Toy Tactics by JoeShanahan

[raw]
made by JoeShanahan for Ludum Dare 49 (JAM)

You're a toy soldier, and you have to defeat the enemy soldiers! Navigate round the unstable environment to battle against the other teams! The environment is built out of physics objects, so if you can hit it hard enough, you can make it fall over.

Features

  • Destructible environments!
  • Explosions!!
  • Jetpacks!!
  • Customisable team names!!!
  • Local multiplayer!!!
  • AI opponents!!!! (who love walking into things)
  • Bugs!!!!! (so many)
  • A settings menu with volume sliders!!!!! (what?!)
  • Toy soldiers with all the articulated joints modelled!!!! (yes I know toy soldiers don't normally move)

How to Play

Each player takes turns to choose a single solider to move. There is a limited distance you can move during your turn, after which you can use a weapon once to end your turn. The last team standing wins!

WASD / Arrows: Move

Mouse: Look around

Space: Jump / Jetpack

Left Click: Action

Right Click / E: Weapon Select

I played your game, but the controls didn't work at all. Then I got an error and I was glitched out. I love your toy soldier theme though!

@gamermomentum Hahah, yeah we submitted a broken build, still panic fixing before the submission hour ends!

Nice graphics and 3D models, the audio spam breaks the SFXs

You created a miniature army man / toy solider worms game. Do you know how cool that is :joy: :joy: Nice job!! :D

Never thought 3d worms could be this fun. My only struggle was getting the jetpack to behave properly, which seemed really sensitive and wouldn't go in the direction I'm pressing

Interesting concept, the jetpack was hard to control tho.

Had some weird stuff happen while playning (stuck in bird view during my turn or under the level, stuff like that), but that's a nice base you got there. Making an AI in a jam gam is very ambitious, and yours work pretty nicely. The graphics are also really sweet.

Amazing concept, really like it worms with a nice twist. Tho I feel like the AI is a bit too stupid, so u guys could work on that :D

This was a lot of fun! The imperfect AI for the enemies made for some hilarious moments  I liked how the gameplay and the environment are tied together.

Good job. Really nice job on the models. Messing around with the physics is pretty fun. On the second level the red guy will kill himself if you just stand underneath.

Love the concept! I've never played a 3D version of one of these turn based action games, also the toy soldier concept works great! Might be cool of the structural blocks looked more like toy wooden blocks? Only complaint is that the soundtrack is pretty short repetitive. Great Entry!

This was so much fun! The idea of a turn based "fps" was amazing and I had never really played anything like it. It really hit the spot in terms of the type of game I like. I probably played it for a solid 20-30 minutes? So great job. I wish there were more levels, and more levels that force you to use the environment to your advantage. I really, really, loved this game. So great job!

Very ambitious with lots of features like multiple stages, weapons, an AI... and made by just two people, very impressive! I had fun playing, it wasn't too hard since the CPU often tried shooting through barriers. Reminded me a lot of the Worms series, which I love. You could really expand the whole concept and make a great polished game! Well done!
Just one feature suggestion: when it's my turn to select a soldier I would like to be able to look around the stage more, since I want to carefully choose the optimal strategic position.

I have gone through all levels  Sometimes AI get stuck when the opponent is at high altitude but this creates funny situations. It looks very nice and gameplay is addictive. Hope you will expand this with more levels and Hard Mode AI. Grats!

The base mechanics work well. The AI could use some work, but it's still impressive considering the time limit of the game jam. The only criticism I'd have is that there isn't enough damage variety - if you want to defeat the enemy, then your only options are to knock them off the stage, or score two direct hits with either bombs or guns. But I guess that would be solved by just adding more weapons.

I'll have to echo a sentiment from earlier. I played so much Worms: Armageddon when I was younger, so I really like the idea of this kind of game. Honestly, given the time frame, I'm pretty impressed how many things you were able to fit into this build. I'm sure with some tuning of the mechanics, this could be a pretty killer game.

Wow what an ambitious project for a jam! Really impressed by the amount of content you were able to press into this.
Great tutorial levels to introduce all the elements. Took me a couple of tries to not fly to space with the jetpack. The bomb was definitely my favorite weapon with the added element of destroying the environment.
The positioning didn't all that important as the AI was quite stumped in a lot of situations anyway and shooting from behind cover didn't work as well as I was hoping. Would have really liked to play on a bigger level with more players.
I think this has all the elements to be extended into a full-blown game especially with these lovely little toy soldiers!

Really cool foundation, and an amazing achievement given the time constraint. The gameplay is somewhat unbalanced, but the tone and humor show a lot of spirit. Great entry!

This was really fun! I could see this being a really fun multiplayer game. The camera behavior when you initially select a soldier is a little wonky and seems to over correct when you first moved (This led to one of my soldiers jumping off the map >.<) but thats really my only complaint. Given the small size of the map, I found that the movement limits were very generous and I never felt like it was a constraint. Maybe reducing the amount a soldier can move would increase the strategy element buy making movement feel more precious (btw, NOT a complaint, just a suggestion ;-P) overall, good game!

Very cool game. The controls are a little hard to get a hold of, especially in the WebGL version. Nice entry.

That's a lot of content for one jam, nicely done. The weapons had a nice variety of functions - the bowling ball in particular was fun for yeeting enemies off platforms, and a bomb into batteries was a nice bit of chaos. (:

Jetpack was hard to control - better air control with WASD would have been good. And the enemies' AI (impressive, again, for such a short time) would occasionally have them unloading the gun into a wall.

Very neat game, love that kind of worms-like idea. The game plays well except for the jetpack controls, but that was my only issue. I didn't run into any bugs (I think) while playing through all levels. Nice entry !

Very cool game. I was just playing some Mario vs Rabbids on the Switch, and your game reminds me a bit of that. I thought the game controls and looks well, but the jetpack is a little crazy. Also, some objects seem to incorrectly block gun projectiles for me. Really enjoyed it, and would definitely play a full version.

This game is very similar to Worms I think! And it's a great idea to play soldiers. I can already imagine maps with lots and lots of soldiers. We could have a great strategic dimension!

About the only 'issue' I have with the game is that it only just barely touches on the theme for me. Having just 'some things in the world are able to be destroyed/fall over' seems to be just barely pushing past the passable line, BUT. Like, this game is to much of a gem to harp on that any more than that. Artistic style is great, the levels even in the jam version are really fun to just muck around with, and figuring out what the different weapons do is just great. Really elicits the feeling of being a little kid and just playing with your little army men, and I just adore it. Incredibly well done. (ohh, and the main theme is a jam as well, and doesn't really get old.)

I enjoyed the use of XCOM-like mechanics for this one. It's a very unique entry gameplay wise for the jam, and it works pretty well overall. The art style is appealing, and the music sets the scene well. The levels in the jam version are still enjoyable, even if the gameplay mechanics basically demand more fleshed out levels. I did have issues with controls during the jetpack, and I had one instance where I actually couldn't control the first person camera for some reason. Other than those minor issues, I really enjoyed this one. Great work!

I got a lot of fun while playing! But, lol, the only more potential of this game is the number of bugs in it.
Please finish this game, I think it's worth it.

Very cool! I loved the way the little soldiers fell apart when they died. It's also a nice mix of mechanics. I like the tactics that came from the game. I also got a bit of a worms vibe, keen to see where this goes :)
