Warp Driver by Wilko

[raw]
made by Wilko for Ludum Dare 49 (JAM)

You play as the astronaut Crisp Rat. An intergalactic space travelling rodent with a very unstable space ship that will blow up if you overload the engine. Hop from galaxy to galaxy through a series of wormholes while avoiding asteroids, planets and black holes!

We have an online leaderboard! Where players are ranked by the number of charged boosts they took. When replaying the game make sure you uncheck "show guide" so you can quickly climb the ranks of the leaderboard. The leaderbaord can take a bit of time to update (up to a minute if the server is hibernating).

If you can, download the game cause it plays the best that way. If you are playing it in your browser please full screen it.

If you download it; extract it and run the executable if windows blocks you. Press "more info" and "run anyway".

EDIT - 08/10/2021: Just realised that we didn't enable graphics ratings :( All of the art and shaders were made by us over the weekend.

Very nice game, had fun playing it. Good idea, worthy realisation. Only the leaderboard was not loading, everything else is cool.

Awesome game!!
The mechanic felt good and I really enjoyed the visuals, esp the black hole effects and debris.
It was fun beating levels in ways I'm sure you didn't intend them to be beaten hahah

Didn't really feel any "unstable" in there besides the logic that prevents you from slowing things down for too long :P

Great stuff :D

@peco Thanks for the feedback. Yeah, I think we should have but more emphasis on the unstable engine (maybe tuned the timing a little bit).

A fun game of spaceship golf. I liked the warped effect of the black holes and was fun to play. I didn't manage to upload my score to the high score table (played on html) 'Error uploading highscore'. Still enjoyed it and the background music was decent too

Loved it. Especially that your ship gets flattened by the black holes!

The black whole effects are really read and i love just how many levels there are. The time slowing down mechanic felt really really crisp too.

The attention to detail on gravity effects, curved trajectories and the effect on black holes really got me. The game tutorial step by step is well built as well, and the music is chill enough to keep you engaged without being disturbed.
Solid entry, well done!

Perfect Game-Jam Entry. quick, easy to understand, not too hard, everything has feedback, very nice.

Tho, it was possible to skip a lot of levels (which I used at one or two, but ignored wherever I could) by moving up or down vertically out of the spawn boxes. So no planets can hit you. But that isn't even a bad thing because the first time it feels like a cool thing to find out and the second time, it will just be used when it takes too long to beat a level. ^^

Thanks for your entry, was a fun ride. ^^

Nice game. The puzzels are really nice. When the first beat dropped I had a Ratchet and clank feeling but that disappeared at the second beat. The puzzels where really good the last one was specifically hard but nice. The shader work on the black holes was also really well made. The only suggestion I have is that some kind of positive feedback when you one shot a level would be nice.

This is a fantastic game. The controls work well, it's fun, and I love how the black holes actually distort the view around them. Great work! I'd love to see more levels.

Space golf! Love it! Being able to see the previous launch location would help a lot with being able to make minor alterations to the path when honing in on that perfect hole in one!

Gameplay was fun, I appreciated the indicator towards the goal, but I did experience a bit of lag with your game, but maybe that was just the WebGl build

Pretty well fleshed out game! I like that black hole shader a lot. :)
There's not much to criticize for this submission. I felt like it achieved what it wanted to do well, and the music, graphics, sound effects, and gameplay worked well together. Perhaps my minor nitpick is that the game could be fully playable with the mouse, but I am required to use the keyboard to continue the tutorial or to restart the level. Being able have the option to click through that would be nice. Heck, that'd make it nearly ready for mobile! Well done, good game!

Probably the most fun I've ever had with a 2D golf game! Very polished and it plays incredibly smooth. The mechanics are very easy to pick up, but it's a very skillful game, especially with the gravitational mechanics. I loved the way you blended the space aesthetic with the golf mechanics; you really created something unique. And there's a leaderboard too! My only nitpick is that the tutorial text at the beginning took too long to auto advance (I wasn't sure if "skip" meant advancing or skipping the tutorial entirely), but that's a super minor thing. Overall, one of my favorites of the whole jam!

Interesting game. Liked pretty everything, except one small thing: black hole destroys you much much before you enter event horizon. Controlls are easy. Gravity mechanics is also really good.

**Beatiful!**
Levels are different, and never boring to play, and the difficulty has a good progression.
I LOVE the gravity that affects the ship and its feedback. This mechanic can open a door to a large number of different levels, so keep working on it, I would like to play a more polished and longer version of this and place my name on top of the leaderboard.

But I don't think the font you used on dialogues is easy to read.

Nicely polished game. Might be nice to be able to, somehow, see how the level is laid out (when the target is off the screen) for a more tactic approach. Unless the whole point is to fire off into the dark and deal with the consequences as you go.

Gives me lots to think about as a rework my game with a similar mechanic.

Leaderboard is something that I love to see (as a web developer). Even curios where do you keep a web server to manage the leaderboard. Gameplay is cool. Unfortunately I realized that speed of the spaceship depends on how far you pull the mouse too late. It was one of the last levels when I realized that.
Sound is good, very good
Graphics also on the level
Gameplay is nice. I wonder how you programmed the trajectory calculation... :)

@yaroslav-gozak Yeah it was something we wanted to add. We used firebase functions and firestore database because it was basically free. There are some interesting challenges associated with how you trust/authenticate the client which we did not get to address.

@jeff-kerman , just wanted to say again, I do really appreciate your job. It is always nice to see IT projects on the edge of spheres, for example, your game which has a connection to the web. Of course, many production games to it but in terms of LD Jam it is something above expectations.

Really liked the graphics and sound, both fit the game very well. The control was also very fluid and responsive. If there's one thing I'd add, it would probably be the ability to see the whole course at the beginning through a preview or minimap.
