Unstable Island Farming by yumao

[raw]
made by yumao for Ludum Dare 49 (JAM)

main.png

Goal: Grow 40 carrots on the unstable island.

Controls: left/right/top/bottom to move, and space to do anything else. When you hit space, you should always follow the beat. Otherwise, there will be an earthquake and all your efforts are in vain.

Hints: When you grow certain amounts of carrots, more islands are unlocked. It's a good idea to grow on different islands so that you don't lose all the carrots when one island sinks.

This is a clever idea, and the inspiration from other similar games is clear.

I had a really hard time playing it though, because the instruction reel was so far away from the island that I couldn't look at both at the same time, and the music didn't feel impactful enough for me to know what to do without looking at the bar.

@squirmonkey That's true about the distance between the instruction reel and the island. A better idea would be displaying the reel on head of the heroine and make her fixed to the center of the screen. Thank you for the idea!

Great concept! A little tricky to figure out how to time my jump to get the scythe out, but I don't think it was punishing anyway, so there was no real problems there. Absolutely adorable and great fun to play! Well done!

Cute game! The graphics are very charming, the voiced SFX are adorable, and the music is pretty suitable for the game (although it would be better if the track was properly looped rather than stopping and restarting; the silent portion is a bit odd to hear).

Waiting for the right action to appear in the beat bar can get a bit tedious sometimes, although it does add a bit more of a challenge to the game. Also, I thought the movement was also tied to the beat so I initially started moving on the beat as well. Didn't realise that it wasn't related at all until playing for a while, haha!

Unfortunately I could never reach the 48 carrots goal because the game would always stop working properly before that point (i.e. can't move around or do any actions). Not sure what causes it to happen, though; the bug seems to occur at any random moment without warning.

I really liked this game. The graphics, sound effects, and music are just perfect. The gameplay loop is very good too, although at first I didn't realized that you need to use different actions depending on the grow level of the carrots. Either way, very well done!

For just 72h, this game is very impressive. The mechanics are consistant, the graphics are wonderful and the music + sfx combine too much with the game. It's realy fun. Congrats for the great work! I realy enjoy it.

Hey there, i like the pixel art and sound was well made as well. Gameplay wise i had a hard time to keep one eye on the bottom and then on the rest on the screen. My eyes were only at the bottom of the screen, maybe you can rearrange this part in vertical space and at the height of the map? Or above the player? I know that you should get in the rhythm and just remember when which action is active at the moment, but it can help to lower the barrier to get more easier started. Thank's for sharing!

I love the idea of applying the rhythm game to farming. The art style, music, and sound effects were all really nice and made for a relaxing mood. It would be great to see it expanded upon into a full fledged game. If you worked on it more the one improvement that I could see would be having the rhythm bar at the bottom be on its own section that doesn't overlap with the islands. When I moved up to an island the island below overlapped with the rhythm bar and made it harder to see. Otherwise, great job!

Very cool. Making a music game has always seemed difficult to me, here everything works fine and looks great but there is some bug stopping the collection. I had a great time, I like the combo: plow, plant, water :carrot:

I never thought I would see a mashup between a rhythm game and a farming sim game, but you guys have pulled it off! Nicely done!

Pretty graphics and calming music! But I feel like actions are too limited so I didn't felt a need to develop other islands. I ended up beating the game with only 2 islands

I really liked the idea, I think if the music developed as the game progressed it could make it harder. Nice vibe.

Super charming. Sounds design was great and the rhythm aspect was really well implemented. I feel like there could have been more time pressure or something though as it seemed like i could wait as long as i needed for the next action to come around. Maybe have the carrots go off if they are left too long? Having said that it lead to a super chill experiance that i really enjoyed. well done!

Really nice game, I liked the concept of a farming game on the beat. I think that it may have been better if, rather than 4 actions on the line, you would get to press *any* action on the beat. That way, you can move, and then maybe press "1", "2", "3", or "4" to do stuff. After that, maybe you could add some different mechanics to make it more interesting, like different plants and upgrades!

Good game! The art is beautiful, and the music is good too! Gameplay is really fun (although I wish the islands sunk a bit more frequently, only one island sunk for me and it was one I barely used). Overall it has a nice chill vibe and relaxing gameplay. Great job!

very cute, calming and fun. the few rhythm games i have play were all very stressful nice to see they don't have to be, a detail i think would add a nice amount of juice would be to have different stuff to plant then only carrots, they do not have to be different in mecanic just on the sprite. Did you do anything special to make sure the “button-clicks” matched the beats?

Very interesting way to mix rythmic game with harvest. It was so fun to play. I love the art n music too. In a moment music went out of sync, maybe its a browser thing.

@life-lich Thanks you for your suggestion and I'm really glad you like the game! We did plan to add more types of plants but ended up with carrot only due do to limited time. We check the click event timestamp with the beat-per-second of our sound to determine if it's on beat.

@pabulum Thank you! It's a good idea to make the carrot go off and you have to get rid of it afterwards. But we didn't have enough time to do this.

Cute game! I was very confused initially, not knowing what any of the actions do or why I would want to move. After I realized that I can move at any time, figured out the actions, and realized that I can choose to do-nothing when an action is highlighted, the game became much easier and I farmed all 40 carrots.

The sounds for performing actions to the beat are pretty satisfying. It probably would've been good if the difficulty went up a bit over time, for example if the pattern of actions changed, or if there was some kind of time pressure.
