THE GAME

Link here! https://cakestorm.itch.io/float

Travel through a floating island, all the while avoiding hostile insects and taking care not to destroy the whole thing in the process. And you get to do all this with a gun.

float1.gif

Play as a funny little leaf monster, and battle through a swarm of insects to finally reach the surface of this flying island. And dispatch as many bugs as possible, but be careful with where you choose to shoot!

And, of course, witness the beautiful wildlife as you go past, both internal and external, as well as the viscera and gibs you've created as well. Charming stuff.

MY THOUGHTS ON THE WHOLE THING

Making this game was stressful - the final WebGL build was definitely unstable! Despite that, I still enjoyed making the game and I learned a lot in the process, particularly with particles systems. I might have gone too far with the amount of particle colliders I added, but I can't deny that it was definitely fun to add. I also learned that WebGL is unreliable, and that sometimes it just randomly breaks, and I'm not salty about that at all. But it at least worked in the end, and I apologise that I had to use the development build! And I had so much fun designing and making the game that I can't really complain, and I'm excited to see what everyone else has done; Ludum Dare never disappoints! Thank you for taking the time to play my game!

A really nice game, it feels really nice to play, though sometimes i feel like i have no choice except firing at the stalactite and sometimes the jump feels a little finicky to get right, mainly when you have a platform over your head or the platform you are on is too short. Also some SFX were way louder than others. Overall a fun game that feels like a complete game with a nice graphic and music.

nice art and mechanics as well, kind of reminds me of Ori and the blind forest for some reason

A cool platformer. It would have been nice to have a count of remaining stalactite before a game over but the concept is fun! You have to balance clearing the way and having enough stalactite left to be able to progress. Good job!

I liked the graphics.
I think if the game were easier to play in the early part it would be more engaging.

Nice game, really great graphics and the mechanic to not destroy your island is interesting ! Platforming is sometimes a bit tricky but doable. Liked it !

@gibss Thanks! I agree that having some sort of actual number of stalactites left would be good, since the bar at the bottom wasn't too clear. But I'm still glad you liked it!

@lenan Thank you! The platforming could've been better, yeah - it's one of those thing I told myself I'd do when I had time, and then I ran out of time. But it's good you enjoyed the rest!

It is pretty funny and interesting that the player is a plant who shoot bugs with a gun. The graphics and the SFX are pretty good. It would be better if there is some special boost or bonus for bursting a bug, like additional lives or double jump ability? Overall, it is very good!

such a cool concept paired up with great graphics, wow! shooting the bugs and seeing all the particles fall around was really satisfying. the level design felt slightly disorienting at times for me, but other than that I had a great time!

The first time to see the game of plants versus animals, the control is actually still very strong plants, interesting! The art style and music are great, cool!

But I don't seem to feel the "unstable" theme though (although the game tells me that the island was destroyed after I broke a lot of spikes, I don't quite understand how it was triggered), more like a cheerful platform-killing game

The game was nice and functional, not many risks were taken with the idea. Loved the artwork and the webgl build! Thanks for making this game!

Great game! Everything fits perfectly together. Art, music, sound effects, feedback when shooting, almost feels like a full game that just needs a few more levels with different biomes. I also liked how the level design was made in a way where you could avoid shooting most of the stalactites if you jumped properly. Loved playing this. :seedling:

Absolutely amazing. I really love the attention to detail in this, from the art to the sound effects to the animation. Absolutely wonderful to play :)

The nostalgic art style, animation and audio worked really well together to create a cohesive experience. The gameplay was also really satisfying and I loved the twist that killing and destroying everything wasn't the answer, you had to try to avoid the danger and choose violence only if there was no other option. The checkpoints were also well-placed so that mistakes didn't feel punishing. Overall a really great entry, well done :)

Excellent aesthetic and art. It was fun to explore around. The hidden (?) tech made it even more enjoyable. I don't know why you made an encyclopedia for random fictional plants but good job.

Incredible job ! I love the graphics and the concept . The movement is soft and so is the combat. The only thing i would add is a menu that you can manage music volume . I think you should continue this project and make a game like this with differnt levels :D .

This game has a lot of personality! Love the art style and enemies and overall vibe. My only critique is that sometimes the game elements didn't stand out enough from the background, for example with the stalactites. Still, very solid entry. Good work!

@bountyhat Glad you liked it! I would've loved to add some bonuses to the game - powerups, a point system, something like that - but I ended up running out of time. It's a good idea though!

@clonze Yeah, I would've loved to experiment a bit more with the idea, could've gone some more interesting ways, but it's good to hear you liked it regardless!

@memoryfloater Different biomes are a really good idea actually, now I wish I could go back and add some more! Glad you liked it.

@jaybaus Good to hear the checkpoint placement was alright, I was unsure if it was working well or not! Thanks for the comment!

@730 Thank you! And it's very impressive you found all 3 secrets, I honestly didn't expect anyone to find all of them. If I was cruel I'd say there was a 4th you missed, but there wasn't - well done on finding them all!

@iasonasgts A sound menu would've been the next thing I added if I hadn't been panicking on Monday night to get it uploaded :P. Thanks for saying that you liked it though!

@jessefreeman Thanks! It's definitely something I'd consider; I do have ideas on things to add to make it more complete and interesting.

Pretty solid game. Everything looks very well polished. I'd change the colors of spikes and stalactite a bit to highlight then. It was frequent that I died just by don't see them. Except if that is the intention. Glad savepoints is commom, though. I see potential to develop a lot of levels in different worlds and skin system for the main character if you want to take the project further. Hope you do it.

A solid, polished entry! My one nitpick is with the controls- when you have both variable height jump, and automatic jumping when space is held down (as opposed to having to press each time you want to jump) it can make the platforming a little frustrating.

Wow!!!! This game was very difficult (for me, a bad platform gamer ) but I still really enjoyed playing it for the very pleasurable gameplay experience! The graphics and the shooting are VERY well done, I loved the animations and all the well-thought-out background and environment design :) The style of the game is very unique and satisfying to play! Excellent work!

I really enjoyed the game - the art was incredible and I especially liked all the enemy gibs. My favourite bit was the non-linear level design as it made it feel like a bit of an adventure to roam around the level. Nice work!

I love the idea that you can shoot obstacles but the make the level unstable! At some points of the map I felt that I had to shoot them to progress. That's fine in a general sense, but you'd have to be very careful that the player doesn't end up in a situation where it's the last one before the game is over.
The graphics are great. If you made the background a bit less bright, it might be easier to see what's background and what's not. Level design was mostly great. I felt that I was going around in circles, but I guess it was a big spiral? :D
Awesome!
