CRTs are Ancient, right? by CliffracerX
"CRTs are ancient, right?" is a fast-paced and somewhat funny take on the stealth and FPS genres, providing multiple ways to deal with the threats in each level.
Do you rampage through, killing all who oppose you, or stealth it up like a ninja? Brute-force the passwords, or look for clues? Collect all the things, or just make a beeline for the exit once you've gotten your target?
FYI: The game may or may not be broken on macs. If you get a grey screen with sound, please post a bug report on the Itch forum topic I've got set up, with computer specs and OS version. I want to make sure it's not specific mac versions and models, rather than Unity just exploding.
I might put the source-code up on Github if anyone's interested, though it also depends on if I'm going to be choosing to leave it completely free, or if I want to add the ability for people to pay to buy the game.
Something about asking for money, for this early of a game...it seems wrong. Not sure if it'll even ever surpass this pseudo-tech-demo status!
You can pick it up on Itch.io for free; no accounts required, no donations accepted. Yes, I disabled the ability to pay for this. I'd feel guilty if someone paid and then the game never surpassed being a tech demo.
FYI: For the time being, I'm going to keep it solely on Itch.io, so as to keep my metrics in one place and make maintaining/updating the game easier. I shan't be re-uploading it to any other sites, not even for Youtubers; if you want to link to the game, link to the game on Itch or the LD entry. You don't need anything other than that.
-=CURRENT FEATURES=-
* Two main levels (One main "infiltration" style level, and one "brawl" style level)
* Cheesy CRT-screened computer terminals to muck around on
* Beanish capsule security guards with revolvers and hats
* Your hat falls off if you die
* Your enemies lose their hats too
* Decent graphics
* Spazzy-but-funny music
* Main menu accessible through an ingame terminal
* Currently broken on Macs, possibly

If you do take this concept further, I would suggest keeping the focus more on the style of the "infiltration" level. The stealth and terminals mechanics is what makes the game interesting. The light giving away your position was a nice touch, and I would suggest adding a similar system with sound. The terminals were fun, but using them for the elevators were a tad repetitive, since you can't resend the same command as you would pressing the up arrow in command prompt.
Overall, it's a great concept that needs some more time in the oven.
I saw a couple bugs. Mainly the UI didn't display completely (it only had the visibility indicator) the first time I loaded level1 (after dying once it fixed itself). Also, one time I entered the correct password on the first computer and it didn't do anything. I was rather confused until I tried it again.
It could use some more polish with the elevators like someone said, and in the intro level and level1 you can fall outside the map and be stuck there. All in all though, cool effort for a game jam.
It feels slow on my machine. I don't know about Unity performance tuning, but maybe there are too many sadow casters and lights with shadows.
Entering and exiting the CRTs is a little buggy on windowed mode, and some visual indicator would make it easier than the music.
Would love to see a bigger version.
On Linux 32bit I have error saying that libXcursor.so.1 is missing :(
Some neat ideas in this but overall it could use some improvement. Good luck next time!
