, but it could be tough for newcomers. So practice on other levels first

Controls: WASD for movement, mouse to look around, Esc for pause and menu.

Note: While WebGL version is available, it is recommended to play Windows version if possible, for performance reasons.

UPDATE 1.2: Small bugfixes + WebGL version added * Fix: Watermelon Bonanza level was very dark * Fix: Camera position was wrong in Wobble Strike and Environment Unfriendly levels * Fix: Buttons for levels Watermelon Bonanza and Wacky Ride were swapped in the menu * Fix: Cargo and time indicators showed invalid values during 3-2-1-GO animation * Fix: Game stopped playing music after minimized * Fix: Bottle sounds were too loud * Fix: Some time limits for levels were invalid

UPDATE 1.1 (deadline + 5 hours): Added post-jam version with bugfixes and a couple of features that we believe are really important for the gameplay. I had to spend 8 hours on my daily job during Monday, so I think its fair we could post the post-jam version. Original build is still available if you are curious. * New feature: (added sound) people in the bus scream when they hit something * New feature: (added sound) projectile shooting and explosion, bomb shooting sound * New feature: watermelons and bottles break after they fall * New feature: added 1-2-3-GO counter before level starts * New feature: when less than 10 seconds remains, timer beeps and blinks * Improvement: optimize batching * Improvement: added house models to the wacky ride level * Improvement: hide cursor during gameplay * Fix: TNT pile had incorrect scale * Fix: soldier in the war level was considered a cargo * Fix: mission title in the menu was cut by screen border on some resolutions * Fix: collider for mushrooms was too big * Fix: blocked unintended shortcut paths in levels * Fix: motor sound was not stopped during pause or when level is complete * Fix: mission title was disappearing on second briefing screen * Fix: Watermelon Bonanza mission briefing was incorrectly saying 4 seconds instead of 3

This game is hard and challenging. But man does it do what the game titles say. Definitely close to "impossible". Music was really well done and nice. Environments are really cool too. I have a blast playing this game in short burst :)

Very funny and challenging game! Love the roadsigns and that each level is played in some different way. The physics worked very well and was very funny (played the Windows 1.2 version)

that "wacky ride" level explains a lot, but jokes aside each level us unique and interesting, vehicles are responsive, cargo is.. ah.. I don't recall actually delivering any cargo (it's that hard! but enjoyable)

Quite fun and impressive that you made 6 levels. Very hard though!

I can't seem to run it on itch.io, so 5/5 stars on the title :)

A very fun game, but pretty difficult to be honest ;)

Great looking game, although it could've really gone next-level with some post-processing. The game itself is pretty difficult, but it was fun nevertheless! I feel like less levels and more polished levels would've also really helped; the game's very long for a ludum dare entry

What a cool idea of delivering different types of unstable cargo. It was a fun and challenging game to play. That volcano on was really hard. The funeral level was funny. Great entry! I would love to know how you did the cargo physics where they would somewhat stay in the vehicle. I am making a forklift game (outside of LDJam) and objects I stack on the pallet don't stay on as good as yours. Great job!

This game was so fun. It was tricky to master, but it was such a joy to try and keep everything on the car (and failing at it)

@CodeChomper You can try a couple of things.

First, to make objects more stable you can try moving center of mass to the bottom part of the object - it especially helps for tall objects.

Also, increasing mass of objects also helps to some extent.

Another thing, which is more to help joints, is to increase number of solver iterations in Physics settings. This helped me to stabilize the bridge in the volcano level.

Great concept! Fun physics, nice art. Browser version was a bit choppy (but that's probably my PC's fault)

@gamezero Yeah, WebGL version is slower than Windows one. Its running in browser VM, so you need more powerful CPU than for standalone build. I am glad you was still able to enjoy the game :)

Amazing audio, the driving is smooth and well done! About the graphics, the various models look nice, the environment suffers a little bit for the lack of baked lighting, good work guys!

Fun game but maybe a little too hard for me, the volcano level destroyed me with a rock right at the end :'D Really like the variety of missions that make the game feel fresh, the photos add nice personality to each one!

@brooobin Thank you! I was able to reproduce it on macOS Big Sur with Safari (Chrome works though). This is something out of my control. I have sent the report to itch.io's support. Let's see what they say. Thanks for reporting this!

Absolutely perfect! This game hits all my marks, it is super funny, it works well, and looks and sounds stunning! Really well done. The only thing I would wish for, is that it could be a bit easier on the timer. The game is difficult enough as it is, but having to hurry because of a tight timer... Feels a bit unnecessary (Maybe make the time tick up and introduce a highscore ;) )

The personality on this one is off the charts. It's so obvious that y'all had a lot of fun making this!

I absolutely loooooooooove how each level feels entirely unique. You really found some creative ways to use vehicle physics (the trippy truck especially made me laugh).

If I could offer one tiny bit of criticism, it's that the majority of the levels are ridiculously looooooooooooong. In my opinion, for a game like this, none of the levels should last longer than 2 min. Taking an unlucky tumble 5 minutes into a 7 minute level feels suuuuuuuper bad, and really discourages me from trying again. :/

Thankfully though the game itself is ridiculously fun, so it's not like it completely ruined the experience for me! This is definitely one of my favorites so far!

Really impressed with the amount of game modes you have managed to get in. Gameplay is fun, but maybe a bit to difficult to start with, and levels maybe slightly long. Other than that great job.

Really impressive amount of content for Jam well done. It's clean with a 90's-00's game style :p
I encounter some invisible bumps that just threw in the air all of my loads sometimes... a bit disappointing.

Nice entry :)

Oh my god the time limit wrecked me. You should allow to turn in late but under penalty - it is really frustrating if you end up directly in front of the GOAL and run out of time.

I'm glad the customers order more than they need.

A very fun game. This is a crazy version of a trucker simulator. I don't understand how it was possible to do this in 3 days. Looks really good with nice, vibrant graphics and animations. The level with the coffin and the bends is just fine. As for the control of the car, it was a little embarrassing that it was very difficult to leave if you crashed. The humor in the game in the form of pre-stories and banners are just wonderful.

Hey there! This game was really amazing to play, one of the top game for me for LD49!

Really let us know if you continue it, I would love to showcase it again :D
Thanks for joining us live!

I finally had the time to come back and rate everything I played so far!

This is so good! Really got the physics down on the truck, tho it did feel like the cargo itself would sometimes randomly jolt off at a high speed from a standstill when slowly driving over a minor bump—but I think I had minor lag so might have been that 👀 Music is great and fits well, sound effects are simple but suitable. Art is fine but could be elevated if it looked more like in the intro screen to your video in-game too 🤩 Most of all it's just *fun* and I had a blast driving, really nice work!
