Hack N' Shoot by Jake Summer

[raw]
made by Jake Summer for Ludum Dare 49 (JAM)

This game fits with the theme because you can hack in the game which makes it "Unstable."

Hack N' Shoot is a top down shooter where you can choose different hacks. The hacks are: speed, instant shooting, big bullet, slow enemy, aimbot, and invincibility. The hacks add more things to the game.

Well done! Loved the digital CRT-ish look of the game, really fit in well to the whole hacking theme. The hacks were also fun to play around with! The speed hack was a bit clunky, but other than that, the sandbox of mixing and matching hacks made for a fun time. Great job!

It's a nice little game, but it felt a little unfair at times. The things I needed to shoot would spawn right next to me and killed me instantly. As a tip, I'd recommend making them all spawn at the edge of a circle around the character, spawn e.g. 1 more each round and make them progressively move inwards faster. It would've also been nice for the hitboxes on the enemies to be a little bigger. Either way, I liked the game's aesthetic.

Found it a bit awkward to play - possibly because I was playing the browser version. Seemed that I kept dying when enemies randomly spawned directly on top of me.

Visuals were very nice. The idea is unique, but I don't think the "choose your own difficulty" route really works here, as you can instantly experience most of what the game has to offer by just selecting all hacks, I think some unlock system would work better.

Great idea, and I think it fits the theme. My only critique could be that the hacks make the game very easy and repetetive I guess, maybe make the player use at most two of them at a time? Other than this, really good game

Enemies sadly spawn way to close to the middle (as in, less than half a second to react all the way up to instant death), making it pretty impossible for me to progress. The hack button does nothing when I press it. Maybe a larger exclusion zone for spawns?

The visuals of the curved CRT screen and the sounds are very nice though.

Soo you just let the player enable cheats in game? :D Some questionable game design choice, but ok. Without hacks it is quite good, only sometimes enemies spawn to close, and i can't shoot them in time.

The game looks really nice and the audio effects are very well done. I am not really sure what I think about that hacking. It feels like too much. I think if it was more limited, it would be better. I played with the invincibility and aimbot for a while. I also played in the browser and it wasn't laggy at all.

Other than the enemies spawning directly on top of you with no warning it's a very fun game, a top down shooter veeeery well executed, the looks are amazing and the sound go with it really nicely, very fun to play with hacks, it doesn't stick too much to the theme, but it kinda does and that's enough for me, great entry, well done!

Fun concept for choosing your own challenge. Too many hacks isn't fun, but that's the point.
There's a lot of variety in the simple looking game. Each hack combination kind of has it's own playstyle.

Would be helpful to see where enemies are spawning (or having them not spawn that close to the player).
Most of my attempts ended with an enemy spawning inside me and I don't want to turn invincibility on

Good Job!

I like the way this game looks. It reminds me of Pony Island quite a lot. The idea of adding cheats was interesting. The aimbot cheat made the game playable without a mouse, which was nice. I think it would have been great if you fixed the issue where enemies spawn too close to the player.

The game itself being unbalanced is a very unique and interesting take on the theme. Maybe -a bit- at the cost of fun? But I think that can be forgiven. You should not be penalized for making bold gamedesign decisions.

The visuals and audio are pretty cool too. Great job all around.
