Marvin's Day Job: Potion Seller by Devez

[raw]
made by Devez for Ludum Dare 49 (JAM)

ldoct2021_cover.png

Marvin eventually got tired of his 9-5 job in deep space, and decided to try his hand at building his own business. So he set up a workbench in his basement and started to experiment with potion making. How hard could it be? All the other NPCs are doing it.

How to play: Try making as many reactions as you can to fill the bar, but be careful, if the mix starts smoking and shaking too much, it might blow up! Every pair of colours results in another colour, as well as a side-effect. You have to try combining the colours to figure out which combinations don't have side-effects so your mix doesn't blow up.

Controls: - Grab potions with left mouse - Move forward/backward with W/S - Rotate with A/D

Hey ! I've tried your game. You're totally in the theme, congrats ! Your graphics are minimal but they work. Breaking bottles was my favorite part and it work really well ! I don't know if I'm just lucky or if you are really kind with players but I didn't manage to fail to see what happen.

Nice and quick game. Lots of potential replayability. I didn't get the meaning behind the colors or if there are any mechanic around it, but it makes a simple gameplay loop, easy to figure out and play with.

Could be interesting to add some kind of objective, like making a specific type of potion with a set of basic elements. Said elements could even be a random amount of randomly picked ones in a bigger stock or something.

A la Little Alchemy.

Thank you all for the kind words! It's true we struggled with the main goal of the game the most, we went through 3-4 iterations but we ran out of time so we released our most stable one.

Very cool concept - the controls felt good, and the mechanics mostly worked. Some of the dynamics felt a little inconsistent, like some bottles would break and others wouldn't, sometimes the bottles went through the table. I wish there was audio to go along, but the visuals felt very refined. Fun concept - I'd love to play more!

Could be really great with a clear cut goal and some more objectives or something. your game is great, but prioritizing level objective in your next jam might be helpful. It'd be really cool if you guys polished this up some later

Nice idea, but realization is not the best. Also consider making other way of making controls in game. Had fun playing it anyway, well done!

I did it! I made a potion, am I a wizard now? I thought these little puzzle game was right on theme and had some really great effects. Controls took a minute, but once I got them, it was pretty easy.

Once I understood how it worked it turned out to be quite a fun little game.

Hey pretty fun once I figured it out! One suggestion I would have would be to upgrade the UI a little if you plan to do a post-jam submission, because in its current state the UI is a little drab. Otherwise the game is fun cool submission!
