Railrider by Blobby101

[raw]
made by Blobby101 for Ludum Dare 49 (JAM)

LD49 2.png

An on-rails shooter where the player is grinding on a rail! Shoot the enemy drones out of the sky to score points, but be careful not to lose your balance - it's a long way down.

Update: Now added Linux and macOS versions - I don't have access to either of these OSes to test on so ymmv.

Controls

A/D or Left/Right - Shift weight to balance Mouse - Aim Left Click - Fire

Try to stay on the rail while shooting enemies. Make sure you take them down quickly, before they start shooting back! Make it to the end of the rail to win, and try the different difficulty levels - you get more points on higher levels, but it's much harder to balance.

About

My idea for this was Tony Hawk's meets Time Crisis - an on-rails shooter where you had to balance at the same time. The Tony Hawk's grinding mechanic worked out pretty well, but the fact that (by definition) you have to be constantly moving meant I had to dial back on the rail shooter side a little. Sadly, features that didn't quite make it in include a nice AI system with swarming and building avoidance that I had to scrap to finish everything else in time - it's still quite a challenge though!

Good graphics, simple premise. I like where this game was headed. The default player capsule collider really takes away from the experience, but I'm sure once that's replaced this game would be much nicer all around. Great work!

I had a good time after failing a couple times initially!
You just need to add jumps and it'll true mania

Thanks guys!
@david-bohan Yeah, I didn't really have time to make a character model - I was aiming for the 48hr deadline originally!
@cottontshirtz Haha, yeah jumps would be good. If I expanded it into a full game I think I'd want to add multiple rails that you'd jump between as well.

Mechanically, this is an incredible entry! With some extra polish this could be a really fun standalone game, I hope you continue working on it! Very ambitious and you did a good job with the time constraints.

Pretty (un)stable game. Loved the music. Liked the flow. Better hit feedback would be nice. Very good game :)

What a fun game! So much challenge here. I included it in my Ludum Dare 49 compilation video series, if you’d like to take a look. :) https://youtu.be/JFLObqK2o9M

A fun challenge. 😃 It was initially hard to split my brain between aiming and balancing but once I got it felt neat! Nice audi and the menu was cool too!! I medium and hard we're very difficult haha
Good job!

Loved the falling off sound effect. Shame I heard it too often  got better once I realized you could predict the shift in balance. Good fun little jam game. Enjoyed my short time with it.

Nice little game, the feeling of unstability is really present.
I think that's a good thing that the mouse crosshair is big : it's easier to focus on the character balance and shoot at the ennemies at the same time...
For me, there's a little lack of polish and game-feel elements to really feel the speed of the character (like motion blur, small FOV changes, some wind particle near the camera etc.)

Such a nice game with simple mechanics and a dope *ss soundtrack, i love it!
Only thing i must point out are the graphics, which are pretty awkard;

Keep up the good work!

Fun game! It took me a bit to get used to it, but got pretty good at it. I wish the balance sensor was bigger or easier to see.
