The DEATH DOOM by Alan123

About this game

This game was inspired by a comic one of my kids had been drawing called "the death doom". This Jam has been about getting my kids more involved in game design from scratch and they've had a whole lot of fun bringing their ideas to life. For me it was a first time experimenting with Box2D. Ultimately though this was about us having fun working on something together.

Most of the assets for this game were either scanned or recorded by my kids over the weekend. (The remainder were made by myself and I edited some of their work to fit together better).

We built this starting with an emscripten/SDL2/Box2D "hello world" emscripten demo on Friday night and designed/implemented everything else after that as we went. Usual caveats about majorly hacky code, particuarly as the deadline was looming apply to this project.

Supported systems:

The controls don't work on mobiles, sorry although you can watch and shoot there's no way to move around.

I've only tested on Chrome on Windows, sorry. I expect it should work on most browsers though.

Full screen doesn't work too well sometimes.

Theme

There's lots of instability here. The monster is clearly emotionally unstable (otherwise why would it be a monster?) and t he rocks you have to stand on will hopefully feel unstable once it's done.

Due to the way motion is implemented currently in this game most of the characters are prone to falling over things. I would have worked towards changing that, but it seemed to fit the theme of unstable so I leaned into it instead.

Controls

W, A, D for hero motion. Mouse motion aims the bow and left click shoots it.

Hints

Some things aren't as obvious as they should be perhaps, so:

  1. You can move between frames just by walking across.
  2. Touch or shoot the death doom to get him to chase you ready for the battle.
  3. You can jump surprisingly high when you're colliding with any object.
  4. To win the death doom must knock the rocks about a bit - he can't die before that has happened.

Well this game really brings the game's idea into life. This must been a great experience to make. There are many types of games and implements, and ways to create. This is a creation with its limitations but also with limitless and a limit with the game idea concept as well. This is very short game to player to play, but actually it should not to be the most important shortage in here, because this is a game created with a child mind and to children world. But sometimes, you just can create and at the same time submit more with a less code, and this game title kinda does it that way. You should search the comfortable game engine for your kids (there are plenty of - with or without coding required) and start creating and share more experiences, and to learn from every submission the all kind of important things.

I like the really cute graphics and sound effects. I'm also a fun of the "THUD" that appears when you jump. Wish it was a bit longer though!

This is such a cute little game, I love the feel of a children's story in a game and the sound effects are just amazing. I think as a jam game this is just fantastic really, short, experimental and just enjoyable

Wow, one of the most unique art styles of the whole jam, really cute stuff! When I was a kid I used to love this game called "Orly Draw a Story" where you would be told a story, and every 30 seconds or so you'd be asked to draw one of the characters, so you'd have your own artwork in the story (a bit like a mad-lib but with drawings instead of words) and this reminded me a lot of the joy I got from that.

I hope your kids felt a similar joy, and this inspires them to keep on creating!
